Chuck Wall teaches management and human relations at Bakersfield College. He walked into class one day and told his students that their homework was to perform a simple and random act of kindness. Not {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (understand) the homework, the students didn't know what to do. Chuck didn't answer their questions. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}, he encouraged his students to work it out by themselves.

    One week later, the students entered the classroom and began sharing their stories {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (excited). One reported on helping a poor dog {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (abandon) by its owner. Another student told others about giving blankets away to the homeless. Gradually, more and more students developed the habit of doing such kind acts, from {#blank#}5{#/blank#} they benefited a lot.

    Since then, similar kind acts {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (perform) in schools around the world. Many schools organize a Random Acts of Kindness Week, around November 13^th, {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (celebrate) World Kindness Day. Some schools use each day of Random Acts of Kindness Week to perform a {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (differ) kind act, such {#blank#}9{#/blank#} making a new friend, helping someone, doing community service or raising money for a charity. In this way, students learn to consider other people and think about how small actions can make the world a {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (good) place.

    I'm {#blank#}1{#/blank#}only child of my parents, so they are worried {#blank#}2{#/blank#}everything I do. For example, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} I ride my bike, my parents won't let me {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(ride) by myself. They are afraid I might fall off my bike and hurt {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. They are taking great trouble to support the bike, with my mother even {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(carry) a first-aid box. I'm not free to ride and I often say {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(angry), “why not let me ride alone?”

    Now, most families have one child. Parents want to do everything for their children. This does no good {#blank#}8{#/blank#}them. Too much love from parents may prevent children from {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(be) independent. In my opinion, parents should let their children do {#blank#}10{#/blank#}they should do alone.

    Our experience at the Children's Medical Care Center was eye-opening. We saw a lot of children without hair due to their radioactive {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(treat). We played with them and taught them to draw pictures. The children, though {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(suffer) such great pains, were so friendly that it was much easier to interact with them than we {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(expect).

    One day, an incident deeply touched us. A girl suggested that she {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(teach) us how to fold paper. She taught us with great patience, {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(explain) each step clearly. Though we could easily do that, we still pretended to know nothing about it. We followed her, step by step, doing everything {#blank#}6{#/blank#}she told us. Finally, when we finished our work {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(succeed), she gave each of us a big hug. We could see the pride on her face. Her father was so thankful to us that he held our hands tightly, tears in his eyes. And it was not until then {#blank#}8{#/blank#} we knew the girl would receive an operation the next day.

    Many stories happened at the center. It was really a {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(value) experience to us all, enriching our life {#blank#}10{#/blank#}a positive way.

    I love reading. At age 6, I could be found reading Harry Potter, a difficult book for a 6-year-old but I {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(enjoy) it all the same. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} soon became obvious that spelling for me was not difficult and I had a wide vocabulary. This is one way I benefited {#blank#}3{#/blank#} reading at such a young age.

    My advice for you as English learners would be to read the English novels {#blank#}4{#/blank#}you have often read in your native language. Reading novels is a great way of {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(improve) your vocabulary and spelling without realising it as you are absorbed（全神贯注的）in the storyline. You know the sorry well, so its {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(usual) easy to follow it in English even if you do not understand every word.

    This is another essential（基本的）point: it's not necessary {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(understand) every word. If you understand the {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(mean) of the sentence, each word is not necessarily important. Quite often, if a word is used several times in a text, you'll gradually get an idea of {#blank#}9{#/blank#} it means.

    Give it a try. If you like reading yon could open up {#blank#}10{#/blank#} whole new world of literature.

    Tomb Sweeping Day-the day on {#blank#}1{#/blank#} people remember their dead {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (relative) and visit their graves, has just gone. But this year, an interesting story happened on that day. Let me share {#blank#}3{#/blank#} with you.

    At that night, after dinner, a boy was taking a walk in the road. When he walked past a convenience store he thought of going in {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (buy) something. Then he realized that he didn't have money with him. So, his mother {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (phone) to bring some money to him.

    While {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (wait) for his money, the boy saw an old man burning joss paper by the road. “What are you doing here?” the boy {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (ask) him. “I am sending money to my family.” he said. Then he asked the boy, “What are you doing here?” “I'm waiting for my family to send money to me.”

    {#blank#}8{#/blank#}hearing this, the old man's face turned pale and he ran away {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (immediate). The boy shouted to him, “Hey, don't run! I'm just waiting for my family to send money to me!” Suddenly, all the people {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (burn) joss paper nearby also ran away.

    Man Kaur started running in 2009, {#blank#}1{#/blank#}she was in her 90s and began racking up medals. At 103, Man Kaur is not only going strong, she's getting others to follow in her footsteps as well.

    India's oldest female athlete is spending her summer {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(coach) 30 young athletes. Kaur and her 81-year-old son and trainer, Gurdev Singh, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (invite) for two weeks to several universities, {#blank#}4{#/blank#}their methods made such an improvement in the students' performance that they were asked {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(stay) through September.

    This invitation came on the heels of Kaur's participation in the World Masters Athletics Championships in Poland earlier this year, where she {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(win) gold in all four events. Though she was the only {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(compete) in her age category for all four events, for the 60-meter dash, she had company from other categories: two 85-year-olds and three 90-year-olds. Though they weren't competing for the prize in her age bracket, they ran alongside her and {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (eventual) ahead of her.

    Ten years after she first started running, Kaur still loves it, according to her son. "She enjoys {#blank#}9{#/blank#}company of her admirers," her son adds. "Every time she participates, she feels proud that people around the world feel {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(inspire)."
