写作

Does writing come hard to you? Are you discouraged to find yourself poor at writing? Nobody is born knowing how to write. Good writing habits, which help make you write on a regular basis, are necessary for you to improve your writing.

Firstly, you are supposed to read a wide range of books. It's obvious when a writer is not well-read lack of reading will be obvious in every sentence one writes. Reading prepares you with necessary knowledge to be a good writer. What's more, it provides you with basic skills for writing. The importance of reading cannot be stressed too much: read as much and as often as you can.

Secondly, it's important to make a writing schedule and write daily if it is possible. Whether you write for two hours a day or fifteen minutes a day, daily writing is the key to developing good writing habits. It's better to write for fifteen or twenty minutes every day than to sit for five or six hours to write over the weekend. However, if you can make a daily writing schedule with longer hours on your writing on weekends, then it's much better.

One of the worst habits is never to get help from others to improve your writing. It is advised that you share your work with others. For example, you can post scene or you blog, send your writing around to a few friends, round up some readers and let them comment or your writing. That way, you'll find your writing gradually improved.

Henderson Island is a tiny, unpopulated(无人居住的)island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean,3,000 miles from major city centers. Though it is half the size of Manhattan, more than 19 tons of plastic waste litter its white, sandy beaches.

Researchers estimate(估计) that it has the highest concentration of waste of any place in the world with a total of over 37 million pieces of trash in all on the small island. For every square meter you walk, on average you'll find 672 pieces of trash.

Mismanaged waste from land goes into waterways, which feed into larger rivers, which in turn empty into ocean. In this way, plastic from far inland can travel many miles to the coastline, bringing an estimated 9 million tons of plastic every year.

Meanwhile, ocean plastic is estimated to kill millions of animals every year. Nearly 700 species have been reported to be affected by it. Species of all sizes, from zooplankton(浮游动物)to whales, now eat microplastics, the bits smaller than one-fifth of an inch across.

Unfair Comparisons

Thanks to social media, the distance between friends is smaller than ever. But does that make us happier? Not necessarily. A recent study has found spending too much time comparing your life with the seemingly perfect lives of your friends on social media can result in depressive symptoms.

We've all done it —- browsing through our WeChat friends' updates while feeling that green-eyed monster holding its head in our minds: Are their homes bigger and more tasteful? Are their vacations more expensive and exciting? Are their careers more successful and rewarding?

Comparison is the thief of joy. The more time you spend on social media, the more likely it is for you to feel depressive symptoms, according to a new study out of University of Houston. The study, led by Mai-Ly Steers, examines the potential impact online social comparison can have on a person's mental health.

"The underlying mechanism is social comparison," Steers said. "The reason why you feel these feelings is that you tend to socially compare yourself with your friends."

This social comparison theory was popularized by US psychologist Leon Festinger in the 1950s. According to an article in The Atlantic  Festinger argued that people have born tendencies to track their progress and measure their self-worth by comparing themselves with other people. That social comparison leads to feelings of insignificance and insecurity. Research has since found that making social comparisons, especially upward comparisons (to people we think above us for whatever reason), are associated with negative health outcomes like depressive symptoms and decreased self-esteem.

"You can't really control the strong desire to compare because you never know what your friends are going to post. In addition, most of our friends tend to post about the good things that occur in their lives, while leaving out the bad. If we're comparing ourselves with our friends'' sharable highlights', this may lead us to think their lives are better than they actually are, and thus make us feel worse about our own lives."

So if you are the jealous type, maybe think about signing off of your WeChat for a while. Your well-being may depend on it.

A Chinese boy is reported to have spent about 2 million yuan in studying in New Zealand but failed to get any diploma. He even could not take care of himself and his grandmother had to feed him.

The man in the case is a socalled adult baby, because his deeds make him almost the same as a baby. He cannot take care of himself. He is unable to go to school, let alone finish studies. He even relies on his grandmother to feed him.

However, he burns money faster than any normal student. He spent about 2 million yuan in two years overseas, but could not finish even the preparatory courses. We do not mean to judge his choice, but someone who lacks the basic ability to survive has little chance of success in any modern society.

In a later interview, the mother of the boy was in tears and said she regretted not having taught her son well. She also told the story about how she "educated" her son: meeting all his demands, even the unreasonable ones. When he did not perform well in school, she simply spent money in sending him overseas; she would buy whatever he wanted. That was bad for her and bad for him.
