Last Friday, my friend David called me and invited me and our friend Tom to a party in his university. Tom and I are in{#blank#}1{#/blank#} same class. We both wanted to go to the party, but there was a problem--we'd have a final exam on the {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (come) Monday.

    The art of paper-cutting in China may date back to the second century, since paper {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(invent) by Cai Lun in the Eastern Han Dynasty in China. As paper became more affordable, paper-cutting became one of the most important{#blank#}2{#/blank#}(type) of Chinese folk art. Later,{#blank#}3{#/blank#}different regions adopting their own cultural styles, this art form spread to other parts of the world .{#blank#}4{#/blank#}(usual), the artworks are made of red paper, as red is associated with{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(happy) in Chinese culture, but other colors are also used.

The auspicious (吉祥的)designs symbolize good luck and the avoidance of evil, The child, lotus (莲花) and bat designs suggest a family with {#blank#}9{#/blank#}large number of children and grandchildren. Birds, livestock, fruit, fish and worms are also familiar objects {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(accept) by Chinese farmers. In a word, papercuts used in different occasions have different meanings.

    China to Promote Traditional Opera in Schools

    China´s central government has promised to promote traditional opera in schools.

    Primary schools, secondary schools, colleges {#blank#}1{#/blank#} universities will give students the opportunity {#blank#}2{#/blank#} (watch) traditional opera free of charge, according to a guideline jointly {#blank#}3{#/blank#} (issue) by the publicity department of the Communist Party of China and the ministers of culture, education and finance. By 2018, students in all schools and colleges nationwide can watch {#blank#}4{#/blank#} opera free of charge every year.

    The campaign for traditional opera to reach students {#blank#}5{#/blank#}（be）common in all schools in 2020, according to the guideline. The guideline also urges schools to strengthen the creation of opera interest group. {#blank#}6{#/blank#} calls on the joint effort of the government, education, society and individuals to support the campaign.     Cold Food Day, which honors Jiezitui, a hermit (隐士) who lived some 2600 years ago, used to be observed {#blank#}1{#/blank#} (wide), but today few Chinese observe it except on and around the mountain on {#blank#}2{#/blank#} the hermit lived.

    Jiezitui served {#blank#}3{#/blank#} an advisor to Chong'er, a prince in the state of Jin. A civil war forced the prince {#blank#}4{#/blank#} (leave) Jin and Jie Zitui followed him. {#blank#}5{#/blank#}, when Chong'er returned and became the ruler of Jin, his followers were rewarded with money, land and official jobs {#blank#}6{#/blank#} Jie Zitui was overlooked.

    So Jie Zitui chose the life of a hermit on Mt. Mian, where he took care of his elderly mother. Chong'er's men set fires on Mt. Mian to drive him out of {#blank#}7{#/blank#} mountain and then reward him. But Jie and his mother refused and were burned to death. Out of {#blank#}8{#/blank#} (sad), Chong'er declared Cold Food Day in honor of him. It {#blank#}9{#/blank#} (celebrate) for centuries in China until {#blank#}10{#/blank#} (replace) by the more popular Tomb Sweeping Festival, which begins the day after.

    Digital receipts offer a few improvements over {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(tradition) paper receipts. One is health-related. Lots of receipt paper contains bisphenol—A, or BPA.
