A special picnic Most people love a family picnic. But what should they do when they're having a picnic and it 1 ? That's something that will often happen in rainy England. My family's picnics were 2 . We didn't have a picnic basket or a car to 3 our picnic things. So, we'd go to a supermarket, get a shopping trolley（手推车）and 4 it with picnic food. Then we'd go to the river to have a picnic. We liked frogs so we usually went to nature to watch the5 from a close distance. One day, just after our picnic with a shopping 6 , we decided to go into the woods. We pulled the shopping trolley over the grass, hoping not to 7 any little bugs. That was when the 8 rain came pouring down! We got really wet. 9 we didn't mind. My sister, my brother and I were kids and we 10 the rain. After watching some frogs for a while, it was time for us to11 But the way back was not easy. The rain had made all the snails(蜗牛) 12 ! They were everywhere! With our big shopping trolley, we had to be 13 or our trolley would hurt them! As the rain 14 , there were more and more snails. But 15 , we arrived at home and didn't hurt any snail!

Mr. Hamel picked up a grammar book and read us our lesson. I was surprised at how well I understood it－everything he said seemed so easy! Mr. Hamel had never explained things so patiently. It was as if the poor man wanted to give us all his knowledge in one go.

After grammar, we moved on to writing. For this last day, Mr. Hamel had prepared new examples written in a beautiful style: France, Alsace. Everyone worked hard in dead silence. The only sound was the scratching of pens on paper.

Pigeons (鸽子) cooed softly on the roof. I wondered if they would be forced to sing in

German, too. Mr. Hamel looked at the things around him as if he wanted to remember everything in the small classroom. He had been in this same place for forty years. The desks and chairs were worn with use. The walnut trees in the garden had grown up. The flowers he had planted were now climbing up to the roof.

It must have been sad for the poor man to leave all these things behind. His sister was packing their bags upstairs. They were leaving the country tomorrow.

Mr. Hamel bravely kept on teaching the lesson to the end. After writing, we had history. And at the end of the day, the little children read "BA, BE, BI, BO, BU" together. The old man put on his glasses and read with them. He held his textbook tightly in both hands. His voice was shaking.

Suddenly, the church bell rang. Mr. Hamel got up from his chair. His face was pale, but he had never looked so tall before.

"My friends, I…" But something stopped him. He could only turn around and pick up a piece of chalk. As large as he could, he wrote "…"

"Today's lesson is over. You can go now," he said.

A WELCOME TO TONGJIANG ZOO

The zoo has more than 2,000 animals of 400 kinds. Big elephants from Yunnan, tigers from the south and the northeast of China, and the African lions, giraffes and zebras, are all waiting for you. Lovely pandas and clever monkeys are going to make you laugh. A lot of other animals which you have never seen are waiting to meet you. It's home to a collection of animals.  

Tongjiang Zoo was built in 1985 and is about 20,000 square metres. There is basic information of each kind of animal about their birthplace and living habits. You can certainly learn a lot. You are welcome to take photos with some animals.

Opening time: 9:00—16:30 on weekdays, and 8:00—17:30 on weekends

Tips: Keep the zoo clean. Do not feed the animals.

If the gift is too expensive, it will be hard for you to pay for it. Teng Fei is a middle school student and he doesn't have too much money. It takes him about 20 yuan to buy some flowers for his mother as a birthday gift. His mother is very happy. 

Know what your family need

Try to know more about your family and then you can know your family's need. Chen Jie's grandmother lives in Beijing. Chen Jie sends a beautiful sweater to her. The grandmother says it is very special and warm. 

 Billy always loved blueberries. They were his favorite fruit. Today he was going to make juice with his uncle. His uncle liked to make juice out of everything. He made carrot juice, apple juice, vegetable juice, and more juices. He had never made blueberry juice before though!

 First, Billy and his uncle went to a blueberry farm. They were each given a basket. They picked for an hour and got several pounds. It was hard work picking the little berries from the trees. Now Billy understood why they were expensive in the store. 

 Next, they had to wash the fruit. Some of them still had leaves. Those had to be pulled off. Then the bad berries had to be thrown away. They washed the berries and made them air-dry. 

 After that, they pushed the blueberries through a strainer (过滤器). The strainer caught most of the seeds and skins, and only left a small glass of dark purple juice to them. 

 When they tasted the juice, it wasn't very sweet. Billy's uncle didn't want to add white sugar (糖) to the juice. It was better to use a naturally sweet juice, like apple juice, pear juice, or grape juice. They use grape juice as a sweetener, because grapes had a similar color to the blueberries. 

 Finally, they could drink it. It was a lot of work to make juice, but it sure was refreshing!

East China Normal University in Shanghai is home to at least 13 stray dogs (流浪狗).  Every night, members of the university's animal protection club are happy to walk the dogs.  As soon as a dog-walking notice is put up in a WeChat group, the walking task will be taken in a few minutes. 

"We make a plan for walking dogs at the beginning of each term, but there are always changes, so we'll call for help in our WeChat group,"said Xie Yifan, a member of the club.  "It seems that this year more students have joined the club, so stray dogs have become ‘rare' (稀有的). "

The animal protection club was started in 2004.  Stray dogs and stray cats were once a problem at the university.  The dogs chose to live at the university because of the large green spaces and friendly students there, but they caused safety problems for people.  To protect dogs and people at the university, some students then decided to build a kennel (狗舍).  There are 13 dogs living in the kennel now. 

"Taking care of these stray dogs and cats isn't very easy," Xie said.  The work of the club members includes cleaning the kennel, bathing the dogs, and taking them to animal hospitals to have a health examination.  The cost comes from the club's activity fund and income (收入) from selling creative products.  

Instead of keeping them in the kennel, the club members hope the stray dogs can be adopted (收养).  They hope to find forever homes for them.
