"Today, Niki will clean the floor,"our mother said. It was time to do our weekly housework. Our mother already had everything planned.

I started to sweep the floor. My brother Ben took the detergent(洗衣粉) to clean the windows and my sister Sarah took out the iron(熨斗). All of us had something to do. However, as I was not good at cleaning, I did not do a good job. In the end, my mother had to clean the floor again. Ben was clumsy(笨拙的 ). He splattered(泼溅 ) the detergent all over the floor and the sofa. My mother was exasperated. She decided to take over. Sarah was the only one who was doing a good job. She ironed one piece of clothing after another. However,she was ironing my mother's dress when her favorite advertisement came on television. Putting down everything, she watched the advertisement for a new toy carefully. She did not notice the smoke coming from the iron until she heard our mother shouting.

Our mother was so angry that she took over the ironing, too.

Finally, we watched TV and ate potato chips. Mom said we were not good at housework. However, we knew that she would ask us to do housework again the next time.

Mum and I wanted to do something exciting during the summer vacation, so she 1  that we take the train to Grandma's house. Grandma lived far from our 2 , so we would spend one day and one night on the 3  just getting there.

"He wants to run home." said Dad. "I know where he lives. In a little round world of ants, under the apple tree."

"And has he got a wife and children—a lot of little ants at home?"

"Well, there are father ants and mother ants, and lots of other ants who are 11 to the little ones. 12 knows his own children, but all the grown-up ones are kind to all the babies. See how he hurries off!"

While they were talking, the little ant was soon 13 among the grass. In a little while came the ant with a group of friends. 

"He has been home and told them the good 14 about the honey," said Dad. "Do you think that all children are as kind as that?"

"No, I don't run to call my friends when I find a good place of blackberries."

"Then," said father, "just learn from the ant, 15 he is only a little tiny thing."

In a peaceful mountain village, a father named Edward and his beloved son Bob lived in a small farmhouse.

Edward was a hard-working 1 who worked on his land every day. Bob was a lively and innocent (纯真的) boy, and he always followed his father around. The son could often learn something 2 about life from his father.

My life is always filled with sadness and little joy, but I can always face it bravely.

Many years ago, a Spanish officer named Coronado he ard the story of seven great cities. "The walls of these cities are made of gold, " his friends told him. "The people eat meat from golden plates and wear 1  clothes, " they said. They called these cities the Seven Cities of Gold. Coronado believed what his friends said 2 . 

Coronado thought to 3 , "The things in these cities must be worth a lot of money. " So he decided to 4  the Seven Cities of Gold. He brought some men, horses, and food, then they headed west. Coronado and his men 5  for many days. Then they saw some cities. "We found the Seven Cities of Gold!" his men shouted, 6  Coronado wasn't happy. He had a different 7 , "These can't be the Seven Cities of Gold. They're made of dirt!"

Coronado was 8 . The cities were dirty and brown. The people ate food from 9  bowls. Their clothes were also very common. Coronado saw the cities as old places. "What 10  to the cities of gold?" he thought. "Did someone 11  come and take the gold?"

That night, the people of the cities entertained(款待) Coronado and his men and served them food. They 12  Coronado to go home. "There is no gold here, " they told him. Coronado was angry. Did his friends lie(撒谎) to him?

Coronado 13  the next morning when the sun rose. He looked back 14  the city one more time. The sun sh one on the dirty houses. Coronado thought he saw a bit of gold. Were his friends right after all?"No, " he told himself. "It's just the 15 . " Then he turned away and went home.
