Poems for Children is a book of poems. These poems were chosen by the poet Julie Waters and they carry children on a wonderful journey of poetry.

The book contains 50 poems which were written by poets from many different countries. There are poems old and new from W.B. Yeats. Robert Louis Stevenson, Waller de la 'Mare and many other famous poets around the world. You can find poems about joy, humour, beauty and mystery.

This book is a treasure because Waters has chosen some really fine poems. There are short ones like The Parkby James S. Tippett and Until I saw the sea by Lilian Moore, together with longer ones like Kept Busy by Joanne Bums and The Explosion by Philip Larkin. They create wonderful images in the reader's mind and tell a story. Children can learn how beautiful and musical the English language can be when they read the poems aloud.

Another part of the book which makes it attractive is Charlotte Green's introduction. It teaches children how to read and appreciate （欣赏）poems. Green uses simple words so children can understand them easily. This is a must- read for both beginners and advanced learners of poetry.

Cannon is American and his hobby is unusual. He is interested in flags and his collection includes more than 200 flags of countries around the world. Because of his hobby, he gets the nickname(绰号)" The flagman".

Emma likes listening to music in her free time. She also likes reading books and one of her favorite books is The Old Man and the Sea. But her favorite hobby is making clothes. She thinks it is very interesting.

In Bill's free time, he likes reading books, drawing and playing volleyball. He also enjoys talking with his friends and playing the piano. He has piano lessons every Thursday and Sunday.

In Tina's free time, she often helps her parents do housework. She cleans the rooms, washes the dishes, walks the dog and helps her sister with her studies. But her favorite thing is cooking. She wants to be a great cook when she grows up.

Jessica likes doing volunteer (志愿者) work in her free time. She goes to the old people's home with her classmates twice a month. And sometimes she goes to the market to help old people. She also helps clean the park in her neighborhood.

The train started moving. It was packed with people of all ages. Most of them were working men and women and young college boys and girls. Near the window sat an old man with his son, who looked about thirty years old. 

As the train moved, the son was filled with joy because he was very excited at the scenery(景色) outside. He said in a high voice, " See Dad, the green trees and the scenery are very beautiful!" It made the other people feel very strange. Everyone started talking in a low voice about the old man's son. Suddenly, it started raining. Raindrops fell on the travelers through the opened window. 

Seeing the rain, the old man's son said happily, " See Dad, how beautiful the rain is!" Hearing these words, a young lady became angry with the man, as the raindrops were dropping on her new clothes. She couldn't help shouting at the noisy son and his father. 

" Can't you see it is raining? You ! Old man! If your son is not feeling well, get him to a mental hospital (精神病院) quickly and please don't disturb(干扰) us any more!" The old man's face turned slightly red and then in a low voice, he replied, " We are on the way back from hospital. He was blind at birth. Only last week he can see again. The rain and the nature are new to him. Please forgive him. " All the other people became quiet. 

I'm Robert and I live in Shanghai now. Last weekend, I went to a village for a vacation with my friends. 

My trip started early in the morning at Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station. After two hours on the train to Ningbo and more than two hours on the bus, I arrived at the village: Fengpuao. Fengpuao looks so small on the map, but 2, 000 people live there, next to a lake and forests. 

I stayed with my host family (寄宿家庭) for two days. They told me that I could call them Mama and Baba. 

They had a daughter called Eva and she showed me around the garden and told me how to grow vegetables. I also went with Baba to a bamboo forest. Then we went to the lake to go fishing. In the evening, my family and friends came over. We had a big dinner together. 

The next day I woke up with the song of birdsi. After breakfast, we went to work on the farm all day.  It was hard but very interesting. That evening I came back to Shanghai. 

The trip was short, but it made me relax from the busy life. And it was a great time together with my host family.
