I have a friend named Monty Roberts who owns a horse ranch (牧场).He has let me use his ranch to raise money for youth at risk programs.

    The last time I was there he told me his story. When he was young, his family is too 1 to have a house to live in. When he was in high school, he was asked to write a paper about 2 he wanted to be and do when he grew up. That night he wrote a seven-page paper describing his goal of someday 3 a horse ranch. He wrote about his dream in great 4 and he even drew a picture to show a 4,000-square-foot house that would sit on a 200-acre dream ranch. The next day he handed it in to his teacher. Two days later he received his paper back. On the front page was a large red F with a note that read, "See me after class." Roberts went to see the teacher and asked, "Why did I receive an F?" His teacher said, "This is a(an) 5 dream for a young boy like you. Having a horse ranch requires a lot of money. There's no way you could ever do it." Then the teacher added, "If you will rewrite this paper with a more possible goal, I will reconsider your 6."

    The boy went home and thought about it for a 7 and hard time. He asked his father what he should do. His father said, "Look, son, you have to 8 your own mind on this." Finally, after sitting with it for a week, the boy turned in the same paper, making no 9 at all.  He told his teacher," You could keep the F and I will 10 keep my dream."

    Monty tells me this story because I am sitting in his 4,000-square-foot house in the middle of his 200-acre horse ranch. He said kids' dreams can be stolen. Don't let anyone steal your dreams. Follow your heart, no matter what.

    Jackson and Thomas are two good friends. They always 1 each other.

    One evening Jackson says to his wife, "Thomas got married (结婚) last month. He doesn't have 2 money. I'd like to give something to him in his 3.

    "Oh, that's a good 4," says his wife. "But don't tell him," says Jackson. "If he knows I put things there, he will 5 take them.

    So, later that night Jackson takes two bags of fruit and food to Thomas's kitchen.

    The next day, he 6 something strange (奇怪的).

    "I took two bags of fruit and food to Thomas's house last night, 7 I still have the same number of bags in my house. 8 did that happen?"

    Jackson 9 to take the things again that night. But the next morning, he sees the 10 number of bags again! "That's strange," he thinks. That night he 11 again.

    He carries a large bag of fruit and food in his hand. With the bright moonlight, he can see 12 person coming down the road. He is carrying something in his 13, too.

    "Thomas!" Jackson cries. "What are you doing?"

    "I'm worried about you, Jackson", says Thomas. "Your family is 14 than mine. I think you need more food and fruit. The two friends quickly know what happens to them.

    They both laugh happily. "It is15 to have a friend like you," they both say.

    There was once a boy. He liked watching TV so much that wherever (不论哪里) he went, he 1 arrived late. He couldn't wait to go back to the front of TV, so he never 2 his breakfast or homework.

    One day, the boy got a box, but he didn't know 3 sent it. In the box, there was a pair of glasses and a piece of paper, it said," With these you'll be 4 to see time."

    The boy didn't understand. He 5 the glasses, looked at his brother and saw many flowers on the top of his head. 6 it wasn't just his brother. When he looked at anyone through those glasses, the same thing happened. The only difference was that the older (越老) the person was, the fewer (越少) 7 were on their heads.

    The next morning, when he wore the glasses, he found the flowers on his head go 8 the TV.

    The TV had a big mouth and it ate all his flowers! He was  9 to see that.

    So the boy knew that it was not 10 to watch TV for a long time. He decided not to watch TV like before.

    Doctor Seuss was born in 1904. By the middle 1950s, he had become one of the best loved and most successful children's book writers in the world. His books are very popular with young readers. They enjoy the invented words and the pictures of unusual funny animals and plants. In 1954, life magazine published a report about school children who could not read. The report said many children's books were not interesting. Doctor Seuss strongly hoped to help children and decided to write books that were interesting and easy to read. He used words with the same ending sound, like fish and wish. He did not receive training in art. Yet, he drew the pictures for most of his books.

    In 1957, Dr. Seuss wrote The Cat in the Hat. He used less than 230 words to write the book and even a six-year-old should be able to read it. It was a fun story and easy to read. Children loved it. Their parents loved it, too. Today it is still one of the stories they like best. The success of The Cat in the Hat made him want to write more books for children. In 1960, he wrote a book using less than fifty words. The book is called Green Eggs and Ham. In 1984, Doctor Seuss won a Pulitzer Prize（普利策奖）. He was honored for the education and enjoyment his books provided American children and their parents. He died at the age of 87, but his influence remains.

    Millions of his books have been sold worldwide. People say his books helped change the way American children learned to read. Yet, his books are loved by people of all ages. Doctor Seuss once said, "I do not write for children. I write for people."

    When I was little, one of my favorite holiday traditions was making a wish list for Santa Claus. Every year, my father helped me 1 all that I wanted. Often, I put food on the list: chocolates, candies. …One year, I even asked for my favorite 2!

    As I grew older, I no longer wrote to Santa Claus, but I never 3 making a list of the things that I most liked or wanted.

    One year, I went to China to work in a 4. In China, most people don't celebrate Christmas. 5, they celebrate Chinese New Year. In my classes, I asked my students to make lists for Santa Claus. But they 6 me. "We get lucky money at Chinese New Year, "one girl told me." That's better than gift from Santa Claus!" I nodded. Maybe she was 7!

    On Christmas Eve, my friends and I went walking in the city. 8 Christmas isn't a holiday in China, many people were out in the streets and having fun. They 9 Santa hats, ate candies and said "Merry Christmas" to us in English. They knew we were 10.

    After a few hours, my friends and I were 11 and a bit cold. "One Christmas when I was small, I wished for soup from Santa Claus, "I told my friends. They laughed.

    We went into a restaurant and sat at a table. 12, my friends cried out. "Look, Beth, your 13 is coming true!"

    I turned around. "Santa Claus" stood 14 me. Well, it was the waiter, but he was dressed in a red and-white Santa Claus suit!

    "Merry Christmas. What can I get you？"15 asked.
