World Earth Day is a special day to call for people to protect the environment. It is on April22ªᵈ. It began in the US on April 22"d, 1970. It is now celebrated every year by people around the world. Although pollution is still everywhere, we can make a difference. Here is an example. Every day, Judy Smith, a 16-year-old girl, waters and cares for the trees at school. A rainstorm hit the area on March 10th, 2024 and some of trees at school fell down. Judy was in the classroom when the rainstorm came. She could feel the wind shaking the windows and saw the trees falling down. Judy used to sit under the trees and enjoy some relaxing time. She didn't want to lose the trees. As a member of the School Green Team, Judy decided to offer help. She came up with a planting plan and called for her team members to help. Now they often help plant trees and take care of them. The headteacher, Mike Smith, said the school was lucky to have this plan."Some of those trees were as old as the buildings, and it was sad to see them fall,"he said. Judy is proud whenever she helps protect the environment. She hopes that more students can join them. |
Dust storms(沙尘暴) appear when strong wind blows sand and dirt from a dry surface. Strong dust storms may cause deaths, so you should know how to protect yourself from dust storms when you meet them.
Be careful of dust storm warnings | Dust storms probably happen on hot summer days, and it's not safe for people to travel during this period. So you should listen to the local TV or radio before travelling, and consider changing or giving up your trip if dust storms are predicted(预测). |
Be prepared | If you are in a place where storms happen often, carry a mask(面具) to keep dust and dirt away from your face, and a pair of glasses to protect your eyes. |
Stay inside | Do not move around when a dust storm comes, as you will not be able to see hidden(隐藏) dangers. So if you are in a house, don't go out and just stay inside. |
Protect yourself from flying objects | Cover your body as much as possible in a dust storm. A strong wind of dust storms can carry heavy objects, so you should try to stay low, and close to the ground, and protect your head with your arms or a backpack. |
Dear Li Hua, How are you? It's in the middle of December and I am getting ready for Christmas here. I'd like to tell you about Christmas in the UK. Christmas is on 25th December. We don't go to school or work on that day. On Christmas Eve children put up big socks. Do you know why we do this? We wait for Father Christmas with presents. He is a fat man with white beard(胡子). We think he comes and puts presents in socks every year. The next day, we get up early and open our presents. Then we have a big dinner with our family. We put a Christmas tree in our house and decorate (装饰) it with lights and presents. In the afternoon, we watch TV or play games at home. Please tell me something about Spring Festival in China. What do your family do on Spring Festival Eve(前夕)? Hope to hear from you soon. Best wishes, Tony |

For most people, worms(蠕虫) and snakes are animals nobody loves. Fair or not, they are usually the characters that set bad examples. This is also true in American English expressions(表达). ●If you don't like worms, one is bad enough. But a whole can of worms is really bad! A can of worms is a set of very difficult problems. And to open a can of worms means to share those problems with other people who may not want to know about them. ●One reason many people fear snakes is because they bite. And who wants to get bit by a snake, right? So, snakebite means to be very unlucky. For example, if your favorite soccer team is snakebite, ____▲____ Besides the terrible way they move, snakes and worms have something else in common. In American English, calling someone a snake or a worm means that person is not liked or respected. |
