It was Mother's Day. John was so busy with his work that he couldn't go back home. When he walked by a flower shop in the evening, an idea came to his mind. “I'll send Mum some roses (玫瑰).”
   While John was picking his flowers, a young man went inside. “How many roses can I get for only five dollars, Madam?” he asked. The shop assistant told him that roses were as expensive as forty dollars a dozen (一打). Maybe he would be happy with carnations(康乃馨). She told him they were a lot cheaper than roses.
   “No, I have to have red roses," he said, "My mum was badly ill last year and I didn't get to spend much time with her. Now I want to get something special, it has to be roses, as the rose is her favorite.”
   After hearing this, John said he would pay the rest of the money for the young man. Moved by both of them, the shop assistant said, “Well, lovely young men, thirty dollars a dozen, only for you two." Taking the roses, the young man almost jumped into the air. He thanked John, and ran out of the shop. It was well worth twenty-five dollars John paid to see the exciting moment. Then John paid for his dozen of roses and told the shop assistant to send them to his mother.
   As he walked out, he felt nice. Suddenly he saw the young man crossing the street and going into a park. But soon he realized it was not a park but a cemetery (墓地). Crying, the young man carefully laid the roses, "Mum, oh, Mum, why didn't I tell you how much I loved you? God, please help me find my mum and tell her I love her.”
   Seeing this, John turned and quickly walked back to the shop. He would take the flowers home himself.

    Edward Estlin Cummings (E. E. Cummings) was a poet famous for writing his poems with capital (大写的) letters in the words. He also used "i" instead of "I" to refer to himself in the poems.

    Edward was born on 14 October, 1894 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Young Edward's mother Rebecca loved to spend time with her children. She taught young Edward how to write poems. Edward's father was also named Edward. He was a great scholar (学者) and taught his son to learn by using his hands as well as his mind.

    Edward was a very smart boy. He was only 12 when he became a freshman in high school. He graduated (毕业) from Harvard in 1915. During World War Ⅰ, he joined the army and was sent to France. Edward and his friend from Harvard were caught because people thought they were sent by the German army. They were kept in one room. Their life was boring and full of fear. Edward therefore wrote his first book The Enormous Room and published it in 1922.

    Edward was a poet that made his own rules in poetry. He was one of the most popular poets of the 20th century.

    One day, a mouse saw a mousetrap(老鼠夹)in the farmer's house. He said to his friends on the farm, "There is a mousetrap in the house!"

    The chicken said," There is no need for me to worry about it."

    The pig said," It has nothing to do with me!"

    The cow said, "It sounds like you have a problem."

    The mouse was sad, because no one cared about his problem or would help him.

    One night, a snake bit(咬)the farmer's wife. Soon the wife caught a fever. The farmer decided to kill the chicken and made chicken soup for his wife.

    Later, the wife got sicker and her friends came to visit her. The farmer killed the pig to feed them.

    In the end, the farmer's wife died. Many people came to her funeral (葬礼), so the farmer killed the cow to feed all of them.

    Let's remember that when any one is in trouble, we are all at risk(有危险).
