Happiness means different things to different people. For Mary, who has {#blank#}1{#/blank#} severe sleeping problem, happiness is as simple as having a good night's sleep.

    Bed was once a place {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Mary went to rest after a long, hard day. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}, she has not had a full night's sleep in almost six months. Her doctor said that {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (count) sheep might help her fall asleep. She tried this, but soon got tired of it after it failed to work. She finds the nights without sleep almost {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (bear) . She is always sleepy and lacks energy during the day.

    Mary is not alone. Studies show that more than one in three people worldwide struggle with getting enough sleep. It often takes on different {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (form) : some people can get to sleep, but wake up much too early; some get a full night's sleep, but are {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (disappoint)  to find that they still feel tired when they wake up; others, like Mary, find {#blank#}8{#/blank#} difficult to fall asleep in the first place.

    Specialists say that people should not worry too much about this problem. In most cases , a lack of sleep {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (cause) by anxiety and pressure. It is important to keep yourself {#blank#}10{#/blank#} good spirits and to be positive. 

    At 3:42 a.m., everything began to shake. It seemed as if the world was at an end! Eleven kilometres {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (direct) below the city, the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (great) earthquake of the 20th century had begun. It was felt in Beijing, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} is more than two hundred kilometres away. One-third of the nation {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (feel) it. A huge crack that was eight kilometres long and thirty metres wide cut across houses, roads and canals. Steam burst from holes in the ground. Hard hills of rock became rivers of dirt. In fifteen terrible seconds a large city lay {#blank#}5{#/blank#} ruins. The suffering of the people {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (be) extreme. Two-thirds of {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (they) died or were injured during the earthquake. Thousands of families were killed and many {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (child) were left without parents. The number of people who were killed or injured reached more than 400,000. Then, later that afternoon, another big quake shook Tangshan. More buildings fell down. Water, food, and electricity were hard {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (get). People began to wonder {#blank#}10{#/blank#} long the disaster would last.

    For Nigel Portman, a love of travelling began with what's called a "gap year". In common with many other British teenagers, he chose {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (take) a year out before settling down to study for his degree. After doing various {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (job) to raise some money, he left home to gain some experience of life in different cultures, visiting America and Asia. The more adventurous a young person, the {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (great) challenge they are likely to set {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (them) for the gap year, and for some, like Nigel, it can result in a thirst for adventure.

    Now that his university course {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (come) to an end, Nigel is just about to leave on a three—year trip that will take him right around the world. What's more, he plans to make the whole journey {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (use) only means of transport which are powered by natural energy. In other words, he'll be relying {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (main) on bicycles and his own legs; and when there's an ocean to cross, he won't be taking a shortcut (捷径) {#blank#}8{#/blank#} flying aboard—he'll be joining the crew of a sailing ship, instead.

    As well as doing some mountain climbing along {#blank#}9{#/blank#} way, Nigel hopes to pass on to the people he meets the environmental message {#blank#}10{#/blank#} lies behind the whole idea.

    Once there lived a rich man {#blank#}1{#/blank#}wanted to do something for the people of his town. But first he wanted {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (find) out whether they deserved his help.

    In the centre of the main road into the town, he placed{#blank#}3{#/blank#} very large stone. Then he {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(bury) himself behind a tree and waited. Soon an old man came along with his cow.

    "Who put this stone in the centre of the road?" said the old man, but he did not try to remove the stone. Instead, with some difficulty he passed around the stone {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (slow) and continued on his way. Another man came along and did the same thing ; then another came, and another. All of them complained about the stone but not tried to remove {#blank#}6{#/blank#}. Late in the afternoon a young man came along . He saw the stone, {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(say) to  himself ,"The night will be very dark. Some {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(neighbor) will come along later in the dark and will fall against the stone."

    Then he began to move the stone. He pushed with all his {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(strong) to move it. How great his surprise was at last! He found a bag of money {#blank#}10{#/blank#} the stone.
