As the birds wake up the people on the farm early in the morning, one man is already up. In fact, he has never slept not once in the past 36 years.

    The man has never been ill after so many years of insomnia(失眠). This has not only made him famous, but also interested many scientists to study him.

    Sixty-four-year-old Thai Ngoc said he could not sleep at night after getting a fever in 1973, and since that time he has experienced more than 14，000 sleepless nights.

  “I don't know whether the insomnia has impacted my health or not, but I'm still healthy and can work normally like others,” Ngocsaid.

His wife said,“My husband used to sleep well, but these years, nothing can make him get to sleep.” She said when Ngoc went to Da Nang for a medical examination, doctors said he was healthy.

    Ngoc now lives on his farm at the foot of mountain, busy farming and taking care of pigs and chickens all day. “I have tried sleeping pills and some other medicine, but nothing helps,  even to sleep for a few minutes,” he said.

    Ngoc often does more farm work or helps his neighbors during the sleepless night.

    Jack Brown, an office worker, lives in Washington. He inherited（继承）a million dollars when he was 23, but he wasn't happy at all. When his college friends were looking for their jobs, he didn't have to. Jack decided to keep living a simple life like everyone else. He gave $ 10,000 of his money to a charity to help poor children live a happy life. Today he is 36. He still wears cheap shoes and clothes and drives a small car only, but he is very happy.

    Up to now Jack has helped some children from poor countries all over the world, by sending them each $200 a month. The money is used for the children's study, food, medicine and clothing. Jack receives a report each year on the children's progress(进步）They can write to each other, but usually the children do not speak English.

    When Jack first heard about these children, he wanted to help them. “It was nothing special,”he said.“Until I went to these countries and met the children I was helping, I didn't know anything about their life.” Once Jack went to meet a little girl in Africa, he said that the meeting was very exciting. “When I met her, I felt very, very happy,”he said.“And I saw that the money was used for a good cause. It brought me happiness. I want to do everything I can to go on helping these children.”

    Mike always loves ships. When he was older, he said, “I'm going to be a soldier.” But his eyes were not very1and he did not get in.

    Then he said, “I'm going to2a small boat and I'm going around the world.” But boats were very expensive, and Mike did not have enough3

    Last summer Mike found a swimming4near his house. The lessons did not cost very5 and Mike began going to the school at every end of the week and having6. Now he is a good swimmer.

    Last week a little boy said to him, “You're a very good swimmer. How do7learn to swim so well?”

    “I'm not good at all,” Mike said and he smiled. “8 I'm in the water, I say to myself, “There are 9fishes behind me!” Then I'm very afraid, and I10quickly.”

    I can't remember when I started collecting rubbish. It might be when I got tired of(厌倦) seeing rubbish in the forest near my home. I used to love going there to play with my dog. But one day there was so much rubbish there that I became very unhappy.

    I decided I had to clean up the forest. I made my first trip to clean the forest that afternoon. I took a big black rubbish bag with me. Ten minutes after starting picking up rubbish, my bag was full! It had cans, bottles, broken glass and newspapers in it.

    I go to the forest four times a year to pick up rubbish. I often stay there for three hours. After each trip, I look at all the rubbish. If any of it is recyclable, I will keep it. It makes me feel great to do something for the environment. I will keep picking up rubbish until people stop dropping it.

    A restaurant had one falled upon hard times. Only five 1 were left: the manager and four others, all over 60 years old.

    In the town near the restaurant there lived a successful businessman who was good at managing business, so the manager2to ask the businessman if he could offer any advice that might save the restaurant. The manager and the businessman talked for a long period of time, but when he was asked for advice, the businessman 3for a while and then said, "I have no advice to give. The only thing I can tell you is that the saver (救星) is one of you."

    The manager, returning to the restaurant4, told the other people what the businessman had said. In the months that5, the old restaurant workers thought carefully of the words of the businessman, "The saver is one of us?" They asked themselves. As they thought about this possibility, they all began to treat each other with6respect(尊重). And thinking that each of themselves might be the saver, they also began to treat themselves with more care.

    As time went by, people coming to the restaurant7that some respect and warm kindness were around the five old members of the small restaurant. Hardly knowing 8, more people began to come back to the restaurant. They began to bring their friends, and theirs brought more friends. Two 9 later, the small restaurant had once again become a big food company, thanks to the businessman's10. They understood that it was they themselves that were the savers.
