Daniel Davila can often {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (see) walking around the city of San Francisco. Sometimes people are surprised to see him walking   {#blank#}2{#/blank#}any shoes or socks, {#blank#}3{#/blank#}Daniel doesn't mind at all. He likes to walk barefoot, and so {#blank#}4{#/blank#} 740 other members of Dirty Sole Society, the club that Daniel started years ago. Daniel's idea for this is to encourage others to live{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (free) —free of shoes.

    According to Daniel, the barefoot life has many advantages. {#blank#}6{#/blank#}most important is simply that it feels good. He also says that  {#blank#}7{#/blank#} ( walk) barefoot allows you to experience the world directly by touching it with your feet. In addition, the feet do not smell so much  {#blank#}8{#/blank#} they stay dry, making it hard for bacteria to grow. And of course, walking barefoot keeps your feet{#blank#}9{#/blank#} good shape, so it's actually{#blank#}10{#/blank#} (healthy) than wearing shoes.

Using Garbage as a Fuel

    Garbage can be a good fuel to use. The things in garbage do not look {#blank#}1{#/blank#}coal, petroleum, or natural gas, but they are chemically similar to these fossil fuels. As we use up our fossil fuel supplies, we might be able to use garbage as {#blank#}2{#/blank#}energy source. Burning garbage {#blank#}3{#/blank#}( be) not a new idea. Some cities in Europe and the United States {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(burn) garbage for years. The heat that is produced by burning garbage is used to boil water. The steam that is produced is used to make electricity or to heat nearby {#blank#}5{#/blank#}( build). In Paris, France, some power plants burn almost 2 million metric tons of the city's garbage each year. The amount of energy {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(produce) is about the same as would be produced by burning almost a half million barrels of oil!

    But there are problems in using garbage as a fuel. Garbage that burns {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(easy) , such as food and paper, must be separated from metals, glass, and other materials {#blank#}8{#/blank#}do not. Another problem is that burning garbage can pollute the air. Our fossil fuel supplies are {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(limit) . Burning garbage might be one kind of energy source that we can use to help meet our energy needs. This method could also reduce the amount of garbage {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(pile) up on the earth.

    A motto is a sentence or a phrase which can inspire us especially when we are {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (face) with difficulties. Many of us use well-know {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (say) as mottos, such as “Where there is a will, there is a way.” Or “nothing is difficult if you put your heat into it.”, and so on. My motto is “God helps those who help{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Sometimes I am lazy {#blank#}4{#/blank#} don't want to make efforts to work hard, but the moment I think of my motto I will get{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(energy) again and devote myself to what I am doing. I write my motto {#blank#}6{#/blank#} I can see it easily. Every time I fail in my exam and begin to lose heart, the sight of my motto inspires me {#blank#}7{#/blank#} much confidence. My motto also makes me become an {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (dependent) person. That is to say, I won't rely on others {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (easy). My friends, what is your motto?     So why has English changed {#blank#}1{#/blank#} time? Actually all languages change and develop {#blank#}2{#/blank#} cultures meet and communicate with each other. At first the English spoken in England between about AD 450 and 1150 was very different from the English spoken today. It was based more on German {#blank#}3{#/blank#} the English we speak at present. Then gradually between about 800 and 1150, English became {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (little) like German because those {#blank#}5{#/blank#} ruled English spoke first Danish and later French. These new comers {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (rich) the English language and especially {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (it) vocabulary. So by the 1600s Shakespeare was able to make use of a wider vocabulary than ever before. In 1620 some British {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (settle) moved to America. Later in the 18^th century some British people {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (take) to Australia too. English began to be spoken in both countries. Today, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} number of people learning English in the world is increasing rapidly.
