Australia is one of the largest countries in the world. It is 1 smaller than China. It is in the south of the earth. Australia is big, but its population is 2. The population of Australia is nearly as large as that of Shanghai.

    Enough laws have been 3 to fight against pollution. The cities in Australia have got little air or water pollution. The sky is blue and the water is 4. You can clearly see fish swimming in the rivers. Plants5very well.

    Last month we visited Perth, the biggest city 6 Western Australia, and went to a wild flowers' exhibition(展览 ). There we saw 7 large number of wild flowers we had never seen 8. We had a wonderful time. Perth is9 for its beautiful wild flowers. In spring, every year Perth has the wild flowers' exhibition.10visiting Perth, we 11 a day in the countryside. We sat down and had a rest near a path at the foot of a hill. It was quiet and we enjoyed ourselves. Suddenly we heard bells ringing at the top of the hill. What we saw made us 12all our things and run back to the car as quickly as we could. There were about three hundred sheep 13towards us down the path.

    Australia is well-known for its sheep and kangaroos. After a short drive from 14 town, you will find yourself in the 15of white sheep. Sheep, sheep, everywhere are sheep.

    Can you imagine that we could build a beautiful city with rubbish? Maybe you will think it is1. However, it can be true! Nothing is a waste if we have a creative mind. Let me show you something about2rubbish.

    Sometimes we can see tons of rubbish in the streets, on the roads, near the buildings... here and there. Many large cities became so ugly3it. Nobody likes rubbish, but in fact, some rubbish can be used again. All of us want to solve the problem, we must do something to4rubbish.     Do you often throw away things you don't need any more? Have you ever thought about how these things can actually be put to good use?     There are many ways for us to reduce waste. For 1, we can reuse paper and plastic bags. We can also recycle newspapers, glass, and cans to2 new things. Here are some 3 ways to reduce waste.

Write on 4 sides of paper.

    Many people write on only one side of their paper. Why not stop 5the other side? Some students only use half the pages of their notebooks before getting new ones. Try to use up all the paper. People often give cards on birthdays or festivals. How about trying to 6 e-cards instead?

Don't throw away your old batteries (电池).

    Maybe you do not know that old batteries make the earth dirty. This is 7  they have poisonous parts in them. So, don't throw away batteries. Keep them together. Try to use rechargeable (充电的) batteries for your games and CD players.

    Give off all your unwanted clothes.

    There are many poor families in China. You may ask your mother to 8 your unwanted(多余的) 9. Then you can pass them on to those poor children. You will feel 10that you are helping someone else. Also, you can understand if your friends or relatives (亲戚) want them before throwing them away.

    Benjamin Banneker was born a few months before another great American—George Washington. Benjamin was black, but he was not a slave (奴隶). He and his mother and his grandmother were free. Benjamin's grandmother came from England. In America she got a job and worked for many years to pay for her boat trip across the ocean. After working many years, she saved enough money to buy a farm. Benjamin lived with her for a while. She taught him to read, write and do arithmetic (算术).

    Benjamin's neighbours knew that he was clever. They were not surprised when he built a large wooden clock. He made each piece after studying a small pocket watch. The clock made him famous, for it was one of the first clocks built in America. People from other places began to send hard problems of all kinds to Benjamin to settle.

    Thomas Jefferson heard of Benjamin Banneker's ability to settle hard problems. He asked Banneker to help build the city that was to be the capital of the United States—Washington, D.C. Banneker worked hard on the plans for the city. He marked where the streets and buildings—the Capitol (美国国会大厦), the White House, and many other places should be built.

    Later, L' Enfant, the Frenchman who had designed the new city, had a quarrel, and went back to France in anger. He took all of the plans away. The workmen couldn't build without any plans to follow.

    For a while it seemed that the plans for the capital might have to be changed, but Benjamin Banneker remembered the plans he had helped draw. He drew each again as he had built each piece of his clock.
