    There is a wonderful story about Jimmy Durante, one of great singers. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (ask) to be part of a show for some old World War II soldiers, he told them he was very busy and he could afford only a few minutes, {#blank#}2{#/blank#} he would come if they wouldn't mind his singing one short song and immediately leaving for his next appointment.     But when Jimmy got on stage, something surprising happened. He went through {#blank#}4{#/blank#} short song and then stayed. The applause grew louder and louder and he kept {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (stay). Pretty soon, he had been on stage {#blank#}6{#/blank#} fifteen, twenty, and then thirty minutes.     When I was a university student, I{#blank#}1{#/blank#}(attract) by the Chinese. So I got a job as a teacher in Wuhan three years ago.{#blank#}2{#/blank#} (think) back, I realize it was the students I. met in the first year and Chinese university life in general{#blank#}3{#/blank#}gave me the deepest impression.

    During my school days, I would rarely give up my spare time to any activity {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(connect) with study.     My first year in China was also my first year as a teacher. It was both challenging{#blank#}7{#/blank#}rewarding. One thing I know for certain is that my year in Wuhan changed me for the{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(good). Thanks to the{#blank#}9{#/blank#}(polite) and warmth of Chinese students, I overcame my fear of speaking in public and became more self-confident. Most{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(important), I met dozens of nice people and made many excellent friends.

    Disposing(处理) of waste has been a problem since humans started producing it. As more and more people choose to live close together in cities, the waste disposal problem becomes {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(increase) difficult.

    During the eighteenth century, it was usual for several neighboring towns to get together to select a faraway spot{#blank#}2{#/blank#}a dump site(垃圾场). People {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (transport) household rubbish, rotted wood, and old possessions to the site. Regularly some of the trash was burned and the rest was buried. The {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (pleasant) sights and smells caused no problem because nobody lived close by. Factories mills (制造厂), and other industrial sites also had waste to be disposed of. Those located on rivers often just dumped the unwanted {#blank#}5{#/blank#} (remaining) into the water. Others built huge burners with chimneys to deal with the problem.

    Several facts make these choices {#blank#}6{#/blank#} (accept) to modern society. The first problem is space. Dumps,{#blank#}7{#/blank#}are now called landfills, are most needed in heavily populated areas. Such areas rarely have empty land suitable for this purpose. The land is either too expensive or too close to residential neighborhoods. A long distance dump has been a common practice,{#blank#}8{#/blank#} once farm areas are refusing to accept rubbish from elsewhere, cheap land within trucking distance of major city areas is nonexistent.{#blank#}9{#/blank#} (aware) of pollution dangers has resulted in more strict rules of waste disposal. Pollution of rivers, ground water, land and air is a price people can no longer pay to get rid of waste. The amount of waste, however, continues to grow.

    {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (recycle) efforts have become commonplace, and many towns require their people to take part. Even the most efficient recycling programs, however, can hope to deal with only about 50 percent of a city's reusable waste.

    It used to be common to see US teenagers busy at fast-food restaurants cooking burgers and {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (clean) tables, especially during the summer vacation. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}, the scene is becoming less common.

    Instead of finding summer jobs, many US teenagers are spending {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (they) free time taking classes.     Chinese high-speed railways are a very {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (comfort) way to travel. They are clean, quiet and efficient. China has led other developing countries and even some developed ones in this field since the first high-speed train {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (come) into use in 2008.
