While thousands of college students headed for warm climate to enjoy sun and fun during their week off from classes, seven local students had other plans.

        The Northern Essex Community College(NECC) students and one of their teachers spent part of their spring break in New York City, helping repair an area {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (destroy) by the hurricane.

        “I wanted to see for myself what happened,” said Terry. “I couldn't imagine{#blank#}2{#/blank#}it is like to lose your home and everything that you know and the{#blank#}3{#/blank#} (power) effect the hurricane had on thosepeople. I wanted to do something, to understand their feeling of helplessness.”

        The group headed into Brooklyn's RedHook district, which was hit hard by the hurricane. There they met people fromother parts of the country, {#blank#}4{#/blank#}had also volunteered to help. Together, thosevolunteers and the NECC students{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (work) to clear rubbish out of at hree-story building. They put on protective suits and gloves{#blank#}6{#/blank#}they enteredthe building.

        Inside the building, the students saw nothing but broken walls and doors and pieces of the building   {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (lie) all over the place.

The students returned to school with{#blank#}8{#/blank#}sense of achievement, a feeling that{#blank#}9{#/blank#}helped people in need. I was remarkable how a community lost so much and was still able to recover, and this left the deepest impression{#blank#}10{#/blank#}thestudents.

    Dr. Ge Yun has helped many kids who were born with defects (缺陷), {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (include) me. She did my first two operations when I was a baby, which were the most important and {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (effect) ones.

    I don't remember the first two operations very well {#blank#}3{#/blank#} I do recall the third. Dr. Ge Yun was kind and eased me into the process. She tried everything she could {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (make)sure that I was okay. I {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (recent)saw a picture of me before my operation, and I knew what a big job she did.

    Dr. Ge Yun operates {#blank#}6{#/blank#} people with all types of birth defects. She also goes to other countries {#blank#}7{#/blank#} people cannot afford the treatment and helps them for free. Many people benefit from her new ways {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (invent)to fix birth defects of the head and face. She {#blank#}9{#/blank#}  (win)many awards so far.

    Though I was just one of the patients to her, to me she was {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (much)that just my doctor. She was and is my hero, and she returned the smile to me.

    The "selfie" is used to describe the self-taken photo, often from a smartphone. Someone takes about 10 selfies each time he does, and he only ends up {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (post) one or two of those. He picks the one that he feels make him look the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (good). In that picture, he gains confidence. For that moment, everything bad or terrible that has happened to him {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(remove), because that smile is what gives him the {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (determine) to love himself.

    I read {#blank#}5{#/blank#} poem recently and the young man said, "If I ask you {#blank#}6{#/blank#} you love, the answers will most likely roll off your tongue. You love to read. You love to write. You love your mom, you daughter, or your friends. How long do you think you can go on and on before you say 'I love {#blank#}7{#/blank#}( I )' "

    That statement hit me like a ton of bricks. I've struggled with confidence all my life. I still do. And in {#blank#}8{#/blank#} way am I saying that taking a selfie is a gateway {#blank#}9{#/blank#} confidence. {#blank#}10{#/blank#}, the selfie does deserve some credit for allowing individuals to express themselves.

    Starting this September, freshmen at Tsinghua University will have to take swimming courses. They won't receive their degrees until they pass the test{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(success). Exceptions will be allowed for students with certain physical or mental conditions, if{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(prove) by medical staff.

    Actually, viewing the ability{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(swim) as a must for students is not something new to this university. It was a{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(require) in the early 20^th century. Later it{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(drop) due to a rising number of students and a lack of facilities（设施）.

    As for {#blank#}6{#/blank#}new rule, opinions vary greatly. Some students welcome it, saying it's a necessary skill {#blank#}7{#/blank#}can save lives, while others argue that it's not reasonable to link degrees {#blank#}8{#/blank#}swimming ability.

    In response to the negative reviews, Liu Bo, head of the Division of Sports Science, gave the following explanation. {#blank#}9{#/blank#}a water sport, swimming does less harm to joints（关节）and muscles and is helpful in improving students' endurance.{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(consequence) it's beneficial to students in the long run.

    Inserting needles through the skin may sound scary, but acupuncncture and moxa-moxibustion, two key components of {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (tradition) Chinese medicine (TCM), are said to improve the patient's health and well-being.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (add) to UNESCO's representative list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010, acupuncture and moxibustion are {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (wide) practiced in China. Their format and practice have distinctive regional characteristics and they have a precious heritage based {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Chinese culture and science.

    The theory of Chinese medicine believes the human body is a small universe with {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (it) own circulatory system, in this system, there are acupoints (穴位) connecting the channels. By stimulating these acupoints, the self-regulating functions of the human body can {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (promote). Acupuncture refers to the practice of inserting needles into the body of a patient at a certain angle and using {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (technique) such as twisting and lifting the needles to excite acupoints {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (treat) diseases. Moxa-moxibustion normally refers to placing moxa (艾) directly on acupoints or holding moxa sticks at {#blank#}9{#/blank#} distance to warm the body.

    In 1995, the World Health Organization published {#blank#}10{#/blank#} can be treated by acupuncture and moxibustion. TCM has become more and more accepted by other countries in the world.

    It was getting dark when I got home. It was cold and I {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(wear) a coat. I walked up to the door and put my hand into my pocket {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(take) out my key {#blank#}3{#/blank#} I couldn't find it. I suddenly remembered that I {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(leave) it on my desk in the office. It really didn't make any difference. I knew my wife {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(be) at home and the children must have come back from school by now, so I {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(knock) at the door.

    There was no answer, so I knocked again. I continued knocking at the door for some time. I {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(get) angry. Then I remembered something the office boy had told me at noon. He said that my wife {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (phone) saying that she {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(go) shopping in the afternoon with the children.
