Rise After Falling

    A father was worried about his son,{#blank#}1{#/blank#}was sixteen years old but had no courage at all. So the father decided to call on a Buddhist monk (僧侣){#blank#}2{#/blank#} (train) his boy.

    The Buddhist monk said to the boy's father, “I insist that your son should be left alone here. I'll make him into a real man within three months.{#blank#}3{#/blank#} you can't come to see him during this period.”

    Three months later, the boy's father {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (return). The Buddhist monk arranged a boxing match between the boy and an {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(experience) boxer. Each time the fighter struck the boy, he {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(fall) down, but at once the boy stood up; and each time a heavy blow knocked him down, the boy stood up again. Several times later, the Buddhist monk asked, “{#blank#}7{#/blank#}do you think of your child?”

    “What a shame!” the boy's father said, “I never thought he would be so {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(easy) knocked down. I needn't have him stay here any {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (long)!

     “I'm sorry that that's all you see. Don't you see that each time he falls down, he stands up again instead of {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (cry)? That's the kind of courage you wanted him to have.

    There has been a recent trend in the food service industry toward lower fat content and less salt. This trend, which was started by the medical community(医学界){#blank#}1{#/blank#}a method of fighting heart disease, has had some unintended side{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(effect) such as overweight and heart disease—the very thing the medical community was trying to fight.

    Fat and salt are very important parts of a diet. They are required{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(process) the food that we eat, to recover from injury and for several other bodily functions. When fat and salt{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(remove) from food, the food tastes as if is missing something. As{#blank#}5{#/blank#}result, people will eat more food to try to make up for that something missing. Even{#blank#}6{#/blank#}(bad), the amount of fast food that people eat goes up. Fast food{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(be) full of fat and salt; by{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(eat) more fast food people will get more salt and fat than they need in their diet.

    Having enough fat and salt in your meals will reduce the urge to snack(吃点心) between meals and will improve the taste of your food. However, be{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(care) not to go to extremes. Like anything, it is possible to have too much of both,{#blank#}10{#/blank#}is not good for the health.

    Switzerland is famous{#blank#}1{#/blank#}its watches. However, this country didn't invent the watch. It was the British who did it. Here is a story of how the watch{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (bring) to Switzerland.

    Many years ago,{#blank#}3{#/blank#} Englishman traveled to Italy and on his way he stopped in a small town{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(call) Geneva in Switzerland. And he made a watch of exactly the same type.

    Good morning, boys and girls. I'm here today to share a good story with you. It is a true story about a poor boy, {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(name) William Smith, had only one dollar left. He was so hungry {#blank#}2{#/blank#} he decided to beg for a meal at the next house. A lovely young woman opened the door. Dr. Smith, then requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it and then wrote something on it. The bill was sent to her room. She opened it, and found a note on the side of {#blank#}10{#/blank#} bill in surprise, which read: "Paid in full with a glass of milk, (signed) Dr. William Smith."

    It is reported that many middle school students are just not getting enough sleep, especially during the school week. The problem seems to get {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (bad) as they get older. Year 7 students sleep 8.4 hours in a school night, and Year 9 students only 6.9 hours.

    It's also reported that not getting enough sleep can cause {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (problem) in a student's life. Many students fall {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (sleep) in school or while doing their homework, so it is not {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (surprise) that they get lower grades than those who get enough sleep. Scientists suggest nine hours a night for middle school students. Of the students who feel {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (happy) and nervous, 73% don't get enough sleep at night.

    Why aren't students getting enough sleep? Many students have one of the {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (follow) things, like telephone, television, or computer in their bedrooms. {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (use) them on a school night not only takes their time away from homework, but also makes {#blank#}8{#/blank#} difficult for them to sleep. As a result, many students can't sleep before 11 p. m., yet they must get up early {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (go) to school.

    Scientists also suggest students should not do exciting activities for an hour {#blank#}10{#/blank#} bedtime.
