Two weeks ago on Saturday my friend Justin and I were biking along Riverside Trail. Just at that time, Justin shouted, "There's 1 shining!"
We started looking around. I 2 something sparkling and cried, "Oh my gosh! It's a3 with jewels on it." After I picked it up, we saw it had jewels that reflected the sunlight. "Let's see if there is a name card in side, " I said. " We should try to find the 4." We found photos, some money, and a library card for Mary Johnson. Justin said, "We can find a 5 number on the Internet." However, Justin was 6 then, because we found eight Mary Johnsons and two M. Johnsons on the Internet! I said, "We shouldn't 7. Making phone calls might not work 8 . But we can look for other clues (线索)." We looked at the photos. One was old. Another was of a boy about two years old with "William, 2011" in handwriting on the back. A third photo showed a girl about seven, and "Anna Lee, 2011" was written on the 9, too.
Justin guessed, "Those 10 must be Mary Johnson's children." We went through the wallet again and found an appointment card for an eye examination. The doctor's office was in a mall in town, and the appointment was for two o'clock on Saturday afternoon—that 11 day! I said, "We have to leave for the mall at once. We have no time to 12."
We got to the mall at exactly three minutes before two and sat down in the waiting room. In a few minutes, a woman walked in and said, "I have a two o'clock appointment. My name is Mary Johnson." Justin and I introduced ourselves and showed 13 the wallet. Her eyes lit up. She said 14 , "What a relief! I have been mad!" She was delighted to have back her money and the photos of her children and great-grandparents. She 15us over and over.

Without the Nile River, the great civilization ( 文 明 ) of Ancient Egypt may never have appeared. Until about nine thousand years ago, all of Egypt was under the water. When the climate began to turn dry, tribes(部落) of people began to move from North Africa to land near the river. Later small villages appeared along the banks of the Nile River. Each village had a leader who ruled the village and would battle with other villages. Around 3300 BC, all these tribes came together to form the civilization of Ancient Egypt.
One main reason Ancient Egypt was built around the Nile River was its yearly flood(洪水). It made farming possible for people there. The flood was so important that leaders would even perform religious ceremonies. And these ceremonies were believed to cause the river to rise and flood. The flood made the land very good for growing crops such as wheat and barley. Usually farmers began to plant these crops in November right after the flood. Because of the Nile, they were usually able to grow a lot of crops. If the grain was not used, it would be stored for later use.
Historians believe that this is one of the main reasons that Ancient Egypt became a very powerful and wealthy nation.
The Nile River also served as an important means of transportation. Ancient Egypt did not have the wheel. So there were no wagons or carts at that time. However, Ancient Egyptians learned to build boats so that when the Nile flooded they could use the river as a main road throughout Egypt. It is said that without the Nile River, there would be no pyramids(金字塔). This is because historians think that the huge stones were carried on the river by boat. From this, people would easily understand why the pyramids sit close to the river on its west bank.
I am not interested in making New Year's resolutions. Making promises to myself just because the calendar changed doesn't make any sense to me.
But this year, there came a defining ( 决定性的) moment. It came when my adult children, who'd been home for two weeks, headed back to their homes.
There was a sadness I felt as I waved until their cars went out of sight, not knowing when I'd see them again.
But there was also a knowing at that moment that something in me needed to change. So I asked myself, "What is truly good in your life?"
What is good is my relationships with my children, but not only those relationships.
What also keeps my heart beating is creating a home, no matter who is there, and cooking balanced, plant-based meals, even if just for me. I find joy in nature and connecting with close friends and my family. I love doing photography and writing and teaching myself the piano.
Whatever was missing from my life, at the end of last year I knew about the parts that worked. And as winter ended and the last of the visiting children was ready to leave, I looked to the future.
I think of my friend, Lisa, who in May lost her husband of 30 years to cancer, and who found herself on New Year's Eve with no one to be with.
Her loneliness was profound at that turning-point moment, but her sadness was momentary(短暂的).
"I realized I had a choice," she told me. Instead of giving way to loneliness and despair, she chose to find something productive to do.
We humans can become bored with defeat.
We know something is just the other side. Like a new year.
I have two choices. I can brand myself as the long-suffering mother who never figured out how to live on after her children left. Or I can take to the piano in the center of the house each day and practice Ode to Joy(《欢乐颂》) with one hand until such time as I feel ready to play with two.
Ever wonder what would happen if you stopped doing exercise? A new study on identical twins published in Exercise Explores and the results are dramatic(显著的).
In this study, Finnish researchers looked at ten pairs of identical twin men. Each set of twins was in their mid-30s, and each had been brought up in the same household. Since they were twins, they shared the same DNA. The only difference was that though they had the same level of physical activity for most of their lives, one twin had stopped exercising in the past few years due to work or family pressure; on average the active twin exercised at least twice a week, while the less active twin exercised less than twice a week.
The research team put each twin through several medical tests to get a sense of their overall health.
The results showed . While the more active twins had lower body fat percentage(20.7versus 24) and better endurance(耐力)levels. The less active twins had about seven more pounds of body fat and worse endurance that showed signs of early metabolic disease. Not only were their bodies different, their brains were different as well. The athletic twin had more gray matter(the information processing part of their brain), particularly in areas that control balance and motor function.
The study was small, but the conclusion is clear: Stopping your daily fitness activities can trigger body and brain changes, and even lead to some serious diseases like diabetes, says Jordan Meltzl, M.D., sports medicine physician and author of The Exercise Cure.

"Where are the knives and forks?" Amy asked very (礼貌地).
"Oh, you won't need those." Tony (解释). "I will show you how to use chopsticks. Don't worry."
Tony's mother put (传统的) foods which were unfamiliar to Amy onto big plates. She asked the kids to carry the plates out to the table. Amy carried roast duck.
It was one of the few dishes she recognized.
Amy was a little nervous about eating with chopsticks. Tony gave her instructions on how to do it. Amy finally (设法) to hold the chopsticks. A boy named Reggie was famous in his hometown because he couldn't hear anything. He was born deaf. people liked him a lot, they treated him differently. Other (child) worried that they might hurt him while playing together. Adults acted like he was unable to understand them, as if he was a baby.
However, this year, people got to understand Reggie a little (well). On Reggie's birthday, everyone in town would wear earplugs (耳塞) so that they couldn't hear anything either.
This day came to (know) as the Day of Silence. People realized difficult life could be when they couldn't hear anything. They also learned that Reggie had some amazing skills.
On that day, no one treated Reggie a deaf person. People saw a whole new side of him. They (pay) more attention to the things he said. They were also surprised by his intelligence, creativity, and his ability to find a solution to nearly any problem or challengehe faced. They realized that he had always been like that, and that he (simple) needed to communicate with others in a different way. In the end, he was really just like any other little boy.
On the Day of Silence, people came to know Reggie's true nature. They learned that most of us are different from each other—sometimes in big ways—but we are still mostly same in our hearts and minds.
The day before Mother's Day this year, police received a call from a wife. She said that her husband, Melvin Amrine who suffers Alzheimer's disease, had gone missing from home.
Police found Melvin Amrine two blocks from their home, unable to tell officers where he lived. He was buying his wife Doris flowers for Mother's Day, as he had every year since she had given birth to their first child.
Melvin's condition worsened slowly since he had the disease three years ago. His wife has taken him carefully, watching helplessly as it steals her husband's memories and personality away from him.
Officers said they would take the old man straight home--but Melvin Amrine was having none of that. "" Officer Troy Dillard told CBS. "He wasn't going home until he got those flowers," Officer Brian Grigsby said, "That's what he wanted. He wanted flowers for his wife, because tomorrow was Mother's Day."
They secretly stopped in at a local supermarket and helped him select a bunch of beautiful cream-colored roses. "We had to get those flowers," Grigsby says, "We had to get them. I didn't have a choice."
Doris Amrine was relieved when she saw her husband walking up their front stairs in the company of the police officers.
"As he came up those steps, and I saw those roses and the smile on his face, I was deeply moved," Doris told CBS, "I just said, thank you, thank you, because I saw his heart."
It's special, because even though the mind doesn't remember everything, the heart remembers.
A. He would not change his mind. B. But her relief turned to joy when he gave her the flowers. C. So the officers decided to help Melvin achieve his goal. D. However, he knew where he was going. |
