We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people. Did Jerry really care when I broke up with Helen? When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy my luck? And Paul-why didn't pick up that he was friendly just because I had a car? When we look back, doubts like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, it's too late.

Why do we go wrong about our friends or our enemies? Sometimes what people say hides their real meaning. And if we don't really listen we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you. You're a lucky dog. That's being friendly. But lucky dog? There's a bit of envy in those words. Maybe he doesn't see it himself. But bringing in the dog bit puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that doesn't think you deserve your luck.

Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for another noise that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problem as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Wrapped up in this phrase is the thought that your problem isn't important. It's telling you to think of all the starving people in the world when you haven't got a date for Saturday night.

How can you tell the real meaning behind someone's words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says agree with the tone of voice? His posture(姿态)? The look in his eyes? Stop and think. The minute you spend thinking about the real meaning of what people to you may save another mistake.

A、we fail to listen carefully when they talk B、people tend to be annoyed when we check what they say C、people usually state one thing but means another D、we tend to doubt what our friends say
(3)、In the second paragraph, the underlined word it refers to              .
A、being friendly B、lucky dog C、a bit of envy D、your luck
(4)、When we listen to a person talking, the most important thing for us to do is          .
A、notice the way the person is talking B、take a good look at the person talking C、mind his tone, his posture and the look in his eyes D、examine the real meaning of what he says based on his manner, his tone and his posture

I was driving home from the gym with my children. It was approaching bed time.

“My legs hurt, I can't walk to the car.” said my son, William. Then be sat on the ground regardless of whatever we said.

“Maybe you just need a banana? They're good for tired bones.” his sister, Meredith, persuaded him in a wise way.

This was the first time I had heard of the banana's miracle(神奇的) cure for achy bones. It distracted(使分心) William and we were able to make it to the car. His wish for bone relief brought him energy and he persisted(坚持) the entire ride home. Upon arrival, he struggled out of the car and slowly went up 3 steps into the house. While he took his ”medicine”, we arrived on a suitable diagnosis (诊断) for his “illness” —a serious case of Banana Bone. He was probably just over—tired. He had a long day and played hard in the Adventure Room at the gym. Thankfully we kept some bananas in the fridge, and hugs and kisses were given as a booster (辅助药剂) , which gave him the courage to walk upstairs to sleep.

Banana Bone sounds like something I've had before. The aching hasn't been in my bones so much as in my head and my heart. I think it's a condition related to stress, lack of rest and stretching of one's abilities. Perhaps you're experienced it too. It is about long days facing challenges or pressing against the edges of your own ability without any hope.

That's when you realize Banana Bone doesn't have to be a physical illness. It can be mental. It can drive emotion. It means you can choose it or you can choose against it. It's not real. It' s your reaction to what's real. I know, it' s still not easy. But it' s part of “growing up”. We must have the courage to overcome it and I believe we can make it﹗

My advice to you? Eat a banana and go to bed. You'll feel a lot better and be your fresh self in the morning.

A good hiking trip should be planned out ahead of time. Whether it is a hike on a mountain trail or through the woods, an enjoyable hiking trip can easily turn into a dangerous situation if safety is not considered well. North Mountain State Park recommends hikers consider the following tips before hitting any trails:

Make a copy of your itinerary to give to a family member or a friend. Make sure that someone close to you knows where you are and how long you will be gone.

Wear a good pair of hiking boots or strong athletic shoes. The right shoes will keep you safe, warm, and comfortable.

Prepare for various types of weather conditions. Check the forecast before you leave; take along sunglasses and extra clothing (e.g., a hat and /or a jacket for a day hike).

Pack plenty of food and water. Consider how long your hike will be and pack accordingly.

Pack basic and necessary supplies. Bring a first-aid kit, a flashlight, a pocket knife, a map of the area (if available), and a compass. You may need other supplies, such as matches, depending on how long your hike will be.

Determine what time the sun sets. This information is available in most local newspapers. Most people become lost after nightfall, so it is important to know this information.

Stay on properly marked trails. Stay on established trails to decrease the chances of becoming lost. Staying on established trails also lowers the risk of doing harm to rare and endangered plants.

Carry a whistle(哨子). Using a loud whistle is a good way to call attention to your location if you get lost.

Keep an eye out for wildlife. Do not approach animals in the wild, even if they seem friendly.

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission (WSPRC) manages a diverse system of more than 120 parks. The 90-year-old park system, which receives nearly 48 million visits a year, ranks 4th nationally in day-use attendance, 10th in overnight attendance, and the WSPRC has a smaller budget than most states.

The phone ID flashed “Emergency Vet”. “Oh no” I whispered. I could not lose Merlin now.

Ron and I had tried to have children for a long time with depressing results. I threw myself into my work. Any maternal feelings I had were spent on Merlin.

I couldn't wait to get home from work each night. I wanted to pick up that warm bundle of loving fur and nestle him. I wanted to sing “Rock-a-bye Merlin” as I did every night as he would put his paws around my neck.

Merlin was my comfort especially at times when I wondered if God was listening. But last night something had changed. Not only did I sing “Rock-a-Bye Merlin” but I asked “What will I do after you're gone?”

Although Merlin was 19 years old a senior in the age of a cat he didn't look or act that way. I didn't want to accept the fact that he was nearing the end of his lifetime. My job at the law firm was so demanding and stressful that I couldn't imagine getting through the day without Merlin waiting to greet me at home.

I dialed the vet's number. I asked for my husband but he already left. Then I took a breath and asked the question that no one wants to ask “Is my Merlin still alive?” The nurse said “yes.”

Ron came home and said that Merlin had almost no red blood cells left. White blood cells were replacing them. Merlin would need expensive transfusions most likely on a monthly basis. We both knew Merlin was running out of time. I asked Ron to drive me to the vet so I could say goodbye to my little boy cat but he was beat tired and it was late. Ron said if Merlin was still alive the next morning then he would take me to the vet.

The next morning I called the vet. Merlin had survived the night.

After driving to the vet I went into the examining room. The nurse brought Merlin and placed him on an examining table on his side. His eyes were tightly shut. I thought he died already. I carefully edged my hand to reach his body. His body felt warm but when I spoke his name there was no response. No response to his name or that I was there and that I loved him. I was extremely sad.

In that examining room I felt helpless. I wondered how many people in an examining room felt as helpless as I did.

Feeling driven to prayer I yelled “God this isn't good enough. I need to see my Merlin the way I remember him I need a miracle and I need it now!”

At that moment God granted a miracle. Merlin's favorite compliment entered my mind. I said “Merlin You are Beautiful and You are Gorgeous do you hear me?” One eye opened.

I said “Gotcha”. I kept repeating those words.

Merlin opened the other eye and one limb at a time got up. He was waiting for that phrase. He wanted to hear that he was beautiful and gorgeous again.

    Then I experienced another miracle.

There was no sound in that examining room until Merlin started walking to me. From out of nowhere or maybe from heaven I clearly heard a song we sung in church often: “It Is Well With My Soul.” I remembered thinking “Yes it is well with my Soul. I got to see my little boy cat one more time.”

Merlin walked to me. He put his face in mine which he had never done before. He rubbed a circle around my face twice. Merlin said goodbye with his face and marked me for life.

Ron appeared shocked that Merlin was up and had walked to me. I said to Merlin “Tell God you are a good boy and how much we love you” and then handed him back to the nurse.

Tears of gratitude poured forth in memory of a miracle. You see for nineteen years God spoke to me through a special cat named “Merlin.” On Merlin's last day God proved he heard me when he granted a miracle. That miracle gave me time to say goodbye.

The idea of progress started to flower in the 17th century. At that time, many wise thinkers believed that man liberated(解放) by reason would rise to greater heights of achievement. The many expressions of human nature would be the engines of progress: language, business, science, and moral sensibility (道德感). Unfortunately, most of those engines have failed to bring the desired human progress.

The modern age has belonged to material progress and its main source has been science. Science gives people huge power to change the world. But can people be trusted to use it always for good? Think of biotechnology and information technology. And it is not just that scientific progress does not deliver the emotional good. People also fear that mankind is failing to manage science properly. The forests are disappearing; the ice is melting; privacy is leaking; life is becoming a depressing march in an ugly world.

The point is not that science is harmful, but that scientific progress needs to be mapped tidily onto human progress. That relies on moral sensibility in its widest sense. This liberal force offers hope for a better future. The very idea of moral sensibility probably sounds out-of-date. Bur researchers find that people desire a sense of moral purpose which would give life dignity (尊严). People want to determine how the world works, not always to be determined by it. Moral sensibility is why people will suffer from their beliefs, and why acts of noble self﹣sacrifice are so powerful.

It is admitted that our moral ideals will never be realized completely. But sometimes, however imperfectly, we can make progress. Human dignity requires the love of ideals for their own sake, but nothing requires that the love be returned.

Human progress is neither guaranteed nor hopeless. Instead, it is up to us.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳答案。

There are moments in life when you miss someone so much that you just want to pick them from your dreams and hug them for real! Dream what you want to dream; go where you want to go; be what you want to be, because you have only one life and one chance to do all the things you want to do.

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough difficulties to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human, enough hope to make you happy.

Always put yourself in others' shoes. If you feel that it hurts you, it probably hurts the other person, too.

The happiest people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. Happiness lies for those who cry, those who hurt, those who have searched, and those who have tried, for they can appreciate the importance of people who have touched their lives.

Love begins with a smile, grows with a kiss and ends with a tear. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past, and you can't go on well in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.

When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling. Live your life so that when you die, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

Please send this message to those people who mean something to you, to those who have touched your life in one way or another, to those who make you smile when you really need it, to those who make you see the brighter side of things when you are really down, to those who you want to let know that you appreciate their friendship. And if you don't, don't worry; nothing bad will happen to you. You will just miss out on the opportunity to brighten someone's day with this message.
