An Interview with Andy Griffiths

Andy Griffiths is well known as a writer of children's books. Here are some interesting things you might not know about him.

What do you like to do after a long day of writing?

I go for long runs and bike rides beside the beach. An hour of exercise after a long day of writing gives me energy. Then I'm ready to write some more.

Do you write using a computer or by hand?

At first write the stories by hand, and then transfer (转录) them onto computer. I like to write by hand when travel. I find it very easy to lose myself in my diary when I am away from my usual activities.

What super power would you like to have?

X-ray-vision (影像) if can control it.

What is your favorite food?

I'm never happier than when I'm drinking banana milkshakes. And I love fish. But I don't like drinking fish milkshakes. They are just terrible!

What is your favorite book?

Alice in Wonderland. It has so many surprises and such silliness in it.

Do you write for adults too?

Only if I really have to. I much prefer the freedom and fun of writing for children.

What do you say to kids who say,"Why should I read?"

As Dr. Seuss says, "The more you read, the more things you will know. The more you learn, the more places you'll go."

Do you really want it? Seeing a $25 toy machine, Ben wanted it. But after thinking for a while, Ben thought it would be {#blank#}3{#/blank#}( exciting)only for one day or two.

How will you pay for it? After the first two steps, Ben found he really wanted a toy ship, but it would cost {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(he) $50. He had $22 in his pocket {#blank#}7{#/blank#} got $1.5 a week to spend.

Are there ways to make money? Ben decided to wash the downstairs windows at a dollar each.So he got $10 for himself.

Can you get it {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(cheap)? After deciding to buy it, it {#blank#}9{#/blank#}( be) necessary for you to look for less expensive ways to buy it: search for what you want on the Internet or in shops. Sometimes you can find the same thing {#blank#}10{#/blank#} a much lower price.

Chopsticks are an important tool to have meals in China.

When were chopsticks invented?

{#blank#}1{#/blank#} They were invented before Shang Dynasty. The earliest   chopsticks were made of bronze (青铜). They were 26 centimetres long and 1.1 to 1.3 centimetres wide. People used them to pick up food at that time.

Most people believe that Chinese invented chopsticks. There are many stories about the inventor of chopsticks. Someone says that Jiang Ziya, a wise man, created chopsticks. Actually, no one knows for sure. We can only say that the inventor was a clever ancient Chinese.

What shape are chopsticks?

Chopsticks have the shape of being square above and circle below. Chinese believe that the Earth is square and the sky is circle. {#blank#}3{#/blank#}

How are chopsticks used?

Many people think it's difficult to use chopsticks. {#blank#}4{#/blank#} Hold them between the thumb and other fingers. The key is to hold one piece tight and move the other to control movement and force. Remember, practice makes perfect.

Chopsticks are also one important part of Chinese culture. In China, it is polite to pick up food for the old. {#blank#}5{#/blank#} And never make your chopsticks stand straight in a rice bowl. Don't use chopsticks to hit the side of your bowl, either.

We know exercise is important（重要的）in our life. Everyone needs to exercise. Doctors say doing sports is beneficial for us. Sports can make our body strong. Children should also do some sports. It's good for them. If children often do sports, they can be stronger and taller. Doing sports is easy. Here is some advice（建议）for you.

You can walk, run or only jump. These are easy ways. Every day you walk to the classrooms and have PE class.

Don't do sports too much at a time. Try all kinds of sports and look for one, two or even three sports you like. People exercise for an hour every day have better sleep and more energy（能量）.

You can also exercise at a gym or on the sports field. In the gym, you can play basketball, play tennis or play badminton. After school, you can run or play football on the sports field. Exercise can be fun. It can make you happy.

Friends can exercise together. You can do sports with your friends at any place you like. You can also join the running club together.

As you can see, you can try different ways to do exercise. And Just do it!

 Hello, everyone! I'm Jessie. I'd like to tell you something about my school—NO. 1 Middle School! It's not big but beautiful. 

 There are four buildings in my school. The classroom building is in the middle. It's where we have classes and learn a lot of interesting things. There are ten classrooms on the first floor, eight classrooms on the second floor and two classrooms on the third floor. Next to the classroom building is the library. It's my favorite place in school because I can read all kinds of books there. I often spend my free time there, learning new things and getting lost in the stories. 

 To the right of the library is the sports field. We have PE classes and play sports there. It's a great place to have fun. I love playing basketball and volleyball with my friends. Behind the library is the art building. We have three art rooms on the first floor, and four music rooms on the second floor. I can draw pictures and play the piano there. 

 In a word, I love my school. It's a good place to learn and make friends. I'm excited to spend the next few years here!
