The history of Chinese currency covers more than 3,000 years. Currency of some type has been used in China since the Neolithic age (新石器时代),  can be traced back to between 3,000 and 4,500 years ago. Cowry shells (贝壳) are believed to have been the  (early) form of currency used in Central China, and were used during the Neolithic period. The use of shell money is confirmed in the Chinese writing system. The traditional  (character) for “goods”, “buy” and “sell”, in addition to other  (vary) words relating to exchange, all contain the “shell”.

Around 210 BC, the first emperor of China Qin Shi Huang (260 — 210 BC) abolished all other forms of local currency and introduced uniform copper coin. Although paper money  (invent) in China in the 9th century, the base unit of currency remained the copper coin. Copper coins were used the chief currency in China until the  (introduce) of yuan in the late 19th century.

Currently, the RMB is the official currency of China. With over 1.3 billion people  (use) RMB every day, it is one of the most commonly used currencies in the world. Nowadays, online payment is taking a large share in the market. Will paper money disappear one day like shells or copper coins  (replace) by a new way of payment? Only time can tell.

China, which takes pride in inventions in ancient times, has once again shown its{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(able) to change the world with its “new four great inventions”: high-speed railways, electronic payments, shared bicycles and online shopping. The “new four great inventions” are all related{#blank#}2{#/blank#}China's high-tech innovation(创新){#blank#}3{#/blank#}improved the quality of people's lives. “My wallet is no longer in use. I can buy and eat{#blank#}4{#/blank#}I want simply with a tap of my phone,” said Lin Jinlong{#blank#}5{#/blank#}overseas Chinese student from Cambodia{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(add) that “even pancake sellers are using Alipay (mobile payment). We can also order food at home, which is super convenient. If I{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(be) at home in Cambodia, I would have to go outdoors.”

The bikes themselves are not new, but the operating model of bike-sharing is based on satellite navigation system, mobile payment, big data and other high technologies. It is{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(increase) clear that China is innovating and no longer copying Western ideas. This is partly because China skipped over the PC age and went directly to mobile. China has the{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(large) mobile use in the world.

In terms of the “new four great inventions”, Charlie Dai, principal analyst of American market research company Forrester, said, “These products and services{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(improve) customer experience so far, improving national and global economy at the same time”.

There was once a {#blank#}1{#/blank#}distinguish king whose name was Tamerlane. Like Alexander the Great, he wished to become one of the masters of the whole world. So he raised a great army and made war on other countries. He conquered many kings and occupied many cities. But with his army{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (beat) at last, Tamerlane escaped alone from the field of battle, looking{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(misery)

For a long time he wandered in fear from place to place. His enemies were looking for him. He was about to lose all hope. One day lying under a tree, he thought of his failure. Feeling discouraged, he supposed that he couldn't carry on any longer. Suddenly he saw a small object climbing up the trunk (树干) of the tree. He looked more closely and saw an ant and a grain of wheat{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(carry) by it.

There was a hole in the tree only a little way above, and that was the home of the ant. “You are brave, Mr.Ant,” he said, “but you are carrying something that is too heavy for you.” Just as he spoke, the ant lost its footing and fell to the ground. But it still held on to the grain of wheat. Tamerlane watched the little insect. It tried the second time. The twentieth time—but always{#blank#}5{#/blank#}vain. “I am{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (awful) sorry for you.” Tamerlane thought. He had some doubt {#blank#}7{#/blank#}the ant could succeed or not. Then it tried the twenty-first time. Slowly, one little step at a time, it climbed across the rough place at{#blank#}8{#/blank#}it had fallen so often. The next minute it climbed safely into its home, carrying the grain of wheat. His constant efforts paid off. “Well done!” said Tamerlane, “you've taught me a lesson. I, too, will try, try again, till I succeed.” He {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(set) about reorganizing his army. And at last he realized his ambition{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(defeat) once or twice doesn't matter too much. What matters much is to lose heart forever.

The young artist and potter Allan had a wife and two fine sons. One night, his older son developed a severe stomachache. Neither Allan nor his wife took the condition very{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(serious), but the boy died suddenly that night.

Knowing the death could {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (avoid) if he had only realized the seriousness of the situation, he always felt he was guilty. Worse still, his wife left him a short time later, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (leave) him alone with his 6-year-old younger son. Unable to stand the hurt and pain, he turned to alcohol and became {#blank#}4{#/blank#} alcoholic.

As the alcoholism {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (progress), Allan began to lose everything he possessed and finally died alone in a small bar. Hearing of his death, I thought, "{#blank#}6{#/blank#} a complete failure!"

As time went by, I began to revalue my {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (early) rough judgment. I knew Allan's now adult son, Ernie, one of the kindest and most caring men I've ever known. I hadn't heard him talk much about his father. One day, I worked up my courage to ask him what {#blank#}8{#/blank#} earth his father had done so that he became such a special person. Ernie said quietly, "As a child until I left home at 18, Allan came into my room every night, gave me a kiss and said, 'love you, son'."

Tears came to my eyes as I realized that I had been a fool to judge Allan {#blank#}9{#/blank#} a failure. He had not left any material {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (possess) behind. But he had been a kind loving father, and left behind his best love.
