This was my grandmother's first Christmas without grandfather. When we reached her house, it did seem a little 1 without grandfather.

    Grandfather had always said the Christmas 2 was the most important. So we set to work assembling (组装) the beautiful 3 tree that was stored in grandfather's closet (储藏柜). After we finished, we stepped back to 4 our work. It looked wonderful. But something was 5.

    "From who?"There was 16 in my grandmother's voice.

    "I found that 17 in the closet when we got the tree down, "Mother explained.

    I want to share a moving story with you. A friend, who started up and ran her own youth 1 group, lost her husband because of cancer 2 years ago. Almost after he 2 she found out that she had3too. She is still going strong and her 4is working well for now. She always has a smile and kind words for everyone, just as she usually did during the5 days.

    One of the 6 I have had over the years is to -take photographs7 candid(偷拍的) shots of people laughing and smiling. I have a great headshot of the fried and her husband, from about a year or 2 before he died. They 8have the loveliest smiles in the photo. An idea came into my mind when I 9the photo. So I ordered a(n)10 of it and put it into a nice frame for her. I gave it to her last night at a meeting of the theater group. I didn't know if she would like it, so I was very 11 of how it might go.12 there were floods of tears from her and a few other friends, we all had lots of hags and 13 It was a friendly and warm 14that I hadn't had for many years.

    My friend said, “It is one of the nicest 15 I have of him and, though I normally16pictures of myself, I love this one.” She couldn't17 me enough and was really shocked that I had done such a(n)18 thing for her. I felt it was only a 19 effort on my part, but it20 an amazing result.

    On my way back home I was stopped at a traffic light by some people who asked for help. A woman1to give way to an ambulance, but drove her car over stony obstacles（障碍）that 2 the bike line from the street, and her car 3 as a result. She couldn't move the car in any direction without 4 it. A couple of people tried to lift the car back but the obstacles were too 5. Seeing that they couldn't do much about it, they 6 and the woman in the car tried to call for some 7.

    While watching the other people leave, I 8the woman would be on her own and I imagined how 9 that would be if I were in her shoes. After some talking, she 10 me to sit inside her car. She called for help and was 11 that it would take about 45 minutes for someone to get there.

    I tried to comfort the woman who seemed to feel 12 about causing others trouble, But 13 it wasn't too much trouble since they could 14 pass, and also there wasn't anything she could do about it anyway. We laughed and joked that all we 15 was some tea for our chat.

    Finally 16 came and helped her back on the street. She thanked me and 17 my phone number so she could return the 18, but I told her it was okay. She seemed to feel much 19when we said our goodbyes. I believe that not having to face a difficult 20 alone can make a lot of difference.

    It's amazing how one dollar can change the culture of a school.

    We have a small school. There are 1 about 30 middle school students. It can get really 2 and stressful as most of the kids get good grades and 3 to be the best they can be. It's good except that a lot of us middle school kids felt pressured.

    My friend and I, 4, set out to find a way to change the 5 . We believed doing things for others was the only way to get ourselves over our 6 about school .

    On the first day of school we 7 put a dollar folded into a heart into one of the senior's lockers with a note saying, “ Buy yourself a snack, and share 8.” We hoped to do that every day. Little did we know the 9 it would make.

    Terry Fox never thought he'd live a great life. He liked sports, but no one thought he was talented. However, Terry was 1 for one reason he had determination.

    Terry was too short for basketball, but he worked harder at it. He also practiced cross-country running 2 he didn't like it. Finally he made the 3 team and even won the Athlete of the Year Award later.

    During his first year at university, he had a pain 4 his right knee, which was so bad that he 5 stand up. He went to the doctor for 6. They showed that he had cancer. He was going to lose one of his 7 and be given an artificial one.

    Terry's family and friends all gave him support. "Knowing that all those people cared really helped me," Terry said. He decided to face it with courage and 8.

    One night Terry was 9 through an article. It was about Dick Traum, who also had an artificial leg and had 10 the New York Marathon. "If he can do it," thought Terry, "I can, too. I'll run across Canada and 11 money for cancer research. It will be a Marathon of 12!"

    Terry did just that. He began to run a little every day. It is 5,300 miles across Canada. Terry hoped to run thirty to forty miles a day so that it would 13 him six months. Most of all, he hoped to raise $1 million for cancer research. Because Terry had an artificial leg, running wasn't 14. People supported Terry. As he ran, they 15 and cheered. However, he had to give up the Marathon after 3,339 miles, with a 16 pain in his chest. He told the people before he left, "I won't 17. I just hope people will 18 to give money." And they did. Just under $25 million was given.

    Terry 19 a lot of awards all his life. He passed away on June 28, 1981, almost a year after his Marathon of Hope. He was considered a 20 in all areas of his life.

    Sudha Chandran, a classical dancer from India, had to have her right leg cut after a car accident. She was also 1 on her career road.

    Though the accident brought her bright career to a 2, she didn't give up. In the 3 months that followed, Sudha met a doctor who developed an artificial 4 made from rubber filled with sponge (海绵). So 5 she wanted to go back to 6 after she had been fitted with an artificial leg. Sudha knew that she believed in 7 and could realize her dream, and 8 she began her courageous journey back to the world of dancing — 9 to balance, bend, stretch, walk, turn, twist and twirl.
