The city of the future

What will the city of the future look like? No one knows for sure, and making predictions {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(be) a risky business. But one thing is certain —they are going to get bigger before they get smaller. We will use lots of {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(recycle) materials, such as plastic aluminums, steel , glass ,wood and paper, and we will waste fewer {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(nature) resources. We will also have to rely more {#blank#}4{#/blank#}alternative energy, such as solar and wind power.

    A teacher at {#blank#}5{#/blank#} university in the United States asked his students to think {#blank#}6{#/blank#} they would run a city of 50,000 people in the year 2025. Here are some of the ideas they had:

    Garbage ships  To get rid of garbage problems, the city will load huge spaceships with waste materials and send them towards the sun,{#blank#}7{#/blank#} (prevent) landrills and environmental problems .

    Cars  All cars will be powered by electricity, solar energy or wind , and{#blank#}8{#/blank#}will be possible to change the color of cars at the flick of a switch.

    Telesurgery  Distance surgery will become common as doctors carry out operations from thousands of miles away, with each city {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(have) its own telesurgery outpatient clinic.

    Holiday at home  Senior citizens and people with disabilities will be able to go anywhere in the world using high-tech cameras {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(attach) to their head.

    The task of being accepted by a university begins early for some students.Long before {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(graduate) from high school,these students take special courses to prepare for advanced study.They may also take one or more examinations to test how well prepared they are for the university.In the final year of high school,they complete {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(apply) and send them to the universities {#blank#}3{#/blank#}interest them most.Some high school students may be required to have {#blank#}4{#/blank#}interview with people from the university.Neatly {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(dress) and a little bit frightened,they are determined {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(show) that they have a good attitude and the ability to succeed.

    If the new students {#blank#}7{#/blank#}(accept),many universities will offer an instruction programme for them to get to know the procedures for students advising,university rules,the use of the library and all the other major services of the university.

    Beginning a new life in a new place can be very {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(confuse).The more knowledge students have about the school,the {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(easy) it will be for them to adapt to the new environment.However, {#blank#}10{#/blank#} takes time to get used to college life.

    How are you getting along with your high school? It may be hard for you as this is the first time you {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (leave) your parents. I know that you are now having trouble {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (communicate) with others. That's {#blank#}3{#/blank#} you are new here and people don't know about you. But I think you can follow the advice below.

    First, you should take {#blank#}4{#/blank#} active part in the discussions and show your own opinions about the matters, and at the same time, learn to listen to other people's views {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (careful). Second, you should learn about your classmates' likes and dislikes, {#blank#}6{#/blank#} can make you get familiar with them. Only in this way can you get to know more {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (difference) people and show them that you are just as friendly. I'm always here ready to help. We can take part in some {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (activity) together and I can introduce you to others.

    There's no need {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (worry) too much. People will know you more very soon and will like to make friends {#blank#}10{#/blank#} you if you can do as the above. Just remember, “God helps those who help themselves.”

    There is a tradition in my school that when the College Entrance Examination is less than a month away, students in the {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(low) grades, from Senior 1 to Senior 2, all gather together on the ground in front of the teaching building and cheer on the Senior 3 students who are standing upstairs. It wasn't until I {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(person) took part in the activity that I understood the real{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(mean) of it.

I was in Senior 2 at the time. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}that special night, all the Senior 3 students stood in the corridors (走廊) and looked down at the younger students below. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(vary) cheers started to resound throughout the school, wave after wave. "Believe in yourself! You deserve to win！"

    {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(see) everyone's smiling faces around me, I thought of {#blank#}7{#/blank#}famous quote from the American philosopher Henry David Thoreau: What you get by achieving your goals is not as important as what you become by achieving your goals.

    Soon it will be my turn to {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(bless) in this way, {#blank#}9{#/blank#}also means I will have to say goodbye to my school. Sad as it will be, being cheered on by so many students will still be one of the brightest{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(time) of my life.
