Once upon a time, there was an island where all the feelings lived: Happiness, Sadness, Knowledge, and all of the others, including Love. Is there intelligent (有智力的) life on other planets? For years, scientists said "no" or "we don't know". But today this is changing. Seth Shostak and Alex Barnett are astronomers (天文学家). They believe intelligent life lives somewhere in the universe. They also think we will soon contact(联系) it.

Why do Shostak and Barnett think intelligent life lives on other planets? The first reason is time. Scientists believe the universe is about 12 billion years old. "This is long enough for other planets to have intelligent life," say Shostak and Barnett. The second reason is size — the universe is huge. "Tools like the Hubble Telescopes(哈勃望远镜) have shown that there are at least 100 billion galaxies," says Shostak. "And our galaxy, the Milky Way, has at least 100 billion stars. Some planets going around these stars might be similar to the earth."

In the past, it was hard to look for signs of intelligent life in the universe. But now, powerful telescopes (高倍望远镜) allow scientists to find smaller planets — the size of Mars or the earth — in other solar systems. These planets might have intelligent life.

Has intelligent life from space already visited the earth? "Probably not," says Shostak. "It's a long way away. However, intelligent life may contact us in other ways, such as radio. In fact, they may be trying to communicate with us now, but we don't have the right tools to receive their messages. However, this is changing. By 2025, we could make contact with other life forms in our universe and we might help each other."

We are pleased to announce the results of our competition to create a new school festival for students to celebrate this year. This competition, which we have had twice, has been a huge success. But this year, we have had more entries (参赛作品) than ever before!

We have received many wonderful suggestions, including one that suggested there should be a festival of shoes! This was certainly a creative idea, but not surprisingly, our judges (裁判) liked other suggestions more!

The winning suggestion was from Henry Chan, who suggested that there should be a festival of bicycles. It was the judges' favorite. Henry, who is in Grade Eight, said that he went to school by bicycle every day and enjoyed taking bicycle trips very much. He added that so many public bicycles were in use in our city that it would be a shame not to celebrate them.

As part of the festival, a bicycle trip will be organized in the city. Then students will hold a ten-meter bicycle riding competition, in which anyone who can ride the slowest wins. What's more, you students are called on to ride bicycles to school as often as possible.

The Bicycle Festival will be from June 18th and last two days. We hope you will take part in the festival and do your bit to protect our environment!

Ten years ago, I took up studying luck. I wanted to know why some people are always in the right place at the right time, while others always experience ill luck. Many people volunteered for my research. Over the years I interviewed them, watched their lives and had them take part in my experiments(实验).

I carried out a simple experiment to discover why there were differences in their ability to find lucky chances. I gave both lucky and unlucky people a newspaper and asked them to look through it and tell me how many photographs were inside. I had secretly placed a large message halfway through the newspaper saying, "Tell the researcher you have seen this and win $50." This message took up half of the page and was more than two inches(英尺) high. It was looking at everyone straight in the face, but unlucky people tended to(倾向于) miss it and lucky people tended to notice it.

Unlucky people are just more nervous than lucky people. They are busy looking only for what they need and this stops them from noticing the unexpected. As a result, they miss out on chances. Lucky people tend to be more relaxed and open. They can see everything that is in front of them, rather than just what they are looking for.

My research shows that lucky people live by several principles(原则). Here are some of these principles:

* Listen to your gut instincts(直觉) — they are often right.

* Be open to new experiences and break your normal thought patterns.

* Spend a few moments each day remembering things that went well.

* See yourself being lucky before an important meeting or phone call.
