Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people 4 to give money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man came to see 5 things were. The boy recognized his footsteps （认出他的脚步声）and asked, “Were you the one who 6 my sign this morning? What did you write?”

    Mr. Black was over fifty years old. He sometimes made some mistakes in his work, and he lost his work. So he had 1 time every day to do something. Then he often met his old friends under a big tree. They had a drink there and 2 anything they liked.

    One day, some old men were sitting together again and talking about young people in this world. They all agreed that the old people were 3 than young people. Then one of the old 4 said that young men were stronger than old men.

    People can hardly believe that Fred Carey is one of the best students in his class. He1a trouble maker and often drove his teachers mad.

    Fred's father died when he was just a 2 boy. Life became 3for him. His mother had to work to pay for his education. As a result, she was seldom at home. She tried to look4him well, but Fred caused a lot of problems for himself and his family. He had no 5 in studying and often got into trouble with the police. Luckily, his mother was very patient and didn't give up 6him. 7 the end, she made a difficult decision 8 him to a boy's boarding school. Fred hated it at first and caused even9 trouble. He told his teacher he wanted to leave the school. Even the teacher agreed that Fred was wasting his time.

She also told me that 11 my father was no longer with us, he was watching me and would always be proud of everything 12I had done. That's the time when I decided to change. I realized that since my father died, I had been afraid of being alone, and had tried to make my mother 13 more about me.

    Now Fred has really changed. He has been working hard. How was he able to change? His mother's love helped him to feel 14about himself, and as Fred himself says, "15 very important for parents to be there for their children."

    It was 3:43. Thunder was crashing and the rain was pouring. Suddenly my father rushed into my room." Adam! Adam! Get up! We're flooding!" he shouted and shook me by the shoulders. That woke 1  up! I ran downstairs to the basement. It was like a swimming pool. My mother and I immediately started to pick up things and take them upstairs. I had no 2  on, so my feet were quite freezing.

    Things got worse every minute. Within the next hour, we had moved everything that we could to the first floor. The computer, big-screen television and heavy boxes 3  with our most valuable things were taken to safety. 4  , our piano, sofa, washing machine and water heater were all still down there—being 5 .There was nothing we could do.

    That was the hardest part. Knowing that your home is being destroyed is bad enough, but 6 that you can't do anything to stop it feels even worse.

    Water had come in our front door. Rescue 8  were floating in our streets. Mother told me to pack an overnight bag of clothes and valuables and get ready to leave.

    When it was 9  safe to walk outside, all the people in the neighborhood 10  at the street corner. People became friends, and friends became like family. People 11  each other. We learned later that the National Weather Service had declared the storm a flash flood.

I really have 12  something from this flood. I've learned what destruction is. I have learned what 13  means. I know in the future, when I watch people's lives affected by natural disasters, I can understand them. I will show great pity on them and I will do what I can to help them.

    Do you know "One Belt, One Road"? We also call it the Modern Silk Road. And Zhang Qian was an early traveller of the Ancient Silk Road. He was probably the first1to bring back good information about the central Asian lands to China.

    In 139 BC, Han Wudi sent Zhang Qian to the Yue-zhi people to ask for their2against the Xiongnu people who often infringed(侵犯) them.3, on the way to the Western Regions, he was caught by the Xiongnu people. Zhang had to stay with them4about 10 years before he got away. When Zhang finally5the Yue -zhi people in the North India, he was6to find that they didn't want to fight against the Xiongnu people.

    On7return journey, Zhang Qian and his men were8again. It was not until 125 BC that they returned to China.9Zhang didn't finish his job, he learned a lot about the places, people, customs and cultures of the 36 kingdoms(王国) in the Western Regions.

    Later Han Wudi sent Zhang to West again. Zhang's journey to the West helped10international trade, especially in silk, between China and the West, That's the Ancient Silk Road.
