When my daughter was in primary school, she brought home four small twigs(细枝) from school to plant. None of them looked very strong and lively. But with hope for the future, I planted them somewhere in our backyard which could give them enough sunlight. Over the years, because of the poor soil(土壤), three of them died. Only one lived at last.

It grew crooked(不直的) and very slowly. In fact, it looked more like a fat bush than a tree. Later, I noticed that it was starting to die. The branches(树枝) were becoming bare. Only the top third of the tree was still green. I did my best to save it by feeding it a lot of fertilizer, but it didn't work.

Later one morning, I went out and looked at it again. I was thinking if it would be better to just cut it down. It would make the yard look cleaner. As I walked over to take a closer look at it, however, I noticed something moving within the leaves. It was a bird patiently building a nest in the topmost branches. I smiled when I looked at it. I thought maybe this old tree was still useful. It might not be healthy or pretty, but it was still giving a bird a home.

This tree let me know that all of our lives have a purpose. It doesn't matter if we are young and strong or old and sickly. Until our last breath, we have things to do, love to give, and joy to share. We can help to make this world a better and more beautiful place.

Hello, I'm Bob. I'm 12 years old. I am at school now. I want to say something about myself. 

Playing volleyball is my hobby. I like it very much. I always play volleyball with my friends after school. It's relaxing for me. I have five volleyballs. They are under my desk. And I like to watch volleyball games on TV. 

I have eggs, milk and some fruit for breakfast. For lunch, I have noodles and some salad(沙拉). For dinner, I like chicken and some vegetables. I don't eat ice cream. It's not healthy. My favourite food is fruit and vegetables. I think they are good for our health.

"Spring" morning

The Qinghai-Xizang Plateau is very high. In the early morning, it's cool. After the sun comes out, it becomes warm, like spring. It's a good time to take a walk. 

 "Summer"noon

At noon, it's sunny and hot. You might feel like it's summer. The sunlight is so strong that you might want to wear a pair of sunglasses. Sometimes, it rains, but the rain doesn't last long. The sun comes along soon. If you are lucky enough, you might sec rainbows. 

"Autumn" afternoon

In the afternoon, the temperature goes down quickly, especially after the sun goes down. It's cool, just like in autumn. People have to put on warm clothes. 

 "Winter" night

Late in the night, it gets cold, like in winter. People have to wear thick clothes and sleep with thick quilts(被子)to keep warm. The rainy season is from June to September each year. It often rains at night. 

 Whether yellow, red or white, the onion is a vegetable that you may not know well. The list of its uses in cooking is endless. People have used onions to add flavor(味道) to their foods for thousands of years. Besides onions' great taste, they are very good for you. They have special chemicals that improve your ability to fight off illness and you have fewer chances of getting ill. 

 No matter how good onions are for you, it is difficult to cut an onion without your eyes filling with tears! When you cut an onion, irritating chemicals inside the onion will get into the air. They touch your whole eyes and cause pain. Your eyes make tears to wash away the chemicals and protect your eyes. 

 Luckily, cooks and scientists have discovered some ways to keep you from crying when you cut up onions. 

●Cut the onion under running water. The water will wash away the chemicals before they can reach your eyes. 

●Use a fan to blow air over the onion as you cut it. The air will blow the chemicals away from your eyes. 

●Put the onion in a fridge for an hour before cutting. This helps make the chemicals in the onion move slowly, so they may not ever reach your eyes. 

 If you try out these good ideas and still cry while cutting onions, don't worry. Scientists think if you cut more onions, your body will become more resilient to the onion's chemicals. So the tears will not last long. If you think about how healthy onions are, you might even call those tears" happy tears". 

One day, Jack's parents take Jack to watch a music show. Jack feels happy and sad with music, and he knows the power(力量) of music. Then he wants to play music. 

So they go to a store. His father likes the piano, but Jack thinks it is difficult. Mum likes the violin, but Jack doesn't like it. He wants to play the drums. So his dad buys a drum set for him and his mum helps him sign up(报名) for a drum set class. Then he starts learning to play the drums. 

At first, Jack has a lot of problems when he plays the drums. ____ His teacher teaches him patiently and his classmates often help him. He also spends a lot of time practicing it. He knows practice makes perfect. 

Now, Jack does well in class, and he is good at playing the drums. He knows more about the power of music. Jack thinks the drums open the door of exciting life.
