Many years ago, when I worked as a volunteer at Stanford Hospital, I got to know a little girl {#blank#}1{#/blank#} Liz who was suffering from a rare and serious disease. Her only chance of recovery appeared to be a blood transfusion（输血）{#blank#}2{#/blank#} her 5-year-old brother, {#blank#}3{#/blank#} had miraculously survived the same disease and had developed the antibodies needed to fight the {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (ill).

    The doctor explained the situation to her little brother, and asked the boy if he would be willing to give his blood to his sister. I saw him hesitate for a moment before{#blank#}5{#/blank#} (take) a deep breath and saying, “Yes, I'll do it {#blank#}6{#/blank#} it can save Liz.”

    {#blank#}7{#/blank#} the transfusion progressed, he lay in bed next to his sister. {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (see) the color returning to her cheeks, he smiled. Then {#blank#}9{#/blank#} face grew pale and his smile disappeared. He looked up at the doctor and asked with a trembling voice, “Will I start to die right now?”

    Being young, the boy had{#blank#}10{#/blank#}  (understand) the doctor; he thought he was going to have to give his sister all of his blood.

    Today so many people are talking about AIDS, for which, {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (fortunate)，there is no cure now. When we talk about its influence on our society, this disease is {#blank#}2{#/blank#} most severe public health problem of all that we are facing in the 21^st century. It is spreading at a(n) {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (surprise) speed, especially in Africa.

    The UN AIDS organizations have come to the {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (conclude) that in the past 20 years, 20 million people have died of AIDS. And this figure will be three times bigger in the next two decades {#blank#}5{#/blank#} measures are taken in poor countries. Only if people change their basic behavior in time, can AIDS {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (stop) from spreading. For example, in San Francisco, the rate fell greatly when a serious program was carried out. People were {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (please) to change their behavior when they realized how serious a risk they were taking.

    Experts think in order to get the message across to those {#blank#}8{#/blank#} don't realize the seriousness of AIDS, a well {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (design) educational campaign is the only thing at the moment that can help. It would be criminal not to put it into practice. So everyone has a share of responsibility in the fight {#blank#}10{#/blank#}AIDS.

    We travelled to Zimbabwe not long ago.  Before we started, we'd been warned not just by one person,{#blank#}1{#/blank#}by many people.

    The day we crossed the famous bridge over Victoria Falls to Zimbabwe we {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (greet) by friendly border agents and the border police waved us on our way with a smile. We started to give a second thought to {#blank#}3{#/blank#} warning we'd been given.

    The first day we took the backroads(乡村小道)to Binga, a place that was {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (former)a popular destination for those looking to rent houseboats and go fishing on the lake. The next day we drove on single track roads through remote villages. Villagers would stop and stare as we drove by, as {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (see) tourists in this area was {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (rare) than a blue moon. The road conditions continued to worsen, but the {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(beautiful) of the region grew too. We climbed up and down the mountains and valleys {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(fill) with native birds and wildlife.

    We pulled into Kariba where the lake ends and the Zambezi River continues.{#blank#}9{#/blank#} it is just a small town in Zimbabwe, it brings people a lot. We felt that Zimbabwe had treated {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(we) nicely-it would be hard to leave.
