Things to Do in Star Town This Summer

This is a tale of two friends—one is blind, the other has no arms. On their own, the two are "disabled". But together, they are a powerful team that has changed part of their village in North China's Hebei Province into a rich, green forest. Meet 53-year-old Jia Haixia and Jia Wenqi! 

Their story began in 2000, when Haixia, who was already blind in his right eye, lost his left one after an illness. Wenqi lost his arms in an accident when he was just three. Neither could. find a job, so the two decided to team up. They rented some poor land and began to plant trees. In return, the local officials paid them a small fee. 

Haixia and Wenqi never imagined that they would end up creating an environmental paradise. Their forest now has over 10,000 trees, hundreds of birds and many other wild animals. In addition, it saves the village from river flooding during the rainy season. 

When the friends work together, they focus on their strengths not their disabilities. Their day begins at 7 a. m. when the sightless Haixia carries Wenqi across the river to get to their worksite. Since they cannot afford to buy young trees to plant, the two use branches from existing trees. Haixia climbs to the tree-top and with Wenqi's direction, selects the perfect branch. He then digs a hole and carefully plants it. Finally, Wenqi waters the area. 

Though hard-working, the men don't make much money. But as Wenqi puts it, "We stand on our own feet. so the fruits of our work taste sweeter. "

Neither Haixia nor Wenqi cares about money. Together, they already have everything they need—a perfect pair of eyes, two strong hands, and the best friendship in the world! 

The new school year is starting again. It's time to wear your school uniform and go back to class. In China, wearing a school uniform is a part of everyday life. But in France, people have different ideas on school uniforms.

A survey (调查) shows 66% of students don't like wearing school uniforms. Because they want to wear what they like to school. They think the school uniforms are not beautiful and they don't want to wear the same clothes as others.

But some schools in France ask their kids to wear uniforms. Why? Because as French students get older, some kids bully (霸凌) others. French schools think uniforms can help. If everyone wears the same clothes, they won't compare (比较) their clothes. Wearing uniforms can make kids feel like they're part of the school and get along better.

I think school uniforms help a lot. They can help students be nicer to each other and make school a better place to learn.

Benjamin West, the father of American painting, showed his talent for art when he was only six years of age. But he did not know about brushes before a visitor told him he needed one. In those days,a brush was made from camels'(骆驼) hair. There were no camels nearby. Benjamin decided that cat hair would work instead. He cut some hair from the family cat to make a brush.

The brush did not last long. Soon Benjamin needed more hair. Before long, the cat began to look ragged(蓬乱). His father said that the cat must be sick. Benjamin had to tell his father what he had been doing.

The cat's lot was about to improve. That year,one of Benjamin's cousins,Mr.Pennington, came to visit. He was impressed (印象深刻) with Benjamin's drawings. When he went home, he sent Benjamin a box of paint and some brushes as well as six paintings by an artist, which were the first pictures and first real paint and brushes that Benjamin had ever seen

In 1747, when Benjamin was nine years old, Mr. Pennington returned for another visit. He was amazed at what Benjamin had done with his talent. He asked Benjamin's parents if he might take the boy back to Philadelphia for a visit.

In the city, Mr. Pennington gave Benjamin materials for creating oil paintings. The boy began painting. William Williams, a well-known painter, came to see him work. Williams was impressed with Benjamin and gave him two books on painting to take home. The books were long and boring. Benjamin could read only a little, having been a poor student. But he later said that those two books stayed with him by day, and under his head at night. While it was likely that he understood very little of the books, they were his introduction to paintings. The nine-year-old boy decided then that he would be an artist.
