Every individual is a member of a group called the community, and it is the duty of every citizen {#blank#}1{#/blank#} ask what he can do for his community. A good citizen {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(相信) that he should serve the community and not the community serve h{#blank#}3{#/blank#}. As students, there are many ways in {#blank#}4{#/blank#} you can serve the community. Above all, however, you have to acquire a certain amount of skill and experience b{#blank#}5{#/blank#} you can be of service to others. Your school has lots of{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(活动) which prepare you {#blank#}7{#/blank#} good citizenship. Many school societies train students to become good citizens who later p{#blank#}8{#/blank#} in volunteer work and serve the public in t{#blank#}9{#/blank#} of need. If you serve your community, you will grow {#blank#}10{#/blank#} to be a good citizen with a strong sense of responsibility.

    On receiving my learner's permit a couple of months ago ,I started driving lessons straight away. However, it wasn't until two days ago{#blank#}1{#/blank#}Dad finally allowed me to drive on the motorway. Our destination was Orewa,{#blank#}2{#/blank#}seaside town.

    That morning I made sure I had enough to drink and went to the toilet about three times{#blank#}3{#/blank#}we left. I thought l was totally prepared{#blank#}4{#/blank#}the journey, but nothing could have prepared me for my family's complaints.

    “Relax! Don't hold the steering wheel so{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(tight)." called a nervous voice from the backseat.

    "Speed up. 70km/h isn't fast enough. You are holding up the traffic," another voice ordered from the seat next to{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(1).

    How{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(annoy)! To content them ,I{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(step) hard on the accelerator(加速器), and within a second, an angry voice began to yell again.

    “Stop!  Slow down!  Are you crazy? Did I tell you to go above l00km/h'?"

Finally I drove into the city, where the speed limit was only 50km/h.

    My family seemed relieved and stopped{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(tell) me what to do. On our way home, the journey was much{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(easy) than before as everyone else fell fast asleep. So ,I just took my time and enjoyed the drive.

Pam: So how are you enjoying{#blank#}1{#/blank#} (live) in the countryside?

Jane: Oh, it's very nice. The house is much bigger than the flat we had in London and one of {#blank#}2{#/blank#} best things is being able to walk out of the back door into {#blank#}3{#/blank#} own garden.

Pam: Mm, that must be lovely. So all in all, it's much better than London, isn't it?

Jane: Well, I'm not sure I would say that. It's certainly less polluted here {#blank#}4{#/blank#} I suppose it's less stressful and that must be good for me. But it's just so much quieter here and that takes some time to get {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (use) to.

Pam: But it's so much busier on the streets here in London. It must be nice to walk around somewhere that is much less crowded.

Jane: Well, sometimes it is. Anyway,{#blank#}6{#/blank#} least I'm coming up to London next weekend. I'm more excited about that than I am about anything {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(happen) round here.

Pam: Oh dear, you seem to be thinking that you haven't made the best {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (decide)

Jane: Well, perhaps I'll feel more settled here after a few months.

Pam: Yes,{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (probable). I personally think you're lucky to be where you are. When I {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(come) to visit you, I thought it was one of the most beautiful places I'd ever seen.

    Few people would even think of beginning a new job at the age of 76, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} one of America's most famous artists did just that. Anna Mary Robertson, better known as "Grandma Moses"（摩西奶奶）, turned to painting {#blank#}2{#/blank#}she was too old to work on her farm. Grandma Moses was crazy about {#blank#}3{#/blank#} （paint） soon after she picked it up and worked hard at it. She painted {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(care) and her work were nice. She first painted only to please {#blank#}5{#/blank#}（her）, and then began to sell her works {#blank#}6{#/blank#} little money. In 1993, a collector（收藏家）,Louis  Caldor happened to see several of Grandma Moses' works hanging in a shop.

    Caldor held a show to introduce the works of Grandma Moses to other {#blank#}9{#/blank#}（artist）. Grandma Moses who was world-famous, died {#blank#}10{#/blank#}December 13, 1961, at the age of 101.

    Polar bears are suffering in a {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (warm) world than ever before. Polar bears live in environments too cold for most animals. During much of the year, they live and hunt on the{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (freeze) Arctic sea ice. Nature has prepared them for the cold conditions but nothing has prepared the bears for the danger that {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (threat) the only home they know. The scientists have drawn a {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (conclude) that the polar bears' world is melting. Studies show that the polar ice has reduced{#blank#}5{#/blank#}9.8% every 10 years since 1978. Now about 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears live in the Arctic. Polar bears depend on the sea ice for their {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (survive). "The sea ice is more than just this platform that the bears walk over." As Andrew Derocher, a scientist who studies North American polar bear populations puts {#blank#}7{#/blank#}, "Only if polar ice melts quite slowly {#blank#}8{#/blank#}they survive on the earth." Some melting and refreezing of the polar ice is natural. {#blank#}9{#/blank#} in a warmer world, these cycles speed up, and bears have less time to hunt. Normally, they have three months in the spring when they gain more weight. The extra fat is used later, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} the bears are not actively hunting.

    Keeping a diary in English is one of the {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (effect) ways to improve our English writing ability. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (compare) with other forms of writing, it is shorter and takes {#blank#}3{#/blank#} time. It can help us to develop the habit of thinking in English. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} we insist in this practice, gradually we'll learn how to express {#blank#}5{#/blank#}in English.     As far as I {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(concern), my suggestion is that we should always have a notebook and a Chinese-English dictionary within easy reach. We can also turn to our English teacher for help, if necessary. In short, I believe that it is {#blank#}9{#/blank#} great use to keep a diary in English for {#blank#}10{#/blank#} development of our writing skills.
