It seems that Chinese people have always loved to discuss  differences between northerners and southerners. Now, another difference has drawn wide attention: the way northerners and southerners shop for food at markets.

People from southern China normally buy they need for just one or two meals at a time. It's normal for them to buy just half a Chinese cabbage, two (potato)and 25 grams of beef at a time, , a person may be laughed at if they do this in the north. Instead, buying enough vegetables and meat for a week (be)normal.

The difference could be because the different climates. Food can (keep)for a long time in the north, as it's (usual)cold and dry there. Many northerners have the habit of (store)food for a long time. But due to the hot and wet weather in the south, southern Chinese people prefer (buy)just enough food for one meal or one day. Otherwise, the food may go bad.

Maybe these debates about different customs help us to understand each other better.

The pickle (泡菜) jar as far back as I can remember sat on the floor beside the dresser (梳妆台) in my parents' bedroom. The first Christmas after our daughter Jessica was born, we made an {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(appoint) to visit my parents so we spent the holiday with them. Now our big family consists of five people. When Susan came back into the living room, she said softly, "Look". To my amazement, there stood the old pickle jar, the bottom already{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (cover) with coins. I walked over to the pickle jar, dug down into my pocket, and pulled out a fistful of coins.

With the strong emotion choking me, I dropped the coins into the jar. I looked up and saw Dad who was carrying Jessica. Our eyes locked, and I knew he was feeling the same emotions as I felt.
