Switzerland is famous{#blank#}1{#/blank#}its watches. However, this country didn't invent the watch. It was the British who did it. Here is a story of how the watch{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (bring) to Switzerland.

    Many years ago,{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Englishman traveled to Italy and on his way he stopped in a small town{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(call) Geneva in Switzerland. This Englishman traveled in a carriage(马车) inside which there was a carriage watch. This was the{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(early) kind of watch. A native shop assistant(售货员) happened to see the watch. He wondered what it was{#blank#}6{#/blank#}asked the Englishman about it. “It is a carriage watch.” answered the man. “This machine can tell the time but now {#blank#}7{#/blank#} isn't working.” At once the shop assistant offered to try repairing it. So the {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (travel) handed him the watch. The man was very clever. It was easy for him {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (repair) it. He even remembered{#blank#}10{#/blank#} it was made. And he made a watch of exactly the same type.

    My first impression of Mrs. Li, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} kind and patient teacher，was that she was nervous and shy. Mrs. Chen，almost 60，is very strict. She's also very serious and doesn't smile much.     As we all know, the Great Wall of China is one of the greatest {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (sight) in the world—the longest wall in the world ,which {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (consider) the symbol of China and the wisdom of Chinese people.

    At the beginning, written Chinese was a picture-based language. It dates back several thousand years to the use of animal bones and shells on which symbols {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (carve) by ancient Chinese people. Some of the ancient symbols can still be seen in today's hanzi.

    By the Shang Dynasty, these symbols {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (become) a well-developed writing system. That writing system was {#blank#}6{#/blank#} great importance in uniting the Chinese people and culture. Even today, no matter where Chinese people live or {#blank#}7{#/blank#} dialect they speak, they can all still communicate {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (easy) in writing.

    Written Chinese has also become an important means by {#blank#}9{#/blank#} China's present is connected with its past. People in modem times can read the classic {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (work) which were written by Chinese in ancient times. The high regard for the Chinese writing system can be seen in the development of Chinese characters as an art form, known as Chinese calligraphy, which has become an important part of Chinese culture.
