How to Invent a Product
Find a problem worth solving. It's unnecessary to think of something that no one has ever thought of before. Just ask yourself what exactly you are trying to improve or solve? If you want to build a better dust mop (拖把), how will it be better? What could you do differently?
Catch your brainstorm (头脑风暴). Try coming up with 15 solutions in a minute, no matter how crazy. Or choose one of the solutions and ask, "How is that like my idea?""How and why does it work?" "When, where and how is it used?""How is it described?" Let your questions and imagination come up with new ideas or find a different way of looking at a problem.
Visit stores that sell products similar to what yours will do and even go to ask store workers for products they might sell with a similar purpose. If you have a name for your product created, search this to find out whether it is already being used.
Build, test, rebuild and repeat. Thomas Edison's lab tested more than 6, 000 different materials for light bulbs before he came up with one that worked. Sometimes you might discover an entirely different idea.
When you think you've got everything ready, it's time to make a working model of your invention — a prototype(原型;样品). This is what you'll use to show people what it will look like and how it will work. You can use this prototype to show and introduce to the people who might have interest.
A. Research your invention. B. What interesting or important part does it have? C. Make your invention to a reality. D. This is often the longest part of inventing! |
What else can you do to invent a product?

Here's how to make beautiful patterns(图案) in a jar(广口瓶) of water.
You'll need | · a plastic bottle of honey(蜂蜜) · a microwave oven · a tall and clear jar of cold water with a lid(盖子) | ||
How to do | 1. Heat the honey bottle in microwave for 30 seconds. Honey will become almost as thin as water. | 2. Slowly squeeze a thin stream of honey into jar, gently( 轻轻地) move bottle as you squeeze it. | 3. After adding a bit of honey, put lid on jar and slowly turn it upside down. |
What happens? | For a few seconds, streams of honey fall through the water, making curves( 曲线) and even rings. You can sometimes see more beautiful shapes by gently turning the bottle over. The US International Space Station members did this experiment. Since there is almost no gravity(重力), their honey streams lasted much longer than yours. |

Dear Grandma and Grandpa, Our five-day holiday in Kyoto is almost over. Coming here for the cherry blossoms (樱花) is so worth it. Dad has taken a lot of pictures of the beautiful flowers. However, the best part of the trip is shopping in the city. Mom and I buy so many Japanese things that we can hardly carry them back! See you soon! Damien |
