Letting me move into my university dormitory wasn't an easy decision for my parents. However, they knew if I wanted a good education, I'd have to live away from home. I'd always dream of living alone the life of no rules and regulations and being independent. So I was delighted about this new stage in my life.
Unexpectedly, during the first few months of living alone, I would find myself crying every day. I would call my mum every day. Coming from a big family, I was used to noises surrounding me. Therefore, the scary silence at night was the worst. I couldn't even sleep without keeping the lights on.
As time went by, I started enjoying the freedom that came with living alone. I could do things in my own time: eat whenever I want, wake up whenever I want. The space of loneliness was also then filled up by friends who became like family, so I started missing my family less.
When it was time to say goodbye and go back home after my graduation I was bittersweet. I'd enjoyed my time alone, learning things which wouldn't have been possible if I had never moved away from home. But I'd also missed my family too much.
I'd learned a lot from this experience. Living alone made me value family time even more. I realized every second with them was important though I might not get the freedom while living alone.
I guess it's different for everybody, but for me, there is no warmth in a house unless it's filled with loving members and people you love.
Singles Day: Alibaba Says a Lot of People in China Bought Online
The planet's biggest shopping day has come and gone, and Alibaba again showed the world how many mountains of stuff (物品) it could persuade people to buy in the 24 hours.
Monday was Nov. 11, known in China as Singles Day. This year, nearly $38.3 billion worth of stuff was sold on Alibaba's platforms (平台) that day, beating last year's $30.8 billion and making Black Friday look, yet again, like a yard sale.
China has grown richer and more digitally connected. Alibaba has become a technology powerhouse. Along the way, the company has made a few famous friends. This year the singer Taylor Swift performed in its live-streamed evening gala (庆典) in Shanghai on Sunday. In previous years the model Miranda Kerr and the actors Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig also showed on the Singles Day stage.
Alibaba started taking the lead in China, simply enough, by connecting big Chinese manufacturers with big buyers across the world. Its business-to-business site, Alibaba.com allowed people to buy almost everything. Alibaba's advantage wasn't hard to see: size. Alibaba is just big, even by Chinese standards.
Alibaba now calls itself a data and technology company, one that provides digital tools to help the businesses on its platforms. That, in turn, leads consumers to look to those platforms for their every need, from shopping and services to entertainment and travel. Today, Alibaba is itself a gigantic company, and it wants to grow bigger still.
How do you notice a child genius (天才)? Gifted children tend to share three characteristics.
First, they develop skills at a very young age. Mozart began composing music when he was just five years old.
Second, they are self-starters. Srinivasa Ramanujan was building complex formula (公式) before he'd even been taught basic mathematics.
Third, gifted children can be crazy about their interests. For William James Sidis, a writer, had collected hundreds of street car models and had learned eight languages by the time he was eight. He was accepted at Harvard University at the age of 11.
They would all have been good members for Mensa, an international society for people with the highest IQs. Its youngest member is just two years old. But there can be disadvantages to being so clever. Members of American Mensa are three times more likely than the general public to suffer from allergies (过敏) or depression (抑郁), and they are almost six times more likely to struggle with anxiety.
These are just some of the physical and emotional problems that gifted children in particular may face.
Noticing those children is important, but many of them are being missed. To find out gifted children, you actually have to look for them in all places. The benefits can be huge when those "lost Einsteins" are found.
A study has been observing 5,000 gifted people since 1972. All of the children had test scores high enough to get into university when they were just 13. In adulthood, the first 1,650 people went on to publish 85 books, more than 7,500 articles. One-third of the group earned a doctor's degree that is 17 times the national average.
The founder of Google and Lady Gaga were discovered as gifted children. The child geniuses who could change tomorrow's world are already out there. But will we notice them?
How to Be Eco-friendly
If you'd love to be more eco-friendly but don't know where to begin, start with a few small changes.
Lowering Your Energy.
Turn off lights and unplug power strips (电源插板) that you're not using. Since some devices can still use energy even when they're turned off, turn off these power strips at night to completely cut off energy use. If you need to leave your computer, or TV on, try setting it to sleep mode instead of simply leaving it on.
Using public transportation.
Keeping cars off the road in rush hours can also improve the air quality. If you do need to drive somewhere, ask friends if they'd like to carpool (拼车) , so fewer cars are on the road.
Say no to unnecessary plastic straws, lids, and bags and stop using plastic wrap and plastic containers for food storage. Instead, you can use reusable water bottles made of sustainable material like glass, bamboo, and ceramic.
Considering growing a plant.
They add more oxygen to the air, which means a less polluted air. If you don't have a green thumb, choose some plants that are rather easy to look after. If possible, grow more than one plant.
A. Reduce your gas consumption and carbon emissions by walking, biking, or taking the bus.
B. Here are some suggestions for you to live an eco-friendly life.
C. Use less energy during the hot summer months and cold winter season.
D. This is an easy way to reduce energy use.
E. Using items more than once.
F. Cutting Back on Plastics and Waste.
G. “Lucky Bamboo” is especially good for that, since it demands nearly no attention.
