    May Day is the day when we celebrate the end of winter and the arrival of spring. It's a time of new life, with new leaves on the trees and wildflowers growing in the woods and fields. On that day, children in Britain and other parts of Europe often make May baskets and hang them on a neighbor's door as a gift of love and friendship.

    Here are the steps of making this kind of basket.

    Step 1 Food paper into a cone（圆锥形） and stick it to keep the shape.

    Step 2 Cut top of the cone with scissors.

    Step 3 Make two holes on opposite sides of the cone. Leave 5cm form the top.

    Step 4 Pass ribbon（彩带） through holes and tie it to create a basket handle.

    Step 5 Fill your basket with different kinds of flowers.

    Lu Xun was an excellent writer and thinker of modern China. He took part in the May

    Fourth New Culture Movement of 1919. He could be said to have laid the foundation(基础)of modern literature(文学)in China. You couldn't believe that he almost became a doctor! So how did Lu Xun give up the study of medicine and take up writing？

    When he was young, his father fell badly ill, and little Lu Xun bought medicine for him.

    But the medicine bought from a quack doctor(庸医)did his father no good at all, and his father died. With a deep sadness and great anger, Lu Xun promised to study the most modern medical skills and help people through medicine. He studied hard, and was accepted to study in Sendai Medical College in Japan.

    However, one event changed Lu Xun's life. One day, the teacher played a film of news in class. In the film, Japanese soldiers were preparing to kill a Chinese while some Chinese were watching it with great interest, as if it had nothing to do with them. After that, Lu Xun thought he should treat the numb(麻木的)spirits of Chinese.

    For this reason, he gave up the study of medicine and moved to Tokyo. He produced a magazine with some friends there. As a writer. Lu Xun hoped that he could save Chinese people with his pen. Many of his works were translated into the leading languages, including English, Russian, German, French and Japanese.

    On Nov. 18, 1908, three men went up in a balloon. They started early in London. The headman was Augusta Gaudron, and the other two men were Tannar and Maitland. They had a big balloon and they were ready for a long way.

    Soon they heard the sea. They carried a usual rope, and it was hanging down from the basket of the balloon. At the end of the rope they had tied(系) a metal box. This could hold water, or it could be empty. So they were able to change its weight. It was for use over the sea. They also carried some bags of sand.

    After the Sun rose, the balloon went higher. It went up to 3,000 metres, and the air was very cold. The water in the box became ice. Snow fell past the men's basket, and they could see more snow on the ground. The men tried to throw out some more sand; but it was hard. They tried to break the icy sand with their knives, but it was not easy. The work was slow and they were still falling, so they had to drop(投下) some whole bags of sand.

    One of them fell on an icy lake and made a black hole in the ice.

At last they pulled the box into the basket. They rose to 5, 100 metres! Everything became icy. They were so cold that they decided to land. They came down in Poland safely. They had travelled 1,797 kilometres from London!

    You may know the song Happy Birthday very well.{#blank#}1{#/blank#} It was written by an American girl. When she was a child she was poor. Once, she was invited to her friend's birthday party. {#blank#}2{#/blank#} "The party is coming soon, but now I have little money.” the girl said to herself. Later that night she was in bed, thinking about the gift when the door opened and her grandma came in. “What happened?" her grandma asked. After hearing the girl's story, she said, "Don't worry. I think I can help you. How about singing a song together? Happy birthday to..." {#blank#}3{#/blank#} Suddenly she woke up. It was a dream. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}When she sang the song at the party the next day, her friend was very happy. She said, "How beautiful you sing! I haven't heard such a beautiful song before.
