Father's Day has a very short history. It was started because there was a Mother's Day, and just because some Americans thought that if we had a Mother's Day, we should also have a Father's Day. Father's Day has become important in North America. And shopkeepers (店主) found it was a good way to get people to buy presents for their fathers, presents from their shops.

    By the way, very few countries have a Father's Day, though some have Children's Day, or a special day for boys and another for girls. More and more countries are having Mother's Day, so maybe Father's Day will also become popular before too long. Now, what do people in North America do on Father's Day? The newspapers, radios, and TV tell children what they should do—buy a Father's Day present for your father. They even tell a wife to buy a Father's Day present—not for her father but for her husband, even if he is a not yet a father. And they tell grandchildren to buy a Father's Day present for their grandfathers.

    The important thing to remember about Father's Day is that American children can show their love to their fathers in a more open way.

It is useful to learn how to make small talk. It is an important social skill. It helps to make people feel{#blank#}1{#/blank#} （放松的） and start a conversation when they meet for the{#blank#}2{#/blank#}（第一） time. 

The topics for small talk are different in different countries. But usually the topics are general rather than personal. In the UK, people sometimes talk about the {#blank#}3{#/blank#} （天气） when they make a small talk"It's a nice day, isn't it？" This {#blank#}4{#/blank#}（种类） of questions helps you begin a conversation because they are general questions that anyone can {#blank#}5{#/blank#} （答复）to. Next time when you want to make small talk, turn a statement to a question. You are sure to get answer and start a conversation. 

You probably know about Single's Day (Nov. 11th) in China, when people stay up very late to shop online. Well, the US has something similar called Black Friday. It is the {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Friday in November and also the start of the shopping season. So people start to think about what kind of presents to buy for their families and friends, such as musical {#blank#}2{#/blank#}, televisions, and computers. People can buy them at the very low prices on this day {#blank#}3{#/blank#} they are lucky enough. A lot of shopping on Black Friday is like a war at actual shops. Last year, some people waited in line for hours {#blank#}4{#/blank#} midnight and then rushed in as soon as the doors opened. Some even got hurt when people went through the doors, but they didn't {#blank#}5{#/blank#}. This year, a few stores will start sales even earlier. By doing this, the stores hope to get more shoppers and stay ahead of the competition. 

The Lantern Festival is a traditional festival in China when people light lanterns, set off fireworks, eat yuanxiao and enjoy family time. But do you know how this festival started?

In the Han Dynasty, there was a man named Dongfang Shuo who worked for the Emperor Wu of Han. One day, Dongfang met a crying maid(哭泣的宫女) named Yuanxiao in the emperor's garden. He asked her what happened. And the maid said she was sad because she couldn't see her family.

Dongfang promised to help Yuanxiao. He left the garden and went to the street. He started telling people that a big fire would happen on the 15th day of the first lunar month. It was the order of the Jade Emperor. Word spread quickly and people in the city were scared.

The Emperor Wu of Han heard of it and asked Dongfang for advice. Dongfang advised him to let Yuanxiao make glutinous rice(糯米) balls for the God of Fire to make him happy. He also advised everyone in the city to put up red lanterns and set off fireworks to create an illusion that the city was on fire. Seeing this, the Jade Emperor would not set fire.

On the special day, the city was full of people and lanterns Yuanxiao's parents were able to meet up with their daughter in the crowd. The city was safe, and the Emperor Wu of Han was happy. He ordered that every year on this day, people should make glutinous rice balls and hang lanterns.

From then on, the 15th day of the first lunar month has been called the Lantern Festival or Yuanxiao Jie. Since Yuanxiao cooked the best glutinous rice balls, people call the food yuanxiao or tangyuan.

Some strangers (陌生人) look very {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (friend), but never talk to them and never take gifts from them. If you do, you'll be {#blank#}6{#/blank#}great danger.

If you get {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (lose) in a place, be careful of whom you ask for help. Ask a policeman or someone with {#blank#}8{#/blank#} child for help.
