    Judge Frank Caprio is a famous person in the city of Providence, Rhode Island. And, he is starting to get noticed around the world, too. He is an 80-year-old judge in the capital city of Rhode Island, the smallest state in the U. S.. One of his jobs is to take charge of traffic court. That involves talking to people who have gotten traffic tickets for going though red lights or parking illegally. They go to traffic court to question the tickets. Caprio hears what they have to say. Then, he decides whether or not the ticket is legal.

Caprio recently heard the case of a young man who was driving his mother's car. He went through a light after it turned red. After he spoke with the high school student, Caprio decided to let him off with a warning—if he promised to go to college and graduate.

    Another video from the Providence traffic court came out earlier this week. It showed a woman speaking with Judge Caprio about a parking ticket. She went to traffic court after getting a ticket for parking in an area that only permitted parking after 10 a. m. . The ticket was written at 9:59 a. m. . The woman said the clock in her car showed 10 a. m., so she thought it would be OK. After some conversation, the judge decided to dismiss the ticket.

    But Caprio did tell her, “You violated the city laws.” He held up a large book of rules. He smiled and the woman laughed. He said: “Our parking enforcement officers are second to none in the country!” After talking with the court officer, he said “I think 9:59 is close enough. Matter is dismissed.”

    The video was viewed over 1 million times in just two days. One person wrote of the video: “This is so cute. What a great judge. LOVE THIS.” Others wondered if the video was real, because it seemed so funny. But, there actually are judges out there like Frank Caprio. He is as real as they come.

    A new study suggests a simple getting-to-know-you exercise might improve classroom relationships. The teacher-student relationship affects every aspect of the educational experience. When students don't feel safe and respected by their teacher, they are less likely to devote themselves to their education. And when teacher feel distanced from their students, it is nearly impossible to walk into the classroom each day actively, let alone encourage motivation or investment in students.

    Hunter Gehlbach, a professor, explained that his research is primarily concerned with social perspectivetaking(换位思考), or the ability to understand what drives the people around us. As he explained, "My focus is classrooms and social perspective-taking--figuring out the thoughts and feelings of others seems important. We want teachers to be able to engage in this process and figure out the thought process of students as much as possible, in order to understand where and why they are making mistakes."

    Gehlbach and his colleagues gave 315 students and 25 teachers a "getting-to-know-you" survey of 30 items at the beginning of a school year. The researchers matched similarities between the teacher and the student, and then showed those similarities to the teachers and students. Five weeks later, the researchers returned to start a more indepth survey of both students and teachers, and to measure their opinions of their relationships and the classroom experience as a whole. The second survey showed that when teachers and students know they have five things in common, relationships and educational outcomes both improve.

    Gehlbach explained that the similarities he and his colleagues established were not based on personal information, but on shared preferences. Gehlbach explained: one of the biggest surprises in reading the similarity research was how little some of the similarities were that caused positive feelings towards others.

    Though Gehlbach's study has limitations, he is encouraged by the results and eager to explore the phenomenon further.

    Franz Boas was born in Minden, Germany, in 1858. After studying at the Universities of Heidelberg, Bonn, and Kiel, he received a doctor's degree in physics from the University of Kiel in 1881. His first fieldwork experience was among the Eskimo in Baffinland, Canada, in 1883-1884. In 1886, on his way back from a visit to the Kwakiutl Indians of British Columbia, Canada, he stopped in New York and decided to settle.

    Boas's first teaching position in America was at the newly founded Clark University in 1888. Eleven years later, he became professor of anthropology(人类学) at Columbia University. From 1896 to 1905 he was also curator(馆长) of anthropology at the American Museum of Natural History in NY. There he organized and took part in the Jesup North Pacific Expedition of 1902, which suggested the possibility of a strong relationship between northern Asian and northwestern Native American cultures. After guiding the Columbia Anthropology Department for 41 years, Boas became Professor Emeritus(荣誉退休教授) in 1937.

    Boas's anthropological studies have become classics in the field. He showed the necessity of studying a culture in all its aspects, including art, history, dance, language as well as the characteristics of the people. He pointed out that the differences in peoples were the results of historical, social and geographic conditions and all populations had complete and equally developed culture. He argued that no truly pure race exists, and that no race is superior to any other.

    In 1911 Boas published the Mind of Primitive Man, a series of lectures on culture and race. In the 1930s the Nazis in Germany burned the book. Boas revised the book in 1937 and put his anthropological ideas about racism into popular magazine articles. In 1942, Boas died, having founded anthropology as a recognized social science.

It is not news that the squid can rapidly change the color of their skin-making different patterns for communication something other squid species are also known to do.

Bot it is totally dark where the Humboldt squid live, more than one thousand feet below the ocean surface. So their pattern is invisible. Instead, a new study suggests that they create backlighting for the patterns by making their bodies glow, like the screen of an ereader.

"Right now, what blows my mind in there's probably squid talking to each other in the deep ocean and they're probably sharing all sorts of cool information." said Ben Burford, a graduate student at Stanford University.

Burford and his fallow researchers studied deep-water recordings made by remotely operated vehicles off the California coast. They found the squid make around 30 different patterns, some of which are only used around other squid, suggesting they're used for communication, The squid also appear to reorder the patterns, almost like words in a sentence.

"That's really exciting because then you can say a whole lot more based on their arrangement," Burford said. "So, they could for instance say, hey, that fish over there is mine, and I'm the ruling squid."

The findings could change the way scientists think about bioluminescence (生物荧光), which is used by many deep-sea animals to attract prey or a mate.

"We generally think of deep: sea stuff as having very simple displays because it's a low-light environment," said Mike Vecchione, a zoologist from the National Museum of Natural Museum of Natural History. "This turns some of our ideas about bioluminescence almost around upside down."

The deep ocean is a challenging place to study, so Vecchione said there may be much more complexity to discover.
