March 30th is the World Bipolar Day. Liu Tiebang, president of Shenzhen Kangning Hospital,introduced bipolar disorder (BD) to the public in an effort to raise awareness for the mental health illness.

Bipolar disorder, also called manic depression (躁郁), is a mood disorder which can cause a patient's mood to change from a very high to a very low. Manic symptoms (症状) can include increased energy, quick response, unusual talkativeness, a lack of need for sleep, high self-esteem and so on. Depressive symptoms can include less energy, loss of interest or pleasure, feeling worthless, low self-esteem and suicidal(自杀性的) thoughts.

Patients with BD are often misdiagnosed (误诊） as depression. Liu said that while someone is experiencing a manic stage, he or she may be unusually talkative, sociable and outgoing. Patients having these kinds of problems may not realize that they are ill and often do not look for medical care. On the other hand, patients experiencing depressive periods are more likely to be noticed.

"With the development of treatments and medications, the treatments for BD have become better at present," said Liu. "The medications are safer. Patients getting the right treatments at the earlier stage of BD have a higher possibility of recovery (恢复); or the mania and depression may happen again."

For patients with BD, in addition to medication, other methods such as physical treatments, psychological treatments, social support groups and crisis intervention may be useful for managing their symptoms and controlling mood changes.

Chinese Teachers' Day is a festival celebrating the over 2,000-year tradition of respecting teachers and education in China.

The history of Teachers' Day dates back to the Han Dynasty. According to record, during the Han and Jin Dynasties, on August 27 of the lunar calendar each year, the birthday of Confucius(孔子), the emperor would go to the Confucius Temple and worship(敬拜) the great teacher, and would also invite royal teachers to dinner. And on that day, teachers enjoyed a day's vacation and were given dried meat as gifts. Besides, best teachers who were chosen from the whole country would be given 500 liang silver coins each as prizes. In the Qing Dynasty, well performing teachers would be given official titles or promoted to higher positions.

Normally, in ancient time, there was no fixed tuition fee(学费); the parents paid with money or food.

In private schools, teachers would receive money or gifts from the host family at certain festivals or at the beginning and end of each term. The festivals in which teachers received gifts were different in different areas, while the most valued ones were the Dragon Boat Festival, Mid-autumn Festival and Chinese New Year, as well as Confucius' birthday and the private teacher's birthday.

Among all the gift-giving festivals, the first meeting gift was a must. There was a tradition that when students met their teachers for the first time, they needed to kowtow(磕头) to Confucius' picture and then to their private teachers, before giving their teachers a "gift".

Many people think the two sports are the same, but a softball is bigger and softer than a baseball.

So far, China has successfully sent a large number of satellites(卫星)and spaceships into space. Space scientists have been greatly inspired by the old stories and ancient famous people when giving them names. 

Since thousands of years ago, Chinese people have dreamed of going to the moon. Chang'e Flies to the Moon is one of the most popular stories. As you can see, China's first man-made satellite to circle around the moon was named Chang'e I. More interestingly, the moon rover( 巡 视器)was named after the Jade Rabbit(玉兔), who is the partner of Chang'e in the story. These old stories carry people's best wishes and dreams. With the development of science and technology, our scientists have made them come true. 

Kua Fu Runs After the Sun is another story to show how much ancient Chinese people

wanted to know about the unknown world. Now, Kua Fu is going with the scientists to"visit"the sun, because we have a space project called KuaFu Mission. 

Besides the ancient stories, space scientists also get ideas from ancient famous people. For example, Mozi, an ancient scientist, discovered that light travels in a straight line over 2, 000 years ago. His discovery made space study take a big step at that time. So, China's first quantum(量子) science satellite was named Mozi, making China the first country in the world to achieve quantum communication between satellites and the ground. 

From such simple things as giving names to the satellites, we can see how great our traditional culture is and what influence it has on our modern science and technology. 

We all know this year is the Year of the Dragon! Among the 12 animals of the Chinese zodiac（生肖）, the dragon is the only unreal one. But Chinese people love it so much for thousands of years. And they always say they are "the descendants(传人)of the dragon". But how much do you know about the animal? Does it have the same meaning in different cultures?

People in both the East and the West think dragons are like snakes. Now in China, we can still find stories of dragons. For example, some old jade carvings(玉雕) look like snakes. In the West, people regard dragons as big snakes in the old book. 

However, stories about dragons are very different between the East and the West. Dragons in China have horse-like heads, long bodies but no wings. People think they are beautiful and smart. And they can also bring good luck. But dragons in the West have shorter bodies and big wings, they often mean bad luck. 

East or West, in the world of story, the dragon always plays an important role!
