Around twenty years ago I was living in York. Although I had a lot of experience and a Master's degree, I could not find {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(satisfy) work.

    I was driving a school bus to make ends meet and living with a friend of {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(me), for I had lost my flat. I had attended five interviews with a company and one day between bus runs, they called to say I did not get the job. "Why has my life become so hard?" I thought {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(pain).

    {#blank#}4{#/blank#} I pulled the bus over to drop off a little girl, she handed me an earring {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(say) that I should keep it in case somebody claimed it. The earring {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (paint) black and said "BE HAPPY".

    At first I got angry. Then it hit me — I had been {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(give) all of my attention to what was going wrong with my life rather than what was right! I decided then and there to make a list of fifty things I was happy with. Later, I decided to add more things to the list. That night there was a phone call for me {#blank#}8{#/blank#} a lady who was a director at a larger hospital. She asked me {#blank#}9{#/blank#} I would give a one-day lecture on stress {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(manage) to 200 medical workers. I said yes.

    My day there went very well, and before long I got a well-paid job. To this day I know that it was because I changed my way of thinking that I completely changed my life.

    I am a junior in high school. There is a lady at my school {#blank#}1{#/blank#} job is to hand out call-slips(索书单) and prevent students from leaving campus {#blank#}2{#/blank#} permission. Before today I had never seen her smile.

    The other day my friends and I were eating in the cafeteria {#blank#}3{#/blank#} I saw her walking around. When she came closely to us I could see that she was crying. She pulled out a tissue and quickly wiped her eyes. I thought to {#blank#}4{#/blank#} that this lady was so under-appreciated that she needed {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (praise) for all her hard work. So I wrote a note {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (say) that the students appreciated everything she did and {#blank#}7{#/blank#} her contribution to our school made a difference in all of our lives. I signed it “Some thankful students” and slipped it into {#blank#}8{#/blank#} envelope. Then I realized I didn't even know her name. I asked all of my professors but nobody knew her name. I finally went to ask the lady at student services and {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (tell) that her name is Kathy. I brought her a bunch of {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (color) sunflowers and taped the envelope to it. I brought the flowers to school and left them in her office. I believed I would see her smile soon.

    The Chinese language is one of the{#blank#}1{#/blank#}（old）written languages in the world. It {#blank#}2{#/blank#}（speak）by the Han majority and many other ethnic groups in China. Nearly 1.3 billion people speak some form of Chinese as their first language.

    The{#blank#}3{#/blank#}（vary）of Chinese are usually described by native speakers as dialects of a single Chinese language，but linguists（语言学家）note that they are as diverse as a language family. There are between 7 and 13 main regional groups of Chinese, of{#blank#}4{#/blank#}the most spoken by far is Mandarin（普通话），{#blank#}5{#/blank#}（follow）by Wu, Min, Yue, etc. Standard Chinese is a standardized form of spoken Chinese based on the Beijing dialect of Mandarin. It is{#blank#}6{#/blank#}official language of China, and also one of the six official languages of the United Nations.

    {#blank#}7{#/blank#}many Chinese dialects exist，the written language is still a very common form of communication. If we go to{#blank#}8{#/blank#}（differ）provinces, we may not be able {#blank#}9{#/blank#}（communicate）with the local people orally. However, we can understand each other in writing. The written language can be further divided{#blank#}10{#/blank#}different forms, like simplified Chinese and traditional Chinese. There is also a form called "pinyin", which is the Chinese language with a Roman spelling.

    A British insurance company recently asked 1,000 people {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (vote) on the most romantic letter. A letter by musician Johnny Cash to his wife June Carter Cash {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (win) first place.

    Some say it is not the most romantic letter ever {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (write). But Johnny and June's long life together was {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (evident) of their strong relationship. They married in 1968 and stayed {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (marry) until June Carter Cash died in 2003. Johnny Cash died four months later.

    "We get old and get used to each other. We think alike. We read each other's minds. We know {#blank#}6{#/blank#} the other wants without asking. Sometimes we annoy each other a little bit. Emperor penguins (企鹅) are{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(large) penguins on Earth. Each adult is over a meter tall and weighs up to 40 kilos. Every year in May, mother penguins lay eggs on the coast. Then they will go back to the ocean{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(find) food while the father penguins stay and look after the eggs for the next two months. During this time, {#blank#}3{#/blank#}eating any food, a father penguin can lose half of his body weight. By August, the mothers return just in time to see their babies come out of eggs.
