The octopus (章鱼) is an amazing animal. Scientists have learnt that octopuses are clever. But until now, they haven't realized how smart octopuses really are.

Octopuses are very intelligent. They can learn new things just like humans. They've even learnt a few tricks to get themselves out of difficult situations. If an octopus is in danger because of an attacker, such as a shark or a whale, it can use some pretty wonderful skills to get away. Octopuses don't have teeth or sharp paws (爪) to protect themselves. Instead, they use more clever ways to fool their attackers. One way that can help an octopus hide is shooting ink. By the time the ink spreads out and the attacker can see again, the octopus has swum away or hidden. Octopuses also have the ability to change the color of their bodies to match the color of the things around, so predators (捕食者) may swim right by octopuses without noticing them.

While diving (潜水) into the ocean, scientists were surprised to see octopuses use another way to protect themselves. They saw some small octopuses moving coconut (椰子) halves across the ocean floor. The scientists followed the octopuses and discovered that the animals were putting the coconut shells together. When an octopus thought it was in danger, it swam back to the shells. Then it got two shell halves of the coconut and hid inside them by pulling one on top of the other. Because coconut shells are very hard on the outside, octopuses are able to create a safe ball to protect themselves from danger. Scientists believe that this action shows that octopuses are tool users.

Crabs (螃蟹) also use shells for protection. But scientists don't think that crabs are tool users. These animals can pick up shells and hide in them, but octopuses can carry shells to another place. Scientists say this shows that octopuses can think ahead about how they will use the shells later.

Besides humans, monkeys and some birds are the most common tool users. But now scientists have put octopuses with the animals that are intelligent enough to use tools.

China's Project Hope has s{#blank#}1{#/blank#} over 4 million poor students since it was set up years ago. Until today, the project has raised more than 10 billion yuan of d{#blank#}2{#/blank#} from many people. The money has b{#blank#}3{#/blank#} used in building more than eighteen t{#blank#}4{#/blank#} Project Hope primary schools. Over 4 million children can go to these schools. Project Hope knows that these children won't have a bright f{#blank#}5{#/blank#}if they get no education. Most of the primary schools and students helped by the project are in China's central and w{#blank#}6{#/blank#} areas which are less developed. Project Hope has helped build learning centres, libraries and training centres. It also helps t{#blank#}7{#/blank#} school teachers from rural(乡村的) areas. Project Hope has been the largest and most influential（有影响力的）welfare（福利）project of China. Though it has done a lot for them, there are still millions of students who are too p{#blank#}8{#/blank#} to receive education. More action should be taken to h{#blank#}9{#/blank#} them. Project Hope needs more people's help and we can support its work by s{#blank#}10{#/blank#} donations.

①On Sept 7, 2023. famous Chinese archaeologist (考古学家) Fan Jinshi, 85, was awarded by UNESCO(联合国教科文组织) for her protection of the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang.

②Called the "daughter of Dunhuang", her story with the caves started in 1963. At that time, Fan finished her studies in Peking University and had the chance to work at the Mogao Caves.

③"Seeing Dunhuang for the first time was very exciting. But only when truly staying here did I realize that inside the caves is a world of divine (神圣的) beauty while outside is a land of blowing sand and yellow earth," Fan told Gansu Daily.

④Back in those days, it wasn't easy to work in Dunhuang. Fan and her coworkers had to live in mud houses and drink salty water. They stayed inside the caves to do research, copy murals (壁画), and do whatever they could to protect them.

⑤As time passed, Fan found a serious problem. The increasing number of tourists visiting

Dunhuang might harm (伤害) the caves. A solution needed to be found.

⑥In the late 1980s, Fan discovered computer technology by chance. She realized that this might preserve the Mogao Caves forever. After over 30 years, the Dunhuang Academy built a digital database (电子数据库) to protect cultural relics there, allowing Dunhuang's art to live forever and people to visit the Mogao Caves online.

⑦"In my whole life, I've only done one thing: protect the world cultural treasure of the Mogao Caves,"she told People's Daily. "My heart belongs to Dunhuang."

A Bite of China is a documentary（记录片）that started on CCTV on May 14th, 2012. It tells the stories behind delicious food from different places in China and shows a lot about Chinese culture. Britain's Got Talent is a British television talent show and competition which began in June 2007. Anyone of any age with some kinds of talent can apply for（申请）a chance against each other to win a prize. The Voice of China is a television singing competition. It started on July 13th, 2012 on Zhejiang TV. It is like The Voice of Holland which started in Holland in 2010. Mythbusters is a science entertainment（科技型娱乐）TV program. It is one of the oldest and the most popular shows on Discovery Channel in America. On the show, the hosts（主持人）, Adam Savage and Jamie Hynema, take a scientific look at what people say or think to see if it is true.

 How do astronauts stop bone and muscle (肌肉) lose? Do water fly away when astronauts have a drink? On Dec 9, Chinese astronauts Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu gave a lesson on Tiangong Space Station. They did some science experiments (实验). Lots of students watched it and learned many amazing science facts. 

Use it or lose it

The human body grows with the pull of Earth's gravity (重力). But in space, our bones and muscles don't need to support our body's weight. This will make bone and muscle lose. It is dangerous for them. 

Astronauts have different ways to solve the problem. For example, Ye Guangfu was wearing a special uniform. There are many elastic bands (弹力带) inside it. Astronauts use their muscles to stretch (拉伸) the bands. This keeps their muscles strong. 

Wang Yaping also showed students how she walked on a treadmill (跑步机) and rode a bicycle. Astronauts exercise with these tools every day to stop muscle loss.

During another experiment, Wang made a water film (膜). Then she added more water drops onto the film to make it a water ball. This can never happen on the earth. Why?

We need to first understand the surface tension (表面张力) of water. Surface tension is like a"skin" （皮肤） of water. The "skin" is there because water molecules (分子) are drawn to each other. On the earth, gravity is too strong and it breaks the "skin". But with zero gravity in space, the "skin" stays strong and the water ball won't break. 

Space water is different in many other ways from that on the earth. For example, water won't fall down if you pour it into a cup. That's why astronauts usually drink water through straws (吸管). If astronauts cry, the tears won't fall down. They'll stay on their eyeballs.
