Every year thousands of tourists visit Pompeii, Italy. They see the sights that Pompeii is famous for —{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(it) stadium, theatres, shops and restaurants. The tourists do not, however, see Pompeii's people. No one has lived in Pompeii for almost 2, 000 years.

    Once, Pompeii was a busy city of 22, 000 people. It {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (lie) at the foot of Mount Vesuvius, a grass-covered volcano. Mount Vesuvius had not erupted for {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (century), so the people of Pompeii felt that they were in {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (safe).

    In August of AD 79, Mount Vesuvius erupted. The entire top of the mountain exploded, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} a huge black cloud rose into the air. Soon stones and hot ashes began to fall on Pompeii. When the eruption ended two days later, Pompeii 6{#blank#}6{#/blank#} (bury) under 20 feet of stones and ashes. Almost all of its people were dead.

    From then on, Pompeii remained under stones and ashes. Then an Italian scientist {#blank#}7{#/blank#} (name) Ginseppe began to uncover Pompeii. {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (slow) and carefully, Ginseppe and his men dug.The city looked almost the same as it had looked in AD 79.There were streets and fountains, houses and shops.There was a stadium {#blank#}9{#/blank#} 20, 000 seats.Perhaps the most important of all, there were everyday objects,{#blank#}10{#/blank#} tell us a great deal about the people who lived in Pompeii. Ginseppe has died, but his work continues.

    At the back of King's College there is a memorial stone in white marble to honor the Chinese poet Xu Zhimo. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (move) to the UK in 1921, Zhimo spent a year studying at King's where he {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (fall) in love not only with the romantic poetry of English poets like John Keats, but also with Cambridge {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (it).

    His poem, Second Farewell to Cambridge, {#blank#}4{#/blank#} is considered to be his most famous one, is now a compulsory text on Chinese literature, {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (learn) by millions of school children across our country every year. The poem {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (clear) paints a portrait of King's and the River Cam, and serves {#blank#}7{#/blank#} a reminder of Xu Zhimo's fondness for his time in Cambridge.

    While the poem had been set to music many times before, the English composer John Rutter, one of the mainstream classical {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (musician), was invited by King's College to make the first musical setting of the text. The new piece, written and recorded in {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (celebrate) of the near 100-year link between King's College {#blank#}10{#/blank#} Xu Zhimo, has been released on a new album on the King's College Record Label.

    Teaching as a volunteer teacher is quite {#blank#}1{#/blank#} experience for Zhang Tian. He became a volunteer teacher in a village school in Guizhou Province,{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(inspire) by the idea of living independently away from home.

    However, not everything lived up to Zhang Tian's hopes. The school, with only three classrooms, was much{#blank#}3{#/blank#}(small) than he had expected. Living in the village was also tougher than he had thought. It took him a long time to adjust{#blank#}4{#/blank#} the life there. The thought of {#blank#}5{#/blank#}(leave)once flashed through his mind, but he quickly gave it up and found ways to deal with the challenges.

    {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(make)school life more colorful for his students  Zhang Tian introduced more subjects to the school. Tough as it is, he has enjoyed working with the children. {#blank#}7{#/blank#} makes him most satisfied is that his students are able to read, speak and write in English and they can learn the language{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(confident).

    Besides teaching, Zhang Tian also contacted charity organizations for help and {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (teach)the villagers how to sell local products online. The {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(contribute) he has made to the village is so great that the villagers treat him as one of them.
