What was school like in ancient times? In Greece, 2,500 years ago, students used to get up at dawn to go to school. Classes began very early and ended when it was dark. Students didn't rest on weekends. They had classes seven days a week, so they didn't have much time for anything else. In Athens, only the sons of rich people went to school, and they started school around the age of seven. After they learned to read and write, they used to study Greek poems and historical works. Music was very important, and physical training was also important. Teachers used to hit students who didn't pay attention or were lazy. Girls stayed at home with their mothers and learned how to do housework.

In ancient Rome, boys and girls from wealthy families received a bilingual(双语) education. They had to study Greek and Latin. Students usually had classes outside, if the weather was good, or in the teacher's house. Young students sat on the floor. Older students used to sit on benches, higher up. That's how "high school"got its name.

Education was very important to the ancient Aztecs of Mexico. Boys and girls used to attend school, but they were kept in different classes. They learned Aztec history, myths, and rituals(宗教仪式), but they memorized(记住) everything because there weren't any textbooks. The boys received military training, and the girls learned how to manage the home and the family. There were two kinds of schools: one for children of rich families and another for children of ordinary families.

In the past,space tourism sounded like a dream,but now it is becoming a reality(现实).

But with the sky-high prices,is space travel just {#blank#}7{#/blank#}dream for common people?Maybe not.US flight engineer Ferdowsi believes that the price will come down,and common people can travel to space{#blank#}8{#/blank#}(free)."Maybe in ten{#blank#}9{#/blank#}fifteen years,it's a decision(决定) between 'do I buy a new car,'or 'do I go to space?"We should invest in a future.And that future allows us to live somewhere else if one day things like{#blank#}10{#/blank#}(pollute)or natural disasters (灾 难)destroy (摧毁)the Earth."

In most parts of the world, many students help their schools make less pollution(污染). They join "Environment Clubs(环境俱乐部)". In an Environment Club, people work together to make our environment clean. Here are some things students often do.

●No-garbage(垃圾)lunches. How much do you throw away after lunch? Environment Clubs ask students to bring their lunches in bags that can be used again. Every week they will find the classes that make the least garbage and report them to the whole school!

●No-car day. On a no car day, nobody comes to school in a car, not the students and not the teachers! Cars give pollution to our air, so remember: walk, jump, bike or run. Use your legs! It's lots of fun !

●Turn off the water! Did you know that some toilets can waste 20~40 m³ of water an hour? In a year, that would fill a small river! In Environment Clubs, students mend(修理) some toilets.
       We love our environment. Let's work together to make it clean。

"I don't like my school, and I want to go home!" Do you have that idea that? A lot of children do. Now let's talk about it.

If you don't like your school, the first thing is to know why. You may not like your teachers. You may not have many friends at school. You may have problems with your subject s or homework

But what can you do with it? You can make some new friends. Going to school can be very interesting if you have many friends at school. You can make friends after school or when doing sports, then you can talk with them and do the same thing with them. You can also make school easy. If you don't like your teachers, you can talk with them. If you think your subjects are boring and difficult, you can ask others for help.

School is not a prison (监狱). You can learn to make your school life easy and interesting.

You may see some herons（鹭） in the park using bread or insects as a tool to catch fish. This is just one of the ways in which birds have changed their living habits because of humans' activities. Now, a new study has found that birds that are able to change their behaviors（行为） in this way are less likely to die out. These changes may include adding new food to their diet, developing new hunting skills, or living in a new environment.

Scientists studied reports of new behaviors among different kinds of birds around the world. The study includes more than 3,800 new behaviors among 8,600 kinds of birds. They discovered that the more new hunting skills the birds learn, the larger population they will have.

However, scientists also found that innovation（革新） can only protect birds from changes in their living place, but not from over-hunting or the danger from other animals. For example, some animals are very dangerous to some birds: snakes can eat little birds; some hungry mice steal birds' eggs. Above all, humans often mean the greatest danger to birds. They always take up too much space, cut down trees and even cause various kinds of pollution.

This shows that, unlike what is usually believed, the ability of innovation protects animals from some but not all of the rapid changes in the environment.
