Scene1 (At Salesman's home)

Narratage (画外音): In a dark dirty house, there lived a small, dirty salesman He always makes unhealthy candies and sells them to the students. He has a lot of money now. But how does he make the candies? Oh, oh! He is coming!

Salesman: Hello, do you know me? No? Oh, let me tell you. I'm the famous candy salesman at the school gate. My candies are very popular, I don't know why. The foolish students always come here. I'll be a boss soon!Candy, money, candy, money...

Oops! It's time to make candies now.

First, put the flour (面粉) on the table.

Then, water, sugar, flour.

Now press (按压), press... Oh, my dirty hands! Never mind! Just do it!

Press, press... Oh, my god! Never mind! Just do it!

Press, press, the children will not know it. It's OK, hehehe...

Now let me cut it into pieces!

In China, there is a fun activity on a baby's 1st birthday. People call it "Zhuazhou". 

On that day, parents usually put a table on the bed. On the table, there are some books, pens, rulers, food, toys and so on. Then parents put the baby at the table and the baby can take anything on it. 

The things may show what the baby may be good at in the future. For example, if a baby takes a book, people will say he or she will be good at writing. If a baby takes a kitchen ware (厨具), people will say he or she will be a good cook. When a baby takes a cake or a toy, people will say he or she will know how to enjoy life more. 

Today, we have a "Zhuazhou" for my cousin. He takes a book from the table. My uncle is very happy and calls him "Wenhao". He puts much hope(希望) on the name.

 You don't need money for this vending machine(自动售货机), and it also won't give you any food like chocolates, chips or cola. What you' ll get from the vending machine is a book. First graders at A. M. Kulp Primary School were the first to try out the new machine. It was installed(安装) at the school during the third week of February 2024.

 Alyssa Nedorezov— the librarian, the person who works in the library, has been dreaming of this for about a year. She always wants to help students read. She says when students read both in and out school, it will greatly help with the students' reading and make it easier for them to keep a reading habit. Students like getting anything from a vending machine. Alyssa Nedorezov thinks it is fun for kids to get books there. So they will be really interested in reading and fall in love with it.

 Here's how it works. When students do something good, their teachers give them something called" cat paw". Then they can change their cat paws into the vending machine tokens(代币). The token works in the vending machine, and students can choose any book to take home to read for some time or keep forever.

 What if there is such a machine in your school in the future?
