It seems that Chinese people have always loved to discuss  differences between northerners and southerners. Now, another difference has drawn wide attention: the way northerners and southerners shop for food at markets.

People from southern China normally buy they need for just one or two meals at a time. It's normal for them to buy just half a Chinese cabbage, two (potato)and 25 grams of beef at a time, , a person may be laughed at if they do this in the north. Instead, buying enough vegetables and meat for a week (be)normal.

The difference could be because the different climates. Food can (keep)for a long time in the north, as it's (usual)cold and dry there. Many northerners have the habit of (store)food for a long time. But due to the hot and wet weather in the south, southern Chinese people prefer (buy)just enough food for one meal or one day. Otherwise, the food may go bad.

Maybe these debates about different customs help us to understand each other better.

People have all turned to sad music to make themselves feel better at some point in their lives,

{#blank#}1{#/blank#}why does the music with double or even triple(三倍) sadness help drag people out of low spirits?

A new study throws light on what's going on inside people's brains when they match their music to their feelings, and it looks as if sad music can be enjoyable, rather than{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(simple) depressing. Music of this sort can arouse positive memories in people's life, thus {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(lift)their mood.

Psychologist Adrian North from Curtin University in Australia says there{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(existence) two groups of possible explanations for why people enjoy listening to sad music like this——one from social psychology, and the other from cognitive neuroscience(神经学).

{#blank#}5{#/blank#}terms of social psychology, one idea about this is that people will feel{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(good) about themselves if they focus on someone who's doing even worse. Everything's going to be okay, because this person is having {#blank#}7{#/blank#}even worse day than they are.

Another idea from social psychology is that people like to listen to the very music {#blank#}8{#/blank#} shows their present life circumstances, because this kind of music makes them feel they are understood. With their emotions{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (share), they definitely get a certain amount of comfort.

So, the{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (conclude) again—sad music does cheer people up, and it works far better than happy music, in most cases.

Have you ever awakened and felt like you couldn't move? If so, it {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (probable) scared you. You may have thought something terrible had happened to you. Actually, many people have this experience on a regular basis. It {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (call) sleep paralysis(瘫痪). {#blank#}3{#/blank#} it sounds scary, it is normal.

Sleep paralysis happens when a person is falling asleep or waking up. As the person falls asleep, his or her body slows down. Usually the person's mind {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(relax) at the same time, but occasionally the mind stays awake{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(long) than the body. As a result, the person can be conscious, or aware, but have trouble moving or {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(speak). Sleep paralysis can also occur as you wake up. Fortunately, the condition rarely lasts for more than a few seconds. {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(move) and speech soon return to normal.

Some people report unusual experiences during sleep paralysis. They may hear, see or feel things {#blank#}8{#/blank#}don't exist. At one time, people {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(think) that ghosts or monsters had entered the room and were holding them down, keeping them from moving. Science has helped us understand that such visions are actually part of sleep paralysis. Now we know that getting too little sleep, taking certain medications(药物), and changing your sleep schedule can cause sleep paralysis. This condition can be scary, but it's just a trick that you mind is playing {#blank#}10{#/blank#} your body.
