Droughts(干旱) are common in Kenya. Before, they came every 10 years, but now they seem to be hitting us more often and for a longer time.

We gave the droughts names "longoza" was the drought when many animals died; there  was the drought of the "planes" because food was dropped from the air by planes; and one particularly bad drought was called "man who dies with his money in his fist(拳头)", because, even if there was money, there was simply no food to buy.

I was born in 1951 in Machakos. From what my mother tells me, when I was 7, there was a serious drought . I clearly remember the terrible weather and the hunger. I can't tell you how many times I went to bed without eating. "I slept like that," is how we described it. I can't count the number of days when "I slept like that," or describe the feeling of going to sleep hungry, knowing I'd wake up and there would still be no food for breakfast.

My father would leave early in the morning carrying a little basket to ask for food on credit(赊欠). Each night he would return home around 10:00 pm. My mother would try to encourage me by telling me to keep the water in our pot boiling so that when my father arrived we could quickly cook any food he brought in the already prepared water. I would keep the fire burning and the water boiling, along with the hopes that we would eat that night. But my father would arrive frustrated and empty-handed. And I would sleep like that.

(4)、The sentence "I slept like that" means " ___________."
A、I was disappointed when my father came back empty-handed B、I felt sorry because m y family got hungry again C、I went to sleep with no food for breakfast D、I went to bed with nothing to eat

Everyone faces challenges in their life, but some are more important than others. Daniel Kish had serious problems with his eyes when he was born. And doctors took away both of his eyes before he was fourteen months old.

Soon after, however, he started to do an amazing thing. He started to make clicking(咔嗒) sounds with his tongue(舌头) to help him move around. Much like a bat(蝙蝠), he now moves about using sonar(声呐). He is so good at it that he can ride a bicycle in traffic. He and his group, World Access for the Blind, teach others how to use sonar. In this interview with National Geographic, Kish explains how the process works.

    How does sonar work?

"When I make a clicking sound, it makes sound waves. These waves reflect(反射) off surfaces all around and return to my ears. My brain then processes the sounds into images(图像). It's like having a conversation with the environment

When you click, what do you see in your mind?

"Each click is like a camera flash. I make a 3D image of the things around me for hundreds of feet in every direction

What is it like riding a bike using sonar?

"It's exciting and enjoyable but requires a lot of focus. I click up to two times per second, much more than I usually do."

Is it dangerous to move around the world in this way?

"Much of the world lives in fear of things that we mostly imagine. I have a habit of climbing anything and everything, but I never broke a bone (骨头) as a kid."

How challenging is it to teach people to use sonar?

"Many students are surprised how quickly results come. Seeing isn't in the eyes, it's in the mind."

Frightened,Toto ran around the room until Dorothy caught him and protected him from falling through the open door.She closed it carefully to avoid further danger.As hours passed,Dorothy slowly got over her fear.She finally fell asleep on her bed with Toto by her side.The wind had set Dorothy's house down gently in a beautiful country.

As she looked around, she saw green grass, fruitful trees, and colourful flowers.Birds with special feathers sang and flew around. As she stood enjoying the beautiful views, a group of strangely dressed people came near. They wore round hats that rose to a small point a foot above their heads. Three men were dressed in blue, and a little woman wore a white dress. They stopped and discussed in a low voice, as if afraid to come farther.

Once upon a time, there was a king. He always worried about what might happen, the future. One day, the king noticed a cobbler(修鞋匠). Although he wore ragged(破旧的)clothes, he was very happy. Why could he smile so brightly? The king decided to find out the reason.

The next day, the king dressed in rags and followed the cobbler home.

"Please, sir, can you give some food to me?" asked the king.

"Of course," said the cobbler.

"Why are you so happy?"

"Today I made enough money by repairing shoes to buy the bread."

"But what will happen if you don't make enough money for food tomorrow?"

"I have confidence. Everything will be fine."

This touched the king. But he wondered what would happen if the cobbler couldn't make enough money. So the next day, the king didn't allow anyone to repair shoes. The cobbler didn't know why, but he wasn't sad. Whenhe saw some villagers trying to carry water home, he helped them and got a little money from them.

That evening the king went to the coobler's house again. The cobbler was having soup and smiling.

"How could you pay for the food today?" asked the king.

"I made money by helping the villagers carry water," said the cobbler. "But what will you do tomorrow?"

"I have confidence. Everything will be fine."

"Your confidence has driven away my fear about the future. Thank you." said the king.
