That morning, I got on the train as always. I was a publishing director and was looking forward to embracing a new day of work, as usual. I would always turn to the crossword, but that day it didn't make sense. I'd been doing it for 30-old years, but trying to read this one was like walking through syrup(糖浆): 1 slow and hard. I thought I must be tired.

I said to my assistant. The 2 colleague contacted my wife, Beth, and she drove me straight to hospital. There, confirmation came that I'd had a stroke (中风) in the part of my brain that 3 with communication. I was now in a condition that means it's difficult or 4 to acquire and produce language. It was the only time I cried.

I was back at home a week later, and my goal was to get better and return to work in a couple of months. The way to 5 my language ability was rough. I'd look at simple pictures and try to describe them as my mind 6 round and round in the darkness, looking for words.

As the months passed, it became self-evident that I wasn't going to be able to go back to my old job. For 25 years, I had 7 myself as a publisher. I was used to a busy day of meetings. I didn't feel ready to say goodbye to my old self. There were times when I felt incredibly 8 . In the darkest months, I devoted myself to 9 . I couldn't manage novels or newspapers, 10 I tried reading poetry, and found the shorter lines less overwhelming. My speech came back, and I learned how to read again, though much more slowly. I also learned the 11 to keep up. I allowed myself to12 , and started to enjoy it.

13 , I get rid of my old skin. I grieved the past, its passing and its absence, and started to come to terms with it. Now, 10 years later, I look after my grandson a day a week, and my relationship with my family is deeper than ever. If you'd asked me 15 years ago to 14 the importance of the things in my life I might have said work, but now I'm no longer a high-achieving publisher or someone who reads 10 books a week. I'm a 15 man, and if I read 10 books a year, that's pretty good.

When I was twelve, I wrote the first note to my mother, "Hi, Mom! Have a nice day! Love, Marie! ", and I folded the note into her change purse(零钱包) .

My mother worked as a cleaner in a clothing factory. I knew that when she bought meals in the dining hall, she would have to look for change in her purse. I didn't know that she would keep that note, and always carry it with her.

From the day that I carefully folded the small piece of paper into my mother's change purse. ____. They would be put in the fridge, under a lamp, or beside the TV set. I even found one hidden in my shoe. From the outside, our notes may have been general records of our days, ideas and wishes. But to my mother and me, they were a lifelinea special communication with each other that no one else shared.

On October 20, 2009, my mother died after a long illness. I stood near her bed, holding her hand. I didn't cry the day my mom died, and I didn't cry a week later when I went to collect her things. I was so thankful that she no longer had aches and pains.

Recently, I found a note that my mom had left me. It had been hidden in the pages of my favorite childhood book for years. It read, "Dear Marie, I love you always. Miss you a lot. Don't forget me. Be happy! Love, Mom" That day, I cried.

 阅读理解

① As Daddy's only daughter, I know what makes my Daddy more fantastic than all the other fathers — his big hands.

② Daddy has smart hands that can make lots of paper toys for me to play with. His hands can also make my hair beautiful. That's why I feel happy when other students talk about my hairstyle. I keep it to myself for years. What's more, his hands can paint a second-hand bike to look new. I get one on my tenth birthday. His hands can cook a delicious and colorful meal in minutes. I feel interested in watching his hands work.

③ Daddy's creative hands are also useful and hard-working. They can fly a kite high in the sky and get it down from the top of a tree. They can wash my white dress clean, which becomes my favorite one. To my surprise, those hands could feed seven children after Mom died (死亡) . It is his feelings that show what he really is, far more than his abilities (能力).

④ Not only are Daddy's hands great, they can also send me a note full of love. When I am ill, he makes me feel better. He will take a small blanket (毯子), warm it up and put it around my small cold feet with his loving hands. They seem to know I am feeling terrible before I can cry (哭). When I am worried about something, Daddy will often hand me a cup of hot milk and sit next to me. He will say, "The best is always to come, my dear."

⑤ The more I read Daddy's hands, the more stories I get from them. Daddy's hands are fantastic. They have the knowledge (知识) and power to move mountains. They make the impossible possible (可能) .

 请阅读下面短文,根据信息,回答 5 个问题。要求所写答案语法正确,语义完整切题。

I'm Tony. From a young age, I began to love skiing.I have skied since I was eight or nine years old. But once in the USA I was close to death.

It was April 1st, 2011. I skied in the Tetons with my friends Jeremy and Xavier. While I was skiing, they were watching me in a safe area, Then I turned  around and saw the whole mountain start to move behind me. It was a massive avalanche. Thousands of tons of snow was coming down the mountain behind me. I felt that the snow pushed me forward hundreds of meters,and then covered me.

It was so heavy that I couldn't move. And then it pushed me forward again.

I looked down into the bottom of the valley(山谷).  "OK, I'm going all the way to the bottom! " I thought. Then the snow pushed me again down the mountains. I thought the snow would destroy me. But in the end, I felt the avalanche slow down and I just jumped out of the snow at the bottom of the valley.

It took Jeremy and Xavier about 20 minutes to find me. They couldn't believe it when they saw me. I was so lucky.

Has the experience changed me? Do I think about life differently? I don't know, but I do know that it's important to live your life seriously. Life is a gift, so use it wisely.
