"Early to bed, early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy and wise." This is an old English saying. It means that we must go to bed early in the evening and1 in the morning.

The body must have enough sleep. If we don't go to bed early, we can't have enough sleep. Then we can't2 or do our work properly(正常地). We will not be clever or live a comfortable life. We must sleep at night when it is dark. When daylight comes, we must get up. This is the time for3. It means doing things with the body. Walking, running, swimming, playing games are all good forms of exercise. If the body is not used, it becomes weak. Exercise keeps it4.

Exercise helps blood(血液) to move around inside the body. The brain(大脑) need blood. We think with our brains. If we keep our bodies5, and do exercise, we can think better.

A lady and her husband in usual clothes walked into the president of Harvard's outer office. "We want to see the president," the lady said softly. Looking at the usual couple, the secretary said, "He'll be busy all day."" We'll wait," the lady replied.

For hours, the secretary did nothing for them, hoping that they would finally go away. They didn't. "Maybe if they just see you for a few minutes, they'll leave," the secretary finally told the president.

The president looked down at the couple. The lady told him, "We had a son that had studied in Harvard for one year. He loved Harvard. But he was accidentally killed. And my husband and I would like to build something for him in Harvard. "Madam," the president said angrily, "we can't put up a statue for every person who attended Harvard and died."

"Oh, no," the lady explained quickly, "we mean we would give a building to Harvard." The president looked at their usual clothes, and then said, "A building! Do you know how much a building costs? It took us over seven and a half million dollars to build Harvard."

The lady turned to her husband and said quietly, "Is that all it costs to start a university?" Her husband nodded. Mr. and Mrs. Leland Stanford walked away, traveling to Palo Alto, California where they built a university with their name—a memorial(纪念)to a son that Harvard no longer cared about.

You can easily judge the character of others by how they treat those who can do nothing for them or to them.

One day, Ben was playing basketball in the living room, breaking a vase. To cover his terrible action, the frightened boy glued the pieces together and put the vase back to its place.

That evening her mother noticed the cracks (裂纹). But to her surprise, the repair work was actually very good. At dinner time, she asked her boy if he broke the vase. Fearing punishment, the boy said that a neighbor's cat jumped in from the window and knocked the vase off. His mother was quite clear that her son was lying. However, she said nothing.

Before going to bed, the boy was asked to go to the study. In the study, his mother didn't look angry. On seeing her son carefully come in, she gave him one chocolate, saying "This chocolate is a reward (奖励) for your imagination: a window-opening cat!" At that moment, the boy felt the chocolate was a hot potato. “Did mom find holes in my excuse?” he thought. “You know, all the windows were closed.” Mother continued calmly and took out two chocolates into his hand, “An award for the perfect repair.”

Now with the chocolates in hand, the boy wished the ground to open up and bury him! He told the truth. “So I have to punish you for your lie.” The mother said with a serious voice and took back his chocolates. The boy bent down his head in shame. “But your honesty should have the award—a box of chocolates.” The mother suddenly bent to kiss his cheek, speaking gently to the crying boy, “My son, honesty values more than anything.”
