Smog is a big problem in many Chinese cities. But it seems that besides wearing a mask, few of us know what has caused the smog and what to do to beat it. In fact, burning too much coal and oil are the main causes of PM2.5 and smog (雾霾).

    To solve the problem, we should clean our coal and oil or replace them with cleaner energy such as natural gas. We ordinary people can do something to help control smog, too.

    What can we do to help beat the smog?

    Choose to take public transportation. Though many people have their own cars, they had better take public transportation, such as the subway or buses. If the destination (目的地) is not far away, you can also walk ________ ride a bike.

    Call the hotline 12369. You can call the number for complaints and questions about environmental issues. It is run by China's Ministry of Environmental Protection. If you call the number, some officers can come and try to solve the issues, so please remember it.

Report and resist pollutant source. If you find any pollutant source, take a picture of it and post it on your social media accounts. Remember to add “@local environmental departments” on weibo. Payattention to factories that pollute the environment and don't buy products from them.

    Our environment will become better if everyone is concerned (关注) with the environment. This is what we need in the future. So everyone can do something to beat smog.

    When you are on a long road trip or in a traffic jam during a daily-commute ， it may seem harmless to connect your phone to your car's USB port．But unless you really need to use your phone，charging(充电)your iphone during your commute could be a big mistake．

    Why? For starters，the USB port in our car probably provides less electricity than your phone really needs to charge．As a result，your phone might stop working while it charges.

    Many people may notice that on their way home from work their phone charged very little during their 30-60 minute commute，"says Brad Nichols，an engineer at Staymobile．"It is mostly because that the phone is using more power than the car charger isproviding it．"

    Nichols also says that your phone could receive too much power，especially if you are using a cigarette lighter port to charge up．Most cigarette lighters can provide more power than most chargers can afford．If a charger cannot keep providing the proper power, it may make the phone broken．

    Charging your phone could do harm to your car's battery(电池)，too．This usually isn't a big deal for those who own new cars with healthy batteries，Nichols says．But if your car is older，you might not want to charge your phone through its USB port．

    Most importantly，it's not safe to use your phone while driving．"Anytime a person's hands leave the wheel or eyes leave the road，it becomes dangerous for them and the other people around them," Nichols points out．Bottom line：Play it safe，and wait until you get home to charge your phone．

    Thousands of years ago. in the south of ancient China, there lived Shennong, a man who had an ox(牛) head and human body. Seeing that local people were suffering from disease, he built ladders and houses on a high mountain to store hundreds of medical plants. To remember him, people named the place Shennongjia.

    The legend(传说) makes Shennongjia in Hubei an inviting place for tourists. Travelling there is a unique experience, as you can see sceneries of the four seasons from different altitudes. “When the bottom of the mountain is summer, the top is spring and while the foothill is autumn, the top is covered with ice," local people say of the special climate of Shennongjia.

    Shennongjia is also home to 5, 000 species of animals and plants. Many animals in danger live there, such as the golden monkey, the clouded leopard and the Asian black bear.

    One interesting and mysterious thing about Shennongjia is its legend of wild men. Some people once claimed that they saw big footprints or big-foot creatures. Yet so far, scientists haven't proved it is true and some say they are just bears.

    The beautiful place has recently received a new title. On July 17, 2016, Shennongjia Forestry District was added to United Nations World Heritage list as a natural site. China now has 52 world heritage sites(遗址)，second only to Italy in the world.

    There are lots of objects that we see in the sky. During the day we see the sun. After the sunset in the evening, we see mostly the stars. Not all the lights in the sky that we see are really stars.

    Of course, we see the moon. Some of the other lights in the sky are planets. Planets revolve (转动) around the sun like earth does.

    Once in a while someone will see what they call a shooting star.

    Shooting star looks like a star that is moving quickly across the sky. Some people believe that seeing a shooting star will bring them good luck. It's hard to find shooting star because they disappear fast.

    The correct name for a shooting star is meteor. Besides very large objects like stars, planets and moons, space has lots of little objects. These can be rocks in space left over from old planets.

    These objects can even be as small as dust. These objects are called meteorites(陨石).

    When a meteorite gets close to the earth, it gets pulled towards the earth by gravity. Earth is surrounded by atmosphere. Atmosphere is made up of air and clouds. A meteorite blows up in the earth's atmosphere. This makes the short bright moving light in the night sky. A meteorite thus turns into a meteor.

    On July 1, 2019, Shanghai began the waste sorting programme. There are four kinds of waste: wet waste, dry waste, dangerous waste and recyclable waste. Under the new rules, people must put their waste in the right place. Or they will be fined more than 50 yuan and less than 200 yuan.

    Sorting waste is very important. By doing so, we can take out non-degradable(不可降解的)waste and save resources(资源)In return, we can get a better environment.  ▲   Luckily. Internet companies like Wechat, Baidu and Alipay made apps to help.

    How do we use the apps? Just open one waste-sorting app and write down the keyword. Then the app will tell us the answer and why, Alipay says its waste-sorting app got one million users in just three days and the number is still growing. They are working on the app and people may use it by taking photos in the future.

    The waste-sorting programme is the talk of the whole country now. And another 21. 3 billion yuan will be used on the programme in 46 cities by the end of 2020.
