    What is the easiest way to stay warm in the super cold?. At least that is what Santa Claus told me.

    During Christmas, Dennis and I went to Finland. We brought back some tips for keeping warm in a cold temperature.

    ⒈There layers(层)work wonders.

    Start with the base layer, which sits right on your skin: choose something that can absorb sweatA sweater is a good choice. The most important layer is the outer clothes, which should be waterproof(防水的)and windproof.

    ⒉.

    You lose heat from every millimeter of uncovered skin, which was the biggest lesson I learned on this trip. My whole body was well covered. But I missed one sport: my face. So it often felt like the wind was going to blow my nose off.

    ⒊Exercise, don't just stand still.

    When it's cold, exercising may be the last thing you feel like doing, but be smart.and you will feel the difference. When we first got to Finland, we were freezing. But after a couple of minutes jumping around, we felt less cold.

    ⒋If you have a heater

    You may want to turn it all the way up, but it's best to keep it at between 18 and 20 degreesbut not create a huge difference between inside and outside.

A. Grow a crazy beard.

B. The key is what your layer is

C. Cover every bit of your skin

D. That will keep you comfortable

E. Take a walk, faster than your normal speed

F. Don't forget to keep your hands and feet warm, too

G. The middle layer keeps your body heat from getting away

    Recently some American scientists have given a useful piece of advice to people in industrialized nations.They say people should eat more of the same kind of food eaten by humans living more than 10,000 years ago.{#blank#}1{#/blank#}

    The scientists say that the human life has changed greatly.Our bodies have not been able to deal with these changes in lifestyle and this had led to new kinds of sicknesses.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}So they are called "diseases of civilization".Many cancers and diseases of the blood system are examples of such diseases.

    Scientists noted that people in both the Old Stone Age and the New Stone Age enjoyed very little alcohol or tobacco, probably none.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} However, a change in food is one of the main differences between life in ancient times and that of today.

 Stone Age people hunted wild animals for their meat, which had much less fat than domestic ones.They ate a lot of fresh wild vegetables and fruits.They did not have milk or any other dairy products, and they made very little use of grains.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} We eat six times more salt than our ancestors.We eat more sugar.We eat twice as much fat but only one third as much protein and much less vitamin C.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#} But scientists say that we would be much healthier if we eat much the same way the ancient people did, cutting the amount of fatty, salty and sweet food.

 A.Modern people used to suffer from "diseases of civilization".

 B.People today probably don't want to live like our ancestors.

 C.These new sicknesses were not known in ancient times.

 D.Ancient people also got lots of physical exercise.

 E.In that case, they would live much healthier.

Advice for High School Students

    As a person who is graduating from high school very soon, I have some suggestions for students in high school or students who are soon going to be high school students.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} I am sure others can benefit from reading them and will not make similar mistakes like me.

    {#blank#}2{#/blank#} Do not value first impression highly. Don't dismiss a person or an idea too early just because you immediately get a bad impression. You will miss many opportunities because of that.

    Although something seems bad at the first impression, it does not mean it is bad all the time. Try to give everything a fair chance.

    Don't try to please everybody. There is no way you can please everybody or get everybody to agree with you.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} It is a huge waste of time.

    Have respect for authority. No matter how much you may dislike them, just remember that teachers and parents care about you and they are only doing their jobs.{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Don't argue with them and just obey them.

    Realize a high school is not the real world. The real world isn't a closed environment. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} What is rewarded in high school such as popularity and agreement is different from what is rewarded in the real world. If high school isn't working out for you, you may find yourself better at handling the real world.

A. Do not be too quick to judge.

B. So just learn to say the word “No” a lot.

C. Listen to their advice and consider it carefully.

D. Many of these are based on regrets that I have.

E. Bad habits are hard to break and remain with you for a long time.

F. Don't spend any effort trying to please others who will never like you.

G. It is a free society where people accept responsibility for their actions.

任务型阅读

    Homework is a major part of going to school: It's your teachers' way of evaluating(评价) how much you understand of what's going on in class.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} Luckily, you can do a few things to make homework less work.

    Be sure you understand the homework.

    Write your homework down in your notebook or day planner if you need to.{#blank#}2{#/blank#}It's much easier to take a minute to ask the teacher during or after class than to struggle to remember later that night!

    Use any extra time in school.

    Many schools have study halls that are specifically designed to allow students to study. It's tempting(诱惑) to hang out with friends during study periods or unstructured(松散的) time.{#blank#}3{#/blank#}

    Take a break.

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} So take some breaks while doing your homework. Sitting for too long without stretching or relaxing will make you less productive than if you stop every so often. Taking a 15 minute break every hour is a good idea for most people.

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    If you don't finish your homework during school, think about how much you have left and what else is going on that day, and then budget your time. Most high school students have between 1 and 3 hours of homework a night. If it's a heavy homework day and you've got an assignment in every subject, you'll need to devote more time to homework. It's a good idea to come up with some kind of homework schedule, especially if you are involved in sports or activities or have an after school job.

A. Make a homework schedule.

B. Settle down to do homework.

C. And it helps digest important concepts.

D. Most people's attention spans (跨度) aren't very long.

E. Don't be afraid to ask questions about what's unknown.

F. Once your homework is done, you can check over it if you have extra time.

G. But the more work you can get done in school, the less you'll have to do that night.

    Does meeting new people make you nervous(紧张的)? If so, you're not alone. {#blank#}1{#/blank#}Here are some simple choices.

    Look your best

    Obviously the way that you look like decides people's impression (印象) of you. But you don't need to look like a model to make a good impression. You just need to take care of yourself. Make sure your clothes are clean, tidy and right for the situation. It is said that blue or black are best for job interviews. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} They change how people see you.

    Stand tall

    {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Standing up straight makes you look and feel confident. When you get close to someone, smile to show you're friendly and interested. Then greet them with a firm handshake.

    Speak up

    Speak loudly and clearly enough that people can hear you. If you don't know what to say, ask questions. Most people enjoy talking about themselves. Listening is just as important as talking. When people are talking, pay attention to what they're saying rather than planning what you'll say next. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} .

    {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    Most importantly, show people you care. Your concern for them will be clear if you smile and listen carefully. Respect other people's time, too. Don't keep them waiting because you arrive late or keep using your cellphone instead of talking to them. Everyone you meet, whether they're a businessperson, a reporter or a bus driver, is important.

A. Don't forget little things like brushing your teeth and washing your hair.

B. Never be late

C. But meeting new people isn't as hard as you might think.

D. Respect people

E. You are stubborn, and others' opinions can't change who you are.

F. The way you stand, sit and move tells others a lot about you.

G. If you're not sure what they mean, ask!

    I didn't just read a book in print, on an e-reader or even on a mobile phone. Instead, I read a book on dozens of devices. I was not trying to set a Guinness World Record. I wanted to answer a question I often hear: {#blank#}1{#/blank#}? So I set out to try them all, reading a chapter on each: the Amazon Kindle, the first and second generation Apple iPads and mobile phones. To be fair, I also read a chapter in that old-fashioned; form—a print book.

    The book I chose was The Alienist. For the first chapter, I turned to an Amazon Kindle. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}. The kinder is light. Its six-inch screen is the perfect size for reading, and reading on its black-and-white-E-Ink display doesn't harm your eyes. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}, and on average you charge the device only once a month. My only complaint with the Kindle design was the placement of the keyboard at the bottom of the device.

    Despite the small screen on a mobile phone, I found reading on one to be simple and satisfactory. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}, but all of the phones on which I read chapters felt somewhat similar.

    If I had wanted to, I could have bought my book through dozens of e-book apps in the Apple App Store. Most are free and offer access to thousands of free e-books or paid versions. Both iPads 1&2 offer an immersive(身临其境的)reading experience. I found myself jumping back and forth between my book and the web, looking up old facts and pictures of New York City. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}.

    For the last chapters of the book, I read the print one, which is still my favourite choice.

    Since we are comparing devices. So I guess I need to choose one. In the end it might come down to Kindle. But if money is tight, go for print. My used print book cost only $4 from Amazon.

A. Battery life is outstanding

B. Which e-reader is the best for reading books

C. Shopping on Amazon for the Kindle is simple

D. Should students make use of the devices to read

E. No wonder a lot of readers also speak highly of it

F. Reading on the Amazon Kindle is a joy in many aspects

G. The brightness and size of the mobile phone's screen did vary

    Communicating with students is good advice for teachers. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Teachers can share details about themselves or invite children to talk about what they did over the holiday.

    * Don't schedule too many activities for your children

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Instead, help them set clear goals and keep schedules organized. If someone in the family has a learning style close to that of the student, that person could help because they have something in common.

    * {#blank#}5{#/blank#}

    Everyone needs a break from work. Family meals and outings can help everyone relax. A family game night or walk in a park together can give parents and children a chance to have fun as a family. If a student has hours of homework to complete, taking several 10-minute breaks can reduce stress.

B. Have fun with family.

C. In this way, students can become more familiar with the environment.
