Half a century ago, a boy in Britain had never thought that a dream would drive him to spend decades in a {#blank#}1{#/blank#}(外国的) country.

That boy was William Lindsay. When in primary school, he loved studying maps. The saw-tooth(锯齿般的) line in China {#blank#}2{#/blank#}(抓住) his eyes, that is, the Great Wall.

Driven by his dream, Lindsay set off on his Great Wall journey in 1984. However, a few days later, he had to give up because of the difficulties. After returning back, he began to exercise more often, and even learned some {#blank#}3{#/blank#}(基础的) Chinese.

With full preparation, Lindsay set off again in 1987. Altogether, the hike took him about 160 days. When he was found to be walking alone along the Yulin Great Wall in Shaanxi, all the local villagers {#blank#}4{#/blank#}(想知道) where he is from and what he is doing here. Finally, the police came, he had to leave.

Nothing could stop his willful heart. A few days later, Lindsay began to continue his{#blank#}5{#/blank#}(旅行) from Inner Mongolia, He was finally able to arrive at Shanhaiguan, a major pass at the {#blank#}6{#/blank#}(东部的) end of the Wall.

Through this trip, he developed a deep understanding of the Great Wall. Since then, he has made great efforts to protect it. In 1988, he organized more than 120 volunteers to pick up{#blank#}7{#/blank#}(垃圾) on the Great Wall. He started to give lectures in {#blank#}8{#/blank#}(公共的) places and began looking for more volunteers.

During Lindsay's Great Wall hike, he met his Miss Right, a Chinese girl from Xi'an. They got married. His wife and two {#blank#}9{#/blank#}(儿子) have now also joined him in protecting the Great Wall. This British boy said he was {#blank#}10{#/blank#}(自豪) of what he had done and he would spend his remaining years in China—for his family and for the Wall.

In the picture, a girl is standing on a bamboo pole (竹竿) on the river and dancing beautifully. It's not a scene from a movie, but a form of intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产)—bamboo drifting (独竹漂).

Yang Liu, 24, is an inheritor (传承人) of bamboo drifting. She started to lean it from her grandmother when she was 7. As she was weak in health as a child, her grandmother wanted her to become stronger through this sport. Yang threw herself into practicing bamboo drifting all year round, even in the winter cold and the summer heat. "It was common for me to fall into the water when I started practicing," recalled Yang. It took her three years to learn the basic skills of bamboo drifting. In order to learn more bamboo drifting skills,Yang had to practise so many difficult movements on a bamboo pole that was 9 m in length and 15 cm in diameter (直径). Through years of hard training,Yang now considers the bamboo pole as her "best friend".

At one point, encouraged by her grandmother,Yang began to combine (结合) dance with bamboo drifting. "My grandmother came up with an idea. She said that I had been practicing bamboo drifting since I was a child, so why not try to combine dance with the skill? It might be something different." the young woman said. Yang's hard work gradually paid off when she was able to perfectly perform dancing with the traditional bamboo drifting skills. "I hope that more people can know about bamboo drifting and enjoy this form of art," said Yang.

Genevieve Moss has serious hearing loss. Her world has always been silent. Alone in a town in England, she often felt lonely.

Then one day in April in 2021, something stopped Moss as she read the local newspaper. It was a photo of a tiny black-and-white cat. A family was looking for a home for their last newborn cat. Moss fell in love with it at first sight and contacted the family. Soon, the cat came to Moss's house. Moss called the cat Zebby because his colors looked like those of a zebra.

Moss once heard of studies showing that pets can help people deal with loneliness. However, she had no idea that Zebby would become her helper and her ears. From their first night together, Zebby has slept next to her. When he hears noises in the dark, he jumps up. "He became my night watch cat," Moss said. "Sometimes he would run around the room until I woke up."

After several weeks, Moss noticed that whenever her phone rang or someone knocked at the door, Zebby would touch her lightly. It wasn't long before the cat took on another task: collecting Moss's mail. Now whenever he hears the mailbox being opened, he runs towards it, carries the mail in his mouth and drops it at Moss's feet.

This past May Zebby was named Britain's National Cat of the Year by Cats Protection. According to the largest cat charity, Zebby beat out about 3,000 other cats because of the many ways he makes Moss's life easier. He has had no training at all, but his natural abilities seem to have told him that his owner needs his help.

"Zebby has made my house a home," Moss said. "I can hardly imagine not having Zebby in my life now."

A novel is a long story, usually a fictional book, which describes human experiences and interactions. It is in the form of prose(written or spoken language in its ordinary form), rather than poetry. The English-language novel, as we know it today, mainly began its development in the 1700s. Realism became important in literature at this point. {#blank#}1{#/blank#} It was in this time period and mode of literature that women writers truly came into their own. Two famous women authors who influenced the history of literature were Jane Austen and Virginia Woolf.

Jane Austen(1775-1817) was an English author. {#blank#}2{#/blank#}

Jane's father was a priest. They were middle class, thought not rich. In the polite society of that time, which they were part of, the lives of girls and women were very much ruled by the social rules and morals of the day. {#blank#}3{#/blank#} The writer Walter Scott said of her novels, "That young lady has a talent for describing the involvements of feelings and characters of ordinary life which is to me the most wonderful I have ever met with."

She was concerned with how women came to marry as it was not a simple matter of falling in love with someone in those days. {#blank#}4{#/blank#}The other problem was money; parents needed to provide women with some money to take into a marriage. Parents often tried to find their daughters the right partners. That's why Jane herself never married and died aged only{#blank#}5{#/blank#}.
