It was the final（决赛） of the national high school basketball game. For the first time in their history，a team from a small town faced last year's best team. The players thought they couldn't win and wanted to give up. Seeing this，the coach told them a story. 

Peter was a woodcutter. He was afraid he would fall ill and die. His wife told him that as long as his hands and feet were warm，he wasn't dead. 

One day，Peter went out to cut down trees. It was snowy and cold. After finishing his work，he noticed that his hands and feet were completely frozen. He thought he was dead，so he stopped working and lay down on the ground. 

After Peter had been lying for a while, some wolves came over. They ate all the food in Peter's food bag. The wolves then noticed Peter lying quietly on the ground. They were getting closer to Peter. Peter thought， "If I weren't dead，I would kill you all. " When the wolves saw Peter doing nothing，they ate him. 

As the coach finished the story，the players talked about how silly Peter was. At the same time，they realized what their coach wanted them to understand：the opposing（竞争的） team was like the wolves，and they were like the woodcutter. They should fight till the end，whether they were "alive" or "dead". 

Ben was a boss. When he was young, he didn't work hard. So he knew {#blank#}1{#/blank#} about the world, and he was often laughed at in public and sometimes he got into trouble. So he {#blank#}2{#/blank#} a lot of books and shelves and put them in his sitting room so that the visitors could see them as soon as they went in. He often went to the parties and listened to {#blank#}3{#/blank#} other men said carefully. He hoped to make friends with them.

Once Ben was told that it was a famous professor's birthday that day. He hurried there with his {#blank#}4{#/blank#}. He gave the professor (教授)some expensive presents and the old man {#blank#}5{#/blank#} him very much. After dinner they began to talk {#blank#}6{#/blank#} some famous books. He could hardly answer {#blank#}7{#/blank#} questions. The professor asked him the easiest one, "What was Shakespeare" "It was a {#blank#}8{#/blank#} of drink," answered Ben. "But people do not like it now. " The professor had a smile and soon he stopped talking with Ben. On {#blank#}9{#/blank#}way home, Ben's wife said, "You {#blank#}10{#/blank#}a mistake just now. Shakespeare is a kind of cake, like the Chinese mooncake." 

Once, three fish lived in a pond. One evening, some fishermen passed by the pond and saw the fish. "This pond is full of fish," they told each other excitedly. "We have never fished here before. We must come back tomorrow morning with our nets and catch these fish!" So saying, the fishermen left.

When the eldest of the three fish heard this, he was afraid. He called the other fish together and said, "Did you hear what the fishermen said? We must leave this pond at once. The fishermen will return tomorrow and kill us all!"

The second of the three fish agreed. "You are right," he said. "We must leave the pond."

But the youngest of the three fish laughed. "You are worrying without reason," he said. "We have lived in this pond all our lives, and no fisherman has ever come here. Why should these men return? I'm not going anywhere—my luck will keep me safe."

The eldest of the three fish left the pond that evening with his entire family. The second fish saw the fishermen coming in the distance early next morning and left the pond at once with all his family. The third fish refused to leave even then.

The fishermen arrived and caught all the fish left in the pond, including the third fish's luck.

 In small towns, people are used to saying hello to their neighbors in stores, on the streets and in front of their homes. In today's city life, people may feel uncomfortable talking to neighbors they do not know well in line at the supermarket. But greeting your neighbors is actually good for you, especially if you say hello to six people, according to a recent survey.

 Saying hello to people increases well- being(幸福), but six is the magic number. The well- being score increases from zero to six and then there are no further increases. These results are part of the Gallup National Health and Well- Being Index which studies overall well- being and is calculated on a scale of (在……范围内)0 to 100. The survey was carried out from May 30th to June 6th, 2023 and was based on the answers from 4,556 Americans. It covered social well- being, physical well- being, community well- being and more. People who said they didn't say hello to anyone in their neighborhood scored a 51.5. People who greeted six neighbors had a score of 64.1.

 You might think that saying hello to neighbors is only about social well- being, but that actually isn't the case. In fact, regular(经常的) greetings also improve a person's physical well- being and community well-being.      ▲      You will be more likely to speak to people if you think your community is safe. Your physical well- being can improve if you are getting out and walking around your neighborhood.

" We don't require that you know the person well; just stop and talk to him," said Dan Witters, the survey's director." But the more people to whom you say hello, the greater the probability is that you' re actually going to start a conversation with them."

 While this is just a survey for now, saying hello on a regular basis is a good way to improve your own well- being.
