As my dad unwrapped(打开)the new bicycle helmet(头盔)that I got him for his birthday, I realized that a number of people ride their bicycles every day without the protection of a helmet.

Due to cold winters across the country, riding has become increasingly dangerous as many roads have holes and are torn-up(磨损的). Not everyone realizes that there are laws requiring the wearing of helmets in many places.

Where I live, there has been a law in place since October 1, 1992 stating that cyclists of all ages are required to wear helmets. Unfortunately, accidents can happen to the best of riders. My dad has been a cyclist for many years, and he often rides around my county and to Rockland Lake State Park.

One afternoon, as he was just entering the park, he lost control of his bicycle and flew off and landed on a nearby patch of grass, breaking his helmet into pieces and losing consciousness(知觉). When he was just awakening, a lovely couple found him and brought him back to our house, where he attempted to recall the events leading up to his fall. Later that day, a CAT scan showed that he had a concussion (脑震荡). That evening, while my dad was showing me the pieces of his broken helmet, we both came to a shocking realization.

If he had not worn his helmet, he probably would have cracked his skull and perhaps died. Today, when my dad and I go out cycling, the wearing of our helmets is not even a question. Regardless of age, everyone should wear a helmet whenever they get on a bicycle.

(1)、In the writer's opinion, why should people wear bicycle helmets?
A、Because a law requires them to do so. B、Because many people like wearing bicycle helmets. C、Because people have realized the importance of wearing helmets. D、Because the conditions of roads are very poor and it is dangerous to ride on them.
(2)、The underlined part “we both came to a shocking realization” in Paragraph 4 means “_______”.
A、we understood how lucky the dad was to have worn a helmet B、we were shocked to see the broken helmet C、we realized that young people needn't wear helmets D、only old people should wear helmets
(3)、From the accident that happened to the writer's dad, we can infer that ___________.
A、the cyclists should follow the law B、his dad was not worried about this accident C、it is necessary for cyclists to wear helmets D、everyone should care about life

Scientists investigated why Ebola virus is so deadly when it spreads from animals to humans and then from human-to-human contact. The research team looked at the Zaire Ebola virus in an animal system to understand how it gains strength. This virus is responsible for the current outbreak in West Africa. They found that initially the animal systems were not affected by the virus, but succeeding transmission(传送) into other animals caused the virus to “hot up” and become more severe.

The team analyzed the viruses at different stages and were able to identify several changes in its genetic material that were associated with increased disease.

Professor Julian Hiscox, who led the study from the University's Institute of Infection and Global Health, explains: “The work tells us that the evolutionary goal of Ebola virus is to become more fatal.”

“We were able to show through genetic analysis which parts of the virus are involved in this process. The information we have gathered will now allow us to monitor for such changes in an outbreak as well as develop future treatment strategies.”

Professor Roger Hewson, leading the study from Public Health England, Porton Down, said: “Ebola virus is such a destructive infection to the people affected by the disease and the economy of West Africa.”

“Our understanding of Ebola virus biology is way behind that of other viruses and our cooperation shows how we can bring together our specialists' skills to close this knowledge gap.”

Professor Miles Carroll, a co-author of the work, said: “This study has allowed the team to be at the forefront of developing methodologies to analyze patient samples recently taken by the European Mobile Laboratory from West Africa to understand disease evolution during the current outbreak.”

Friends are important to children.Research shows that children who have no friends can suffer from difficulties later in life.Friendship provides children with more than just fun.In making friends, children learn how to get in touch with others and solve problems.Having friends even does good to children for they can help each other during class.

If the parents are concerned about whether their children make many friends, what matters is that the child is comfortable and happy with his friends.Parents need to understand the steps children take in building friendships.First of all,be a friend to your child.Good friendships start at home.Children begin to develop the necessary ability to go out and meet others through getting along with their parents. Greet the child warmly and let him know you are glad to see him.Children learn a lot from how their parents stay with them and other people.

Teach children how to solve conflicts(争端).Being able to work out conflicts is an important skill in getting along with others. If parents know the children have a conflict, let them work it out on their own.Only step in if it is really necessary, for example,an argument is getting physical.

Give children chances to practice staying together.Have children play games that require cooperation. For example, races are fun and provide plenty of practice in teamwork.“In what ways didn't you work well together? What might you do differently next time?” For these ideas, see books such as Games Book by Telly Orlick and Team—Building by Alanna Jones.

Encourage children to show thanks to others. The parents can encourage children to do this by setting the example for them.

Cultural rules determine every aspect of food consumption. Who eats together defines social units. For example, in some societies, the nuclear family is the unit that regularly eats together. The anthropologist Mary Douglas has pointed out that, for the English, the kind of meal and the kind of food that is served relate to the kinds of social links between people who are eating together. She distinguishes between regular meals, Sunday meals when relatives may come, and cocktail parties for relatives and friends. The food served symbolizes the occasion and reflects who is present. For example, only snacks are served at a cocktail party. It would be inappropriate to serve a steak or hamburgers. The distinctions among cocktails, regular meals, and special dinners mark the social boundaries between those guests who are invited for drinks, those who are invited to dinner, and those who come to a family meal. In this example, the type of food symbolizes the category of guest and with whom it is eaten.

In some New Guinea societies, the nuclear family is not the unit that eats together. The men take their meals in a men's house, separately from their wives and children. Women prepare and eat their food in their own houses and take the husband's portion to the men's house. The women eat with their children in their own houses. This pattern is also widespread among Near Eastern societies.

Eating is a metaphor that is sometimes used to signify marriage. In many New Guinea societies, like that of the Lesu on the island of New Ireland in the Pacific and that of the Trobriand Islanders, marriage is symbolized by the couple's eating together for the first time. Eating symbolizes their new status as a married couple. In U.S. society, it is just the reverse. A couple may go out to dinner on a first date.

Other cultural rules have to do with taboos against eating certain things. In some societies, members of a family group, are not allowed to eat the animal or bird that is their totemic ancestor. Since they believe themselves to be descended from that ancestor, it would be like eating that ancestor or eating themselves.

There is also an association between food prohibitions and rank, which is found in its most extreme form in the caste system of India. A caste system consists of ranked groups, each with a different economic specialization. In India, there is an association between caste and the idea of pollution. Members of highly ranked groups can be polluted by coming into contact with the bodily secretions, particularly saliva(唾液),of individuals of lower-ranked castes. Because of the fear of pollution, Brahmans and other high-ranked individuals will not share food with, not eat from the same plate as, not even accept food from an individual or from a low-ranking class.
