Once there lived a farmer called Henry. He had a brother, Mike, in town who was an excellent gardener. His skill and his beautiful trees were 1everywhere.
One day, Henry went to town to visit Mike. "Look, my brother, "said Mike, "Here is the best 2 tree from my garden. Take it home and 3 it so that you, and your children, and your children's children can enjoy it." Henry was 4with the apple tree and went back home. The next morning, he began to 5 where he should plant it.
If I plant it on the hill, " said he to himself, " the wind might catch it and 6down the fruit; If I plant it close to the road, people who pass by will pick some of them; But if I plant it. "7he planted the tree in the corner behind his house, where no one else could notice it. But the tree bore(结出)no fruit the first year, nor the second. Then Henry sent for his brother and said to him 8, "You have cheated me. This is the third year and it brings me 9 but leaves."
When Mike saw where the tree was planted, he laughed and said, "You have planted the tree in such a cold corner without 10 or warmth. How then could you expect flowers and fruit?"
What will the schools of the future look like? Smart schools(智慧校园)are being built all over the world. Their high technology helps students 1more effectively(高效地), as well as help 2 to work better.
At Staffordshire University in the UK, many students enjoy talking to Beacon and 3it questions. Beacon is an AI chatting robot that was developed by the university. It is like a personal assistant(助手)for students at 4.
Alexa, Amazon's voice-activated(声控的)smart assistant, can remember the teacher's classroom preferences, such as 5 bright the lights should be, and change them wisely.
People often 6 universities as "mini-cities". They often have their own roads, shops, and banks. Universities are seen as good 7 to use smart technology, because they have control over all of their buildings.
5G will also be a big help for students who take 8 classes. Many students live far away from schools. 9 5G, this will change. By using virtual reality systems (虚拟现实系统), students can learn at home and will be able to see places like the Great Wall without 10their classrooms.

I live on the twelfth floor of a building. One afternoon I was coming home from a friend's house. It was just after four o'clock. I got quickly into the lit and pressed Button(按钮) 12.
The lift started to go up, but very slowly. And then, half way up, it suddenly stopped between two floors. I couldn't understand it. I pressed all the buttons from l to 14. I called for help very loudly. But nobody answered.
Then suddenly the light went out, and I was alone in the dark. I started to cry and beat the walls of the lift. I cried and cried until I had no voice left. Then, I felt hopeless and pressed all the buttons with my open hands. And all at the same time, there was a bell far away. It rang and rang. It was the fire alarm(火灾警报). I thought the whole building was on fire. I said to God quietly, "Just get me out of here. I'll never be bad again. "
Just then, I realized the lift was moving very slowly. On the ground floor it stopped, and the doors opened. A man was standing there. "How long have you been in there? It is good that you pressed the alarm bell. But haven't you learned to read at your school?" He pointed at a small piece of paper on the wall beside the lift. It said, "Attention: This lift will be stopped for repairs between 4 pm and 5 pm on Thursday, March 13."
One restaurant in India is encouraging people to put their leftover(吃剩的)food in a fridge outside for the hungry people to take. If people are in need of a meal, they can take food from the fridge at any time.
The fridge is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week and stays unlocked. The owner of the restaurant Pauline asks people to write the date they leave the food, so the hungry people know how long it's been there. But most food doesn't stay in the fridge for long and the food needs to be added often. Pauline herself adds around 75 to 80 portions(一份) of food from the restaurant a day in the fridge.
The idea to put a fridge on the street came to Pauline late one night when she saw a lady looking for food in a trash can. She was especially sad because that night, her restaurant made lots of food that they could have easily given the woman, instead of her looking for it. She felt like she wasted food, and wasting no food is what Pauline is doing now.
By doing this, Pauline has helped thousands of people. And she will keep helping more if they need.
If you live in Shanghai, you might have taken a "lesson" in sorting(分类)garbage, as the city introduced new garbage-sorting rules on July 1, 2019.
As China's first city to carry out the strict rules, people in Shanghai should sort garbage into four kinds, namely recyclable(可回收利用的), harmful, dry and wet waste. As a result, the daily waste in Shanghai has been reduced(减少)by an average(平均)of 15, 500 tons, dropping 26 percent from the end of 2018, while the average daily weight of recyclables is 4, 500 tons, five times higher than the end of 2018.
"Proper waste sorting protects the environment and saves natural resources," said Deng Jianping, director of the project. "Led by the central government, Shanghai is making efforts to develop long-term methods to deal with garbage. "
However, there have also been some problems. Some people complained that it is difficult to deal with wet garbage, as they are asked to remove wet garbage from its bag when dumping(倾倒).
According to the sorting rules, the wet garbage must go in the wet waste bin and the bag must go in the dry waste bin. Then the wet garbage will decompose(分解)properly and become useful waste. Now some people in Shanghai are instead using paper bags that can biodegrade(生物降解)or plastic boxes that can be washed and reused.
This happened a year ago when I went to an old city on holiday.
It was in the afternoon. I could fee the heat of the sun while walking around the city for the first time. While walking down a street I decided to stop at a restaurant and eat my late lunch. I sat outside the restaurant and ordered my food. I played with my phone while waiting for my food. Just then a tall man came near me and asked if I had spare money. He didn't look like a beggar(乞丐)because he was wearing nice clothes, with a backpack on. I asked him what had happened. He told me that he lived in another city and he just came here for a holiday. When he wanted to buy some water at the bus station, he checked his backpack and found his wallet and phone were gone. "You must be hungry, Come and join me for lunch. It's my treat. "I said.
We talked for a while and after having our lunch I gave him some money and let him use my phone, so that he could talk to someone back home. He asked for my number.
"What for?" I asked.
"If I have a chance I will visit your city and pay back, sir," he said.
"Don't think like that. It's my pleasure to help you. You can pay it forward—when someone needs help, help him or her, "I replied.
He smiled and said goodbye. I smiled, too.
