Half a century ago, a boy in Britain had never thought that a dream would drive him to spend decades in a (外国的) country.
That boy was William Lindsay. When in primary school, he loved studying maps. The saw-tooth(锯齿般的) line in China (抓住) his eyes, that is, the Great Wall.
Driven by his dream, Lindsay set off on his Great Wall journey in 1984. However, a few days later, he had to give up because of the difficulties. After returning back, he began to exercise more often, and even learned some (基础的) Chinese.
With full preparation, Lindsay set off again in 1987. Altogether, the hike took him about 160 days. When he was found to be walking alone along the Yulin Great Wall in Shaanxi, all the local villagers (想知道) where he is from and what he is doing here. Finally, the police came, he had to leave.
Nothing could stop his willful heart. A few days later, Lindsay began to continue his(旅行) from Inner Mongolia, He was finally able to arrive at Shanhaiguan, a major pass at the (东部的) end of the Wall.
Through this trip, he developed a deep understanding of the Great Wall. Since then, he has made great efforts to protect it. In 1988, he organized more than 120 volunteers to pick up(垃圾) on the Great Wall. He started to give lectures in (公共的) places and began looking for more volunteers.
During Lindsay's Great Wall hike, he met his Miss Right, a Chinese girl from Xi'an. They got married. His wife and two (儿子) have now also joined him in protecting the Great Wall. This British boy said he was (自豪) of what he had done and he would spend his remaining years in China—for his family and for the Wall.
